Trea Turner, new Dodgers second baseman, says he ‘would have loved to stay’ with the Nationals

Then came Saturday and his first news conference as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The lines came with a twist of frustration. Naturally, Turner, 28, was asked about being traded by the Nationals instead of agreeing to a contract extension before reaching free agency. Specifically, he was pressed on General Manager Mike Rizzo’s comments that Turner and his agents wanted to table discussions until the shortstop market shook out.

“I’ve been pretty honest,” Turner said from Dodger Stadium, where he was set to bat leadoff and play second base against the Los Angeles Angels. “I said I would talk about an extension whenever and waited for that to happen, and it didn’t happen. So I’ve been told a lot of things over the last two years and, for me, actions speak louder than words. That’s kind of in the past now, it’s over with, and excited to start a new chapter….

“When I was with the Nationals, I thought I’d play there 20 years,” Turner said, speaking in the past tense about a team he helped win the World Series in 2019. “The organizations I’ve been a part of, I’ve liked. I liked the people there. I would have loved to stay there. These last two weeks have been weird because I go back and forth like, ‘Oh, they’re not going to trade me’ ... and, ‘Oh, yep, they are.’ ”

This is a good trade for Dodgers. I doubt they will re-sign scherzer but I could see them re-upping Turner. I think the Cardinals will try to bring scherzer back to his hometown. They need another quality pitcher and he probably can’t get more than three years which is what they would like. They could re-sign Lester too and have 600 wins in their starting rotation next year !

I see Seager is healthy again and got the start at SS which is interesting. Rfield rates Turner that slightly better fielder. Seager is a year younger but FA at the end of the year, Turner's been more durable (a full season's worth more PAs over the last 5 years). They're the Dodgers, they could obviously keep both but given he hasn't been extended yet, I've got to think Seager's on his way out.

Whoa, what the heck is going on with Cody Bellinger? I knew he wasn't doing well this season, but those are some staggeringly bad numbers.

Yes, he's been on quite the hot streak the past week.

I think it is more likely the Dodgers re-sign Chris Taylor than Seager.

IMO, whoever ends up with Turner, is the winner of the 2021/2022 shortstop sweepstakes......including Lindor. I think it comes down to Correa and Turner.

If the choice is Correa or Turner please put me down for all the Turners you've got. No contest.

Turner's not FA until after 2022 ... that's the bit the Nats are spreading about him saying he wanted to wait to see how the SS market shakes out before signing an extension.

Turner vs Correa is also mainly a question of durability. Turner has about 500 more PA over the last 5 years but Correa has still produced 1 more WAR (not a big deal) and is clearly higher quality (1.7 more WAR per 650). FWIW, Rfield considers Correa the better fielder by a good margin, Turner the superior baserunner. Correa is 2 years younger. Correa has been healthy all of 2020-21 so it's possible his durability issues are behind him. Turner has also been healthy the last two years, both missed time in 2019 (Correa half, Turner 1/4).

Correa when healthy has a case for being the 4th best position player in the game (Trout, Betts, Tatis) and two of those guys have also missed a good bit of time recently. He's been healthy the last two years, he's only turning 27.
