Trump wants tax breaks to lure baseball fans back, but the incentive could misfire with attendance still barred

Senior White House economic official Larry Kudlow told reporters last week that the administration wants to approve new tax breaks for baseball games to encourage Americans to return to the ballpark.

The next day, Minor League Baseball announced it would play no additional games this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The future of Major League Baseball looks up in the air, too, with several league stars opting out of the season recently over fears of spreading the virus and the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros canceling workouts on Monday due to problems with testing. Fans won’t even be allowed to attend the truncated baseball season when it starts later this month, at least initially.

“It’s a little weird to see the administration discuss something like a tax credit, when essentially no team has announced a policy on even bringing fans back to the ballpark this year,” said one official involved in baseball operations at a Major League Baseball franchise, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss industry reaction.

Is this article from the future?

Or a loose definition of league stars and the minimum definition of several. David Price, Ryan Zimmerman, Nick Markakis.

A really dumb and bad idea that won’t work anyway, but even if it did would have severely negative repercussions for society.

This is what leads the country.

This.

The stupid, it burns. Next we'll see proposals for statues of Confederate scum in monument park at Yankee Stadium.

How about a statue of Reggie Jefferson and Storm Davis?

Easier just to rename it Dixie Park.

I wonder if this means season tickets are now tax write-offs.

I am very unclear on what this idea even is. I get a break on my taxes for going to baseball games?

More likely, baseball teams get a tax break and OF COURSE they will pass those savings onto fans.

Here in Oz, our PM's first brilliant recovery idea was --- if you happen to have a $150,000+ home renovation ready to go, the government will give you $25,000.

It may shock you to know that the *latest* dumb idea that won't work and would make matters worse if it did isn't well-thought out; just another spitball by super genius Larry Kudlow and his even geniuser boss...

But -

Probably fair to assume it would be similar to the laughable TRIPS act Martha McSally introduced (4k/8K nonrefundable vacation tax credit; meaning- only about half the country would qualify for it).

Prior to this, they were also urging a 'dining and entertainment' tax credit -- basically, reversing their own 2017 tax bill on business dining & entertainment deductions...

In effect, flailing, unworkable ideas to avoid dealing with what they should be dealing with but have grown bored of caring about...

My taxes become a lot simpler after the 2017 bill, the increase of the standard deduction meant there was no reason to itemize. So you could tell me that a 75 dollar baseball ticket is deductible, but would not make the slightest difference to me, even if I had the option of purchasing such a ticket.

I was happy to see MLB.com finally sent me an email about the subscription, with fewer games it's down to $45 dollars for the year, with the balance of what I paid in March going as a credit to the 2021 season. Or I could request a refund for that, but I'm not going to bother.

Larry Kudlow is well known for being wrong about....everything, all the time.

While he's also known for being wrong about everything, that's Jim Cramer.

Felix Hernandez as well. I think a definition of "star" that encompasses career value and name recognition is fair.

Good call. Even now, he's definitely more starry than Zimmerman and Markakis.
