Another Red Sox prospect in the news for the wrong reasons.

Cody Kukuk was a pretty decent prospect, got as far as AAA. His career is now over. Such a shame.

Cody only got as far as A+....he hasn't been convicted of anything...and he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory. Other than that, dead on.

Kukuk signed for $800k only three years ago, so he must be a really special kind of idiot if he already burned through all that money.

My guess is that it wasn't a money-driven crime. Four men for one home invasion where a little cash, a couple cell phones, an X360, and "the contents of a safe" were taken. Unless that safe had thousands of dollars or gold bars or something, I think it was a personal crime.

Or maybe the victims were drug dealers and didn't feel like mentioning that 1000 Percocet pills were also taken, I don't know.

Sorry, thought I saw Sickels tweet he was a AAA player. Yea, innocent before proven guilty, but his career is over.

Probably, but Josh Lueke is (somehow, inexplicably) still cashing MLB paychecks, so anything can happen.

edit to add: I guess Lueke was "granted free agency" after the season. Maybe someone in the California Penal League needs a reliever. Anyway, he was cashing MLB paychecks as recently as Summer 2014.

Kukuk came with some concerns about his makeup when he got drafted. He now has a DWI arrest and this on top of a pretty unimpressive performance in the low minors. He has a live arm so maybe his career isn't over but I'd bet he gets released in the next few weeks and has to spend at least a short time playing independent ball somewhere. That of course assumes he doesn't get convicted and join Ricky Vaughn in the California Penal League.

He was arrested a few days after two others, I guess I was kinda hoping the first two guys arrested implicated Kukuk out of spite, but that probably isn't the case.

And I wonder how much of the 800K Kukuk actually saw after taxes, fees and such. *I* could make 400K last a damn long time, but lots of people (and yes it would be idiotic) could burn through that fairly quickly.

That was kind of my working assumption.

^ Yeah, that is a fairly common thing that happens.

An $800,000 signing bonus, of which the player actually gets half or slightly more than half after taxes and agent fees, is routinely gone within months, I imagine. The player that sees a sudden $500,000 dropped into his bank account is highly prone to spend much of it on cars/houses for himself and family, and the rest doesn't last long living that pimpin' lifestyle.
