Troy Percival wants pitchers to care more about eyes than iPads. The Angels might agree

Sub required

Early this fall, during minor league instructional camp, the Angels invited one of the most decorated pitchers in franchise history to help work with their up-and-coming prospects.

Troy Percival wasn’t a fan of what he saw.

He wasn’t frustrated with the pitchers or how they were throwing. Rather, Percival told The Athletic, his reaction stemmed from how technology was being used by people in player development.

“I’m not one that’s big on using the iPads,” said Percival, who spent six seasons as the head coach at UC Riverside. “I understand it. I had to understand it through college coaching. I just feel like we need to have coaches with eyes that can see things and put their hands on people and fix them. It’s really difficult to look at an iPad and think that it can make the adjustments that it needs to make.”

Percival said he did not call on anyone to be fired, and merely shared his observations and opinions with Angels farm director Joey Prebynski. But those words seemed to carry weight with the team’s decision-makers. Shortly thereafter, the Angels let go of the two highest-ranking pitching instructors in their farm system: pitching coordinator Buddy Carlyle and pitching performance coordinator Dylan Alexrod. People briefed on the changes said Percival’s frustration with his visit played at least a factor in the Angels’ decision to oust them.

What does he think they are looking at their iPads with?

I'd be a little concerned about coaches who are that insistent on putting their hands on people.

Sounds like Percival : Angels :: Bagwell : Astros.

I'm kinda surprised no former Yankees player has stepped up (someone with more cred than David Wells) and said "no more analytics, let's win with mystique and aura and the Yankee way"

I do sometimes get the impression that some organizations are more impressed with pitching lab results than what guys can do on a mound under game conditions. Are today’s Mike Mussina/Whitey Ford type prospects appreciated even if they never top 95 MPH with their heater?

Mike "The claw" Maddux just won a World Series by being handsy

Not for nothing but - both Carlyle and Axelrod (particularly the latter) managed journeyman careers because of their guile and craft, not pure stuff.

Jordan Montgomery has never gotten much respect, probably because he tops out at 93 MPH, but he's got a 116 career ERA+ and won a few postseason games this year.

Also, I love me some Kliph Nesteroff.

I've got more patience for crotchetiness than most, but I think career relief pitchers have to understand that in any truly crotchety dream world they would not exist. It's like being a career designated hitter and talking about how guys don't know how to do the little things. Know your place and let the starters act this way, Troy.

One assumes that the opinions of Troy Percival, tiresome old rich guy who has never had a coaching job that wasn't some kind of fundraising-related sinecure, actually had nothing to do with these firings. Because if they did, the Angels might as well just set fire to their stadium and apologize to the world for ever having employed Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Albert Pujols, Tim Salmon, Bobby Grich, Reggie Jackson, Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, and every other worthwhile major leaguer who has ever been on their roster.

HoFer and MVP Vlad Guerrero is a bit saddened to find he's not being name-checcked.

The real irony here is that Percival pitched with astigmatism his whole career and never wore contacts or glasses on the mound. He had to squint to pick up the signals, then just threw a fastball towards the general area of the catcher's mitt. I loved the guy, but he doesn't strike me as a pitching genius.

The key question is whether Percival came up with the "eyes" vs "ipad" thing or did he just say it not realizing the pun and the writer/headline writer picked it up.

per eno sarris, carlyle has already been hired by the rays as a pitching coordinator. there are dangers to this kind of thinking but -- the rays have a much better hiring track record than have the angels.

oh yeah, tom, he's great.

"Troy Percival must hate the pitching labs churning out hard-throwing 1-inning mules, particularly if they have an atypical arm actions that produce spin," said Irony.
