1. The Duke Posted: June 24, 2021 at 12:19 AM (#6026063)1. Carlos Martinez (two expensive club options )
2. Andrew Miller (rental)
3. Paul Dejong (locked in contract but declining value)
4. Kwang Kim (rental )
5. Andrew Knizner (another potential Carson Kelly)
6. Matt Carpenter (ntc, rental)
There’s some nice pieces to fill gaps and none of them are key pieces for 2022 cardinals except Dejong
1) I thought the Red Sox were designed to be sellers again this summer, but they are now too deep into the season, and way too competitive, not to at least try to pick up a few small pieces to help (Maybe an outfield bat, maybe relief help). But Chaim Bloom signed a bunch of short-term contracts with veterans who had nothing to do with long-term building (Martin Perez, Garrett Richards, Marwin Gonzalez, Kike Hernandez, Hunter Renfroe, Adam Ottavino, etc), but clearly Bloom is not going to trade pieces.
2) Being a buyer vs seller probably depends a lot, for many teams on how much you value being a wild card team. Before the WC era, winning the division meant two rounds and you were the champion. Now, you have to win a play-in game just to get to the playoffs, and it seems like luck would play a bigger role than it used to in who wins the whole thing. So does that reduce the value of making a playoff push ("Hey, the chances we'll win the whole thing are pretty low") or increase the value ("If you can make the playoffs, it doesn't matter so much if you're the #1 seed or the worst wild card - it's a crapshoot!")
2. Andrew Miller -- 78 ERA+
3. Paul Dejong -- 66 OPS+
4. Kwang Kim -- hey, he's having a pretty good season
5. Andrew Knizner -- career 61 OPS+ in 168 PA
6. Matt Carpenter -- 82 OPS+
:-)
The D-backs are coming to St. Louis in a few days, and may be on a 26 game road losing streak. When they then sweep the Cards, everyone will know it is time for the Cards to sell. ;-)
