USA Baseball Fails to Earn Olympic Berth

When baseball returns to the Olympics next summer, the United States might not be there. The American team failed to clinch a spot in the 2020 Olympics during the WBSC Premier 12 tournament this month. The U.S. lost to Mexico in a thrilling bronze medal game Sunday afternoon in Tokyo (MEX 3, USA 2).

In 10 innings.

Watched this on Facebook live last night. It was an entertaining game and while I don’t love the extra inning format it does bring up some interesting strategic issues. In the top of the tenth Brosius had #5 hitter Bobby Dalbec drop a bunt down on a 2-0 pitch. Generally I’d think the visiting team should play for the big inning there, one run isnt as valuable when you know your opponent will start first and second with no outs as well.

Well we sent our best - guys like Brian Flynn and Brooks Pounders - and came up short, you just have to tip your cap to our opponents.

Oh stop it. Several long-time major leaguers were on the team, such as Erik Kratz and Clayton Richard.

The WBC is a better designed tournament than Olympic baseball could ever be, imo.

Sixteen years ago, the USA (defending gold medalists, no less) failed to make the 2004 tournament, due to a loss to...Mexico.

Thanks, Montezuma!

Kind of an embarrassment to not have the US playing baseball in the Olympics.

That said, Olympic baseball itself is also kind of an embarrassment for as long as they're using those stupid extra-inning rules with ghost runners.

The US team has another chance to play for the Olympics in the spring.

I think they're actually ghost batters.

Are they susceptible to being picked off by ghost pitchers?

Yeah, these are kind of the opposite of ghost runners. A ghost runner happens when there's not a runner where one is supposed to be, but you pretend there is. This is where there is an actual runner where one is not supposed to be, but you pretend that he's supposed to be there.

Hot take: International competitions made up of teams competing based on the players' country of birth/residence are silly. I dislike the World Cup, various world championships, and team sports at the Olympics. I'm generally ok with the individual events at the Olympics.

That's a hot take all right.

Wait, they're using Manfred's extra inning rules? Why? I don't think it would even lead to any shorter games. It increases each team's expected runs by the same amount, so you'd just expect extra inning games with higher scores.

On second thought, maybe not. If you have a team that draws lots of walks, they're going to be at a disadvantage against a team that puts the ball in play. To make extra innings games shorter you need to give one team an advantage over the other, and I guess this would do it if the walk rates between the teams was different. (Or, from the other way of looking at it, a team that pitches to contact would be at a disadvantage.)

But I also don't know why you'd care about shortening extra inning games. Especially in the Olympics which, I assume, no one will watch. The countries with real baseball have better (higher-quality competition) baseball to watch, and no one else cares enough to watch baseball a baseball game.

i think it's the other way around, ziggy - the us is moving toward adopting the int'l rules.
