Two no-hitters in one game. How?

There were two no-hitters thrown in the Dominican Summer League on Thursday. They just so happened to be in the same game.

Cubs Red defeated Pirates affiliate PIT Black, 2-0, in a seven-inning contest that featured zero hits for either side. Six pitchers combined on the feat: Juan Bello, Wilber Rodriguez and Yohan Crispin for the Cubs; Jonathan Salazar, Dioris Valdez and Hader Blanco for the Bucs.

Cubs Red’s only two runs of the game each came in the bottom of the first inning and were on a pair of errors. Leadoff hitters Darlyn De Leon walked to open the frame and moved to second on another free pass by Joan Delgado two batters later. When De Leon and Delgado pulled off a double steal, a throwing error by catcher Richard Ramirez brought De Leon in from third. Two batters later, Delgado also scored on a throwing error by PIT Black shortstop Kelvin Diaz.

Despite the zero hits allowed the rest of the way, Pirates pitchers remained as wild as their fielders, issuing seven walks over six innings on their side of the no-hitter. They did fan nine batters along the way too.

By comparison, Cubs hurlers were much more in control, issuing only four free passes in their seven frames. The starter Bello—an 18-year-old right-hander who signed with Chicago back in January—completed four of those innings, striking out two and walking only one.

The only hit in this game didn't lead to a run.

@2: Yeah, I listened to that game on the radio and couldn't believe it was a double no hitter until (off memory) the seventh.

There was one in the majors - https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN191705020.shtml 1917 - Cincinnati vs the Cubs. https://sabr.org/gamesproj/game/may-2-1917-fred-toney-and-reds-prevail-1-0-in-double-no-hitter-against-cubs-hippo-vaughn/ gives a full detailed account of it. 1-0 in extras. A hit was given up in the 10th.

My favorite part of that game is that the Cub pitcher also threw a complete game and faced fewer hitters than Koufax did in throwing a perfect game.

So after MLB eliminated no hitters that were less than 9 innings, and also eliminated those with hits after the 9th, has anyone ever lost a no hitter?

IIRC, there used to be several 8 inning no hit losses because they were on the road. But I don't think there were any 9 inning no hit losses at home. There's no reason why it couldn't happen.

According to Wikipedia, there are still two 9-inning losses counted as no-hitters:

April 23, 1964 - Ken Johnson of the Colt .45s, lost 1-0 to the Reds at home
April 30, 1967 - Steve Barber (8.2) and Stu Miller (0.1) of the Orioles, lost 2-1 to the Tigers at home

Outside of the otherworldly performance of Koufax in the game linked in post 2, is this favourite diddy.

It's interesting to read about Bob Hendley, Koufax' opponent. I didn't remember him – Hendley's best seasons were in the early 60s, just before I was old enough to follow. Those were still times when a guy might go back down to the minors after a substantial ML career (48-52 over seven seasons); Hendley pitched well in 1968 and '69 but in the Mets organization, which had plenty of major-league arms at the time. I am a little surprised that he didn't return to the majors after the 1969 expansion. Instead Hendley began a high-school coaching career in 1970 that lasted thirty years.

I get that this was a joke, but for the definition of this joke, would the phantom runner count as 'reaching' base, after all they were just placed there, so I could see an extra inning game in which they put the phantom runner on, and both teams scoring just that guy 9 times with one team doing it in the 19th inning.

Cubs Red

They really named the team after two MLB teams? Shoulda went with White and Red Sox or Angels Dodgers of Los Angeles.
