Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to Participate in Home Run Derby

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will follow in his father’s footsteps and participate in the Home Run Derby next month in Cleveland, MLB Network’s Hazel Mae reports.

The Blue Jays’ rookie third baseman is the son of Hall of Fame outfielder Vlad Sr., who played for the Montreal Expos for the first eight years of his 16-year MLB career. The senior Guerrero won the 2007 Derby at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Guerrero Jr. has hit seven homers since the 20-year-old made his highly-anticipated MLB debut in April. He is batting .249 with 17 runs. He was ranked the No. 1 prospect in Major League Baseball before his debut and has been a spectacle all season since his first at-bat.

None of the good hitters are willing to participate? Thought the $1M prize was supposed to change that.

Probably puts on a show in BP. I hope he didn't get Vogelbach's spot just cuz ... fun!

Vlad Jr. is exactly who they should be inviting to the Home Run Derby. Would you rather have some mediocre veteran who fluked his way to 21 homers in the first half of the season? I hear Jorge Soler is available.

is Pete Alonso invited? He mixes and matches laser beams, and rockets into the stratosphere, in real baseball. both versions are remarkable.

WRONG! AT&T Park was the 3rd name for China Basin Field in effect in 2007. But I wouldn't expect an algorithm to recognize that itty bitty distinction.

If Jr.'s on that field for the contest, Eloy Jiménez better be there, too.

I want to see large adult sons like Luke Voit and Dan Vogelbach. Jorge Soler can hit some tape measure shots.

Longest average HR distance:
Russell Martin (!) 430 ft
Nomar Mazara 430
Vlad Guerrero 427
Garrett Cooper 426
Ryan McMahon 425
Mike Zunino 424
Jason Castro 423
Tyler Naquin 422
Ronald Acuna 422
Keon Broxton 421
Eloy Jimenez 421

Um...Juan Soto, anyone??

I don't give a crap about his home run distance, it's just downright fun to watch him enjoy playing baseball and mashing dingers.

Nomar Mazara has 1340 feet worth of homers against the Sox the past couple of games. One went 505 feet.

Alonso already has tied the Mets' (pitiful) all-time rookie HR record of 26 set by Darryl Strawberry, and we have a ways to go before the All-Star Game.

other than months-long binges by Dave Kingman in the 1970s and a weird Todd Hundley season, mankind has never seen a behemoth like this crush baseballs while wearing this uniform. might be interesting to see.

It is just about entertainment and anyone who can mash them nearly 500 feet should be in.

I'm always struck by how little Vlad, Jr's body resembles his father's. He's much, much bigger, especially than the skin-and-bones Vlad, Sr of his Canada days. You could practically see the father's skeleton when he was young.
