Twins win AL Central crown for first time since 2010

The Twins went into Wednesday night with a magic number of two and a four-game lead over the Indians in the AL Central. They weren’t in real danger of losing the thing, but it’s always better to clinch early and get a few days of rest for the regulars while being able to set the rotation for the divisional round.

Thanks to a Twins 5-1 (box score) win in Detroit and Indians 8-3 (box score) loss to the White Sox, the clinch has happened. The Twins are the American League Central champions for the first time since 2010. The Indians were heavy favorites to win the division when the season started, but the Twins nearly went wire to wire in the lead here. Starting April 20, the Twins were either tied or in first place the rest of the way, building a lead as big as 11 1/2 games.

It was certainly worrisome when the Indians erased said 11 1/2 game deficit by tying things up both on Aug. 9 and Aug. 11, but the Twins steadied and stayed mentally tough, going 27-13 down the stretch since then.

The win Wednesday was the Twins’ 98th of the season. They were 78-84 last season, so it’s been quite the turnaround here under the watch of first-year manager Rocco Baldelli.

Congratulations, and best wishes against the Yankees.

Twins have a chance to win 100 for only the second time in their history (1965). The part of Zoilo Versailles is being played by Jorge Polanco.

As I've noted a couple of times before, it's not just the weak teams in their division. They are 43-23 against the ALE/ALW which is basically the same as 47-25 in the division. They are just 8-12 against the NL. 4-3 vs Astros; just 2-4 vs Yanks; 3-4 vs As; 5-2 vs Rays; 9-10 vs CLE.

The real question is: is Rocco Baldelli playing the part of Alex Cora? It'd be fun if we had two consecutive World Series won by team under rookie managers who were players in the aughts.

The Twins picked up C.J Cron, Nelson Cruz, and Jonathan Schoop this off-season, while the Indians picked up Tyler Clippard and Jordan Luplow.

Managers Cora, Baldelli, Cash, and Woodward were each on either the '08 or '09 Red Sox.

The past series have no impact on this year, but the Twins this millennium are 2-13 in postseason games against the Yankees. I really hope they break the pattern this year.

I expect to see the Yankees and Twins series turn into a slugfest with lots of souvenirs for fans in the cheap seats.

Tell me more about these "cheap seats" in October...

Not quite set yet, the Yanks still have a chance at passing the Astros.

Not much of one. It looks like the Stros' Magic Number for HFA is 1.

2 wins behind with 3 games to play and they lose the tiebreaker. Yanks have to win out and Astros lose out.
