Trevor Bauer wants to start every fourth day in 60-game season, and the Reds might let him

Reds right-hander Trevor Bauer has in the past stumped to be part of a four-man rotation, or least start every fourth day himself. That wish is unlikely to be granted during a normal 162-game season, but the 2020 regular season will span just 60 games because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That means the time may be nigh for Bauer to take the bump every fourth day.

As Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports, that might be just what happens. Via Nightengale:

The question looming throughout preseason camp is how much is enough for Bauer in the starting rotation. Pitching coach Derek Johnson said he was considering using Bauer as a starter every fourth day, something Bauer has advocated for, instead of the typical five days.

“I’ve applied some friendly pressure to him, I guess is how you’d say it,” Bauer said. “But basically letting him know that I want to pitch as much as possible as often as possible. You don’t have to worry about wearing down over the course of a long season. We’ve got a two-month sprint and a month of playoffs.”

Kind of a cool idea.

I expect teams to be somewhat cautious at the start of the season, due to the unusual 2nd spring training summer camp. A “minor” injury could cost a pitcher half the season, and the expanded early-season rosters give teams more pitching resources. It might be different after the first month when rosters are more normal size, pitchers should be in some sort of mid-season shape, and teams that need to will be tempted to ride their best pitchers longer since they’d only need to do so for another month.

I noticed a lot of schedules go 2-3 weeks before the first off day, not like the usual schedule which typically has a lot of off days early in the year for bad weather.

I wonder how the three starters in the Reds rotation who were better than him in 2019 feel about this.

the typical five days

Games not days. And I suspect there's no way the Reds will do this on days. But he is FA at the end of the season so if he wants to risk his arm in this way, the Reds might let him do it.

You can never accuse Bauer of being tedious, the guy is always interesting, that's for sure. Heck, if he wants the ball every 4 days, might as well give it a go.

Huh?

If Bauer is on a 4-day rotation, either the other guys are going to need to be on one too, or they won't be on a regular rotation to accommodate Bauer's wishes. And it's one thing if that's Aaron Nola asking the Phils, but not so much Bauer asking a team with at least one starter who is more accomplished than he is, and was better for Cincy last year.

Hugh - I actually find Bauer pretty tedious. He’s like a “shock jock” DJ “you won’t believe what he’s going to say next!” He doesn’t feel genuine to me. There’s more than a little Schilling in him, he knows how his act is going to play before he does it.

Given he will be a free agent (and probably gone) after the season, if I was the Reds I'd say 'sure, why not'. They were in 4th last year so might as well roll the dice and see what happens.

So that would mean the rotation would go...

Bauer, 2, 3, 4
Bauer, 5, 2, 3
Bauer, 4, 5, 2
Bauer, 3, 4, 5
Bauer, 2, 3, 4
...
and so on. If someone is sucking you can pull them easily (outside of Bauer). Extra rest for all the others which might help if they aren't at full speed right away. Easy enough to shift back to a 5 day from this if needed. 60 / 4 = 15 starts for Bauer, For every 4 starts Bauer gets the others get 3. So 9 starts each for the rest of the starters. I hope they do it as I love experiments and 2020 is nothing but a massive one.

Bauer, 2, 3, 4
But Bauer's their #3 starter.

SOSH U, it was a quote of a response Esoteric made in another thread. My bet is that the other Red players find Bauer pretty goddam annoying.

Oh, missed that. And yes, I'm sure they do.

They might let him start every third day just to get him out of the dugout.
