Trout, Verlander, Yates win Baseball Digest awards

NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Trout has been chosen major league player of the year by Baseball Digest and eBay.

The star outfielder from the Los Angeles Angels edged Dodgers slugger Cody Bellinger by two points in voting by a 17-member panel of baseball writers, broadcasters, former players and executives.

Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander was selected pitcher of the year and San Diego Padres closer Kirby Yates got picked as the top reliever.

The awards were announced Thursday. Trout also won in 2014.

And now, awards seasons has officially begun….

I mean if it's the Baseball Digest awards sponsored by ebay then good for them but I wouldn't phrase that as "selected by ... ebay."

The biggest news in this story is that Baseball Digest is still a thing. I am having difficulty fathoming this.

Of course it was notable that Verlander and Cole won 20 and struck out 300, the only ones to do either. Didn't notice until now that Eugenio Suarez led MLB with 189 strikouts, the lowest MLB batting whiff leader since 2005.
so were strikout totals down while HR was up? No, MLB set another record with 42823, perhaps the TTO players are adjusting a bit or getting less playing time.

A lot of the guys who have K'd 190+ times in recent years were either hurt or were so bad they no longer played every day -- Judge, Stanton, Mark Reynolds, Chris Carter, Chris Davis, Joey Gallo. And a few guys like Mike Napoli have retired.

There are a few who have slightly improved their K rate -- Yoan Moncada who led the majors last year with 217, for example. He missed a few weeks, but he also reduced his K rate noticeably. Not that surprising for a 24-year-old.

I expect that if guys like Judge/Stanton/Gallo are healthy next year, we'll see the leader back up in the 200s.
