Vaughn Grissom makes history with HR, steal in debut

Starting at second and batting ninth, Grissom went 2-for-4 with a strikeout and a stolen base in his debut, securing his first career hit and homer in one at-bat and helping to turn two double plays in the Braves’ 8-4 win over the Red Sox.

Grissom reached base in his first at-bat after grounding into a forceout in the third. His next time up, he struck out on four pitches to open the fifth. When he stepped up to the plate for his third at-bat, Grissom hammered a first-pitch fastball out of the ballpark.

“The competitive nature kicked in,” Grissom said. “I had a couple of at-bats, and I failed a couple of times. So it was just like, ‘All right, like you’re down.’ I’m not gonna say I expected it, but like, I need to do something.”

Grissom became the youngest player in AL/NL history to homer and swipe a bag in his debut—though watching him play, it’s easy to forget his age. Whether it be his composure on the field or the conviction in his bat flip, Grissom is already displaying a big league attitude just one game in.

“He did great. Nothing fazed him,” manager Brian Snitker said.

That was quite a pause to admire his home run shot. I'm surprised he (I assume) didn't wake up this morning with a baseball-shaped bruise in the small of his back.

And no, he is not Marquis' kid (Marquis has a kid that was drafted by the Nats this year though)

It's not fair, seems like the Braves get every good high school player in the south. I guess they just have better area scouts? How did Grissom last until the 11th round? Did he have a growth spurt?

That was some pretty loud cheering in Fenway for a road team. How many Braves fans were in attendance?

Speaking for the RF bleachers on Tuesday, a few pockets, enough to be noticeable, especially since there are large chunks not selling out these days. We did what seemed like a fair job of shouting down the Chop in my area, but the Braves fans definitely have more to cheer about in 2022.

(Also, bringing the Chop on the road is kind of icky. Like, I know I'll have a ton of obnoxious Yankees fans in my area tomorrow, but they'll just be garden-variety annoying.)

(More fun also: Enough Orioles fans were apparently in town for tonight's single game to get "Oh!" yelled out during the anthem. I suppose there's a chunk of the southeast where the Orioles were/are people's AL team and the Braves their NL team.)

I wonder if many fans who don't hail from the Mid-Atlantic or AL East cities are aware of the "Oh!" shout, particularly since it's been at least a generation since any TV viewers would hear the National Anthem.

The O's were on free TV a couple of times a week when I first moved to NC in the late 80s. I think it was gone just a few years later but they definitely had a presence in the mid-south. (I don't recall if any Braves games were on free TV but "everybody" had TBS on cable anyway. And yes I know that was all 30+ years ago when most baseball fans hadn't even reached their 40th birthday yet.)

I wrote about Grissom in the chatter. Nice minor-league track record that y'all should love -- high BA, low Ks, steals -- and a very quick rise. Anybody know anything about his defense?

when I saw the O's in Toronto @ Exhibition way back when, I was the only O's fan in my part of the park. and when I screamed "OH!" at the appropriate time during the anthem, all the BlueJay fans turned around and gawked at me like I just had shot the pope.

as for the Braves fans showing up in Boston this week, you should see the # of Sox fans that cram into Truist when their team is in town. until last year, they were louder than the Braves fans in the park ...

This is not a big deal when you are able to perform like this against the AAAA team that calls itself the Boston Red Sox. Now do that against Houston, Dodgers or Brewers pitching and I'll be impressed.
