Trade Deadline candidates on the rise

Nelson Cruz, DH, Twins
The ageless wonder continues to rake, hitting 17 home runs with 42 RBIs and a .935 OPS in 67 games this season. Cruz is slashing .349/.404/.651 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 11 games during the past two weeks, showing no sign of a summer slowdown. Cruz, who turns 41 on Thursday, is on a one-year, $13 million contract, making him a prime rental candidate for an American League contender.

Potential fits: Athletics, Rays, White Sox

I continue to be amazed that in a sport where you peak at age 27, this player is able to provide this level of performance, at age 41.

He really is amazing. I remember sentiment that the Mariners made a big mistake, signing Cruz to a 4 year deal when he was coming off a career year at age 33. With no defensive value, he had to hit, any decline in the bat makes it an Albertross contract.

Turns out the Mariners would have gotten good value if they had offered a 7 year deal. This is a sport where it seems to be getting harder and harder to age well. Cruz makes it look easy. He's 3 years older than Miguel Cabera, whose last good season was in 2016.

434 homers right now, probably can finish the season around 450. Does he have a shot at 500?

Born the same year as Albert.

20s:

Albert 334/427/628 172 OPS+
Nelson 273/336/502 116 OPS+

30s+

Albert 266/328/472 119 OPS+
Nelson 280/351/538 140 OPS+

Obviously, they switched identities somewhere around 2012. Arte Moreno should sue for fraud.

Terms of the deal with the devil made the night of Game 6 in 2011?

I remember when the M's signed Cruz six years ago now, ######## about how they were signing another aging slugger who was just going to collapse like a dying star. Shows what I know.

#3 was fun. If you combined Albert's 20s with Nelson's 30s and 40s, you get this career line:

723 HRs, 2070 RBIs, .308/.387/.580 slash line, 3,187 hits

#4, I didn’t think of that. But now it all makes perfect sense.

Nelson Cruz was once traded for Jorge Velandia. Straight up! Bill Clinton was still president!

You will win this world series and then soon after become insanely wealthy, but you will body-swap your baseball skills with that RF out there!

The spell was cast right when that ball floated over Cruz' head.

You know you're in trouble when guys you saw in the minors (I watched Cruz play for the Midwest League's Kane County Cougars in Lansing, Michigan in 2003) are now called "ageless wonders". (What does that make me? An even more-aged non-wonder...?)

Well, I saw John Kruk and Ozzie Guillen play for the Texas League Beaumont Gators in AA, so let's not go there.

Even money that Cabrera is older than Cruz. Same for Pujols. Maybe a lot older.
