Umpires remove ball for likely inspection in Trevor Bauer’s start

Umpires at Wednesday’s Athletics-Los Angeles Dodgers game reportedly removed a ball from the field, ostensibly for inspection, following Trevor Bauer’s first inning of work.

A’s radio announcer Vince Cotroneo shared the news during Wednesday’s contest, which ended in a 4-3 A’s win on Mitch Moreland’s walk-off single.

If nothing else, the optics of this situation are interesting. Bauer, the prized Dodgers righty, has publicly challenged MLB and commissioner Rob Manfred repeatedly throughout the years.

On March 24, MLB reportedly issued a memo in an attempt to enforce the ban of foreign substances on baseballs.

This is being done under the Kruk Clause in the official rules.

Don’t criticize the guy the who is in charge of the “hunk of metal”. Going forward, this will be known as the Luhnow rule.

If a dab of sunscreen and rosin equals a $40 M contract, I need to find some rosin.

It's a little more than that, Walt, but he's been very public about there being something extra to spin rates.

More from Rosenthal:

The umpires in Bauer’s start against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday collected multiple balls he threw during the game, according to major-league sources. The balls had visible markings and were sticky, and were sent to the league offices for further inspection, the sources said.

Yet, even if the balls Bauer threw are found to have contained foreign substances, it remains to be seen whether the league can prove he was responsible for their application, or whether any punishment imposed by commissioner Rob Manfred would stand.

#4: Yes I know ... increasing the spin rate 30% on my 45-mph fastball is not likely to earn me $40 M.

#5: It would probably result in a closer eye, opponent requests to check him, etc.

On Bauer, source says MLBPA would challenge any discipline not covered under current rules, and whatever leaks there might be would risk undermining efforts to work cooperatively toward any rules changes.

Bauer tweeted 'lol to
@MLB
who already has “sources” talking to..bloggers'
Might get interesting.

i would have bet a very large amount of money (well, by my cheap standards) before the season started that we'd have a story like this about bauer and mlb by now.
