Transcript of Jeff Conine’s comments about Florida Marlins SS Hanley Ramirez

From comments…“Conine is simply pissed off that he is no longer the greatest Marlins player ever.”

Does Jeff Conine get frustrated by Hanley Ramirez?

“On a nightly basis.’’

Because?

“I just, I don’t know, I think that obviously Hanley is a phenomenal talent. But as a guy that… I’m probably jealous too because I didn’t have that kind of talent but I had to work extremely hard on a nightly basis to put my talent on the field . I think that there are some nights when he doesn’t work as hard as he should.’’

...I don’t want to put words in your mouth but it sounds like you find, given how hard you hard to work and given that you don’t think he works to maximum capacity all the time, yes or no, you don’t think he respects the game?

“I would say if you define that as not going out there and putting 100 percent on the field every day, yeah, I would say no he doesn’t.”

Would you trade him if it were up to you?

“If it were up to me, probably.’’

well, SS isn't gonna be available after we sign jose reyes this offseason, but ramirez can probably slot in perfectly in LF.

Then there was this little shot at Ramirez in a column by Israel Gutierrez extolling the virtues of Mike Stanton:

On a team with Hanley Ramirez, a superstar who’s anything but the ideal teammate or tireless worker, Stanton stands out as a talent who’s unwilling to settle for just being gifted.

I wonder what's next -- a proclamation by the Miami-Dade Metro Commission declaring a "Hanley's a Punk Day"?

Not that you'd care, but I'm trying to imagine circumstances that could get me to eventually hate a team more than I do the Yankees, and they certainly start with the Phillies signing Jose Reyes.

Hanley over the last 28 days: 321/406/595. He's got his OPS+ up to 100 for the season. Just sayin'.

Cubs should get him and push castro to second

This did not work well for Jose Reyes.

There are worse things in the world than watching Hanley Ramirez loafing out groundballs. Like watching Alex Gonzalez swinging at sliders in the dirt.

Can we talk about how good Mike Stanton is , instead?

It's the curse of the overly gifted. The talent allows a player to make everything look easy, which allows those jealous of that talent to think they don't work very hard. The Braves solution to this "problem" was to trade for a shortstop with no talent. Now folks are frustrated for a different reason.

I think the Marlins should package Stanton and Ramirez for some veteran grit.

Conine is an ass.

"Ponson, along with Erickson and Jeff Conine, took a limo from New York to Baltimore, in the middle of a series, to see a Metallica concert on July 4"

I don't doubt he's an ass, but how is this evidence of his assery? In fact that adds to his coolness.

Taking a limo with Sidney Ponson to a Metallica concert has to be one of the least cool things I can come up with. Maybe playing Frog Bog with Zach Braff or going to Charlie Sheen's live thingy is worse.

He wasn't making it look too easy from April-June.

I think the evidence on balance shows that Hanley's a bit of a loafer at times. Doesn't mean you don't want him on your team, but let's not sugar coat the obvious.

Part of the point of making a lot of money, one should think, would be to do awesome stuff like taking a limo to a Metallica concert two states away.
   16. Something Other Posted: July 25, 2011 at 07:24 AM (#3884588)
Or at least to send Sid Ponson to a Metallica concert two states away while you do something actually interesting.

A roundtrip car ride from NY to Balt for a concert in the middle of series sure doesn't sound like the best way to put 100% on the field for the next days game. Hypocrite? At least Conine is self aware enough to admit that he is "probably jealous."
