Twins sign Homer Bailey and Rich Hill

The Minnesota Twins signed two free agent pitchers just before the end of 2019, inking Rich Hill and Homer Bailey to one-year deals.

Hill, who will turn 40 during spring training, is still recovering from “primary and revision surgery” on his left elbow he underwent back in October and won’t be ready for the start of the 2020 season. It’s most likely that, barring setbacks, he’ll be ready to go at or maybe just before the All-Star break.

Despite that, Hill should be able to help the Twins. He dealt with a flexor strain during the 2019 campaign but still posted a 2.45 ERA with excellent peripherals over 13 starts with the Dodgers. Basically, when he felt good he was still effective, when he didn’t, he couldn’t go. Given that he wasn’t losing it when he could pitch, there is reason to believe that he will be an asset for Rocco Baldelli in the second half of the season.

Color me misguided. I coulda sworn I saw a story very early in the offseason that Hill and the Dodgers had agreed on a small 1-year deal.

No mention of money in TFA? Makes it rather difficult to evaluate the signings, and seems like less than stellar reporting. MLB Trade rumors, which has a time stamp before TFA, has the details:
Hill is guaranteed $3MM, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com tweets. His contract includes a hefty $9.5MM in total available incentives which can be met by recording only 15 starts and/or 75 innings thrown. Bailey’s contract comes with a $7MM guarantee, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). He also has some incentive pay available, but only if he gets up to 180 innings, Hayes tweets.
$7M seems like a lot for Bailey, at least based on what’s said about him at BBTF.

Bailey was actually good last year. Wouldn’t want to rely on him but this is a good deal if he can replicate that. Much rather have Gio Gonzalez on the deal he signed, of course.
