Utility player Eric Sogard returns to Brewers as free agent after strong ‘19 season

For the second consecutive day, the Brewers signed a Rays free agent, and the face was quite familiar. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Milwaukee agreed Wednesday with utility player Eric Sogard on a one-year deal with a club option for 2021 for a guaranteed $4.5 million.

The Brewers have not announced the deal.

It will be the second time around with the Brewers for the popular Sogard, 33, who played for them in 2017 and for a half-season in ‘18 before being released after falling into a deep slump. Sogard revived his career by signing a free-agent deal with Toronto and performing well there before being traded to Tampa Bay for the playoff push last season.

In 110 games for those teams, Sogard established career highs with a .290 batting average, 13 home runs, 40 runs batted in, .457 slugging percentage and .810 OPS. He saw most of his action at second base but also played shortstop, third base, left field and right field.
