Veteran LHP Happ, Twins have deal

The Twins moved to solidify their starting rotation on Wednesday, reaching an agreement on a one-year contract with veteran left-hander J.A. Happ, a source told’s Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the deal, which is pending a physical and was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

With Jake Odorizzi, Rich Hill and Homer Bailey all free agents, the Twins have been in search of depth to support a rotation that features Kenta Maeda and José Berríos at the top.

Happ brings no shortage of experience. The 38-year-old has spent 14 seasons in the Majors with the Phillies, Astros, Blue Jays, Mariners, Pirates and Yankees, amassing a record of 123-92 and an ERA of 3.98 over 324 games (298 starts).

Hope it turns out better than the Homer Bailey deal last spring. I'm expecting Happ to be the 5th starter and the Twins to sign another member of the rotation before spring training begins.

I think a team could do a lot worse than Happ. He hasn't lost any velocity, and I think getting out of DNYS will help the HR rate. He's a really solid bet to give you 150 IP at an ERA between 4 and 4.50. That's a quality 4th starter.

Looking at Happ's numbers the last few years, $8 million seems like quite a bargain. He could certainly fall off, but he's been league average at worst and healthier than Quintana who got the exact same contract.

Agree with 2 and 3. This seems like a bargain. As long as you don't expect much, you'll get value here as he'll give you decent innings and knows how to get guys out at a decent clip.

The Twins have been very slow on the free-agent market (I suppose most teams have), but overall this is fine. On my wish list are another (better) starter, an upgrade at SS (so Polanco can be the super-utility guy), and a bat(DH).
