HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!

Contreras already hit by a pitch today. WTF. He doesn't crowd inside to nearly the extent someone like Rizzo does.

Acuna is so freakin' good
   4. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: April 16, 2021 at 03:53 PM (#6013846)
And Baez has been hit twice now? Good lord, the Cubs gotta stop getting hit so much (more HBP than hits)
   5. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: April 16, 2021 at 03:59 PM (#6013849)
Duffy now...HBP #4
   6. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: April 16, 2021 at 04:41 PM (#6013856)
Updated Joc-o-meter: .100/.190/.176.
   7. dejarouehg Posted: April 16, 2021 at 05:06 PM (#6013859)
Is there a reason Pederson can't field a ball cleanly? 3 times he's juggled a ball so far.
   8. dejarouehg Posted: April 16, 2021 at 05:37 PM (#6013867)
And he catches that one!

Yermin Mercedes continues to inspire car-related punlines. Other than the for-now untouchable Ichiro Suzuki and Whitey Ford, are there other car names he has bypassed or approaching on his way up? Bad handwriting can make Acuna look like a car but that might be stretching it.
   10. Walt Davis Posted: April 16, 2021 at 05:45 PM (#6013871)
Replay ... Joc Pederson is SAFE and stays above the half Mendoza line for a few more AB!!

This is what passes for excitement in this Cubs season so far

A guy named Luis Mercedes played for Baltimore a bit in the early '90s. I think Mike Lincoln was a reliver for someone sometime.

If you want to get classic, you have guys like Tim and Daniel Hudson.

Sahadev Sharma @sahadevsharma

The Cubs are 0-for-7 on the day with RISP, dropping them to 7-for-82 in those situations on the season.

Joe Sheehan @joe_sheehan

I guess the best way to frame it is this:

The #Cubs started the year 6-for-57 with runners in scoring position...and then they went into a slump.

1 for their last 25.

[9] Does former White Sox pitcher Rich Dotson count? Anthony Ferrari pitched 4 IP for the Expos in 2003.
   14. Walt Davis Posted: April 16, 2021 at 06:01 PM (#6013878)
The car team

There's a Tomohiro Honda who played a bit of indy ball and several in the NPB, the longest-playing of which (in the b-r database) was Yuichi, a light-hitting 2B who played 1400 games. In addition to Ichiro there are Mac and Kurt ... Kurt's been around for a long time.

Of course lots of Fords. There have been 3 Chryslers in the minors, the longest-serving being Clint, a reliever who briefly made it to AAA. Boy, b-r goes really deep these days picking up Ismail Pontiac who played for Paris in the French Division I. Chevy Clarke played several years in the minors.

Franklin Stubbs apparently was nicknamed Cadillac but that seems like cheating. No DeSotos but Gene Packard pitched for 8 years. I assume we can pick up some more if we look at model names.

Anyway, the car team is gonna be a lot of Fords, Suzukis and Mercedes.

Pablo Sandoval, pinch runner
   16. Walt Davis Posted: April 16, 2021 at 06:02 PM (#6013880)
OMG .... the Braves just sent in Fat Panda as a pinch-runner.
   17. Walt Davis Posted: April 16, 2021 at 06:04 PM (#6013881)
1B ump having a bad day.

Bad day for the 1b ump. Geez.

Let's see if we can outscore the Cubs

Yes, but he can still be on the team.

Carlos Martinez just completed an inning that featured: three singles; two doubles; two walks; and two hit batsmen. That's 9 baserunners, if you're counting.

The most comical part was that one of the walks was intentional, to load the bases for the pitcher, whom he promptly drilled to force in a run.

By the time Martinez was 25, he was a two-time All Star, had just completed a season with 217 K's, and his stuff was filthy, even if not always controlled.

That was his last season as a full-time starter (2017), and since then he's been hurt a lot, throwing fewer than 200 innings total, gone back and forth from the rotation to the bullpen, spent some time as a closer, and now finds himself getting rocked every time he takes the mound.

He turns 30 in September, and I don't think he has much left.

   24. phredbird Posted: April 16, 2021 at 08:31 PM (#6013911)

god martinez looked bad in that inning, but there were two ground balls that really should have been outs then a fly ball blown around by the wind and completely misjudged by the OFs, then the dam broke.

but it seems to me he has a bad habit of blowing up after one or two bad breaks.

when he came up he did look like a stud.

he's gained weight and i think it affects his delivery.

Max Scherzer passed Cy Young tonight for 22nd place on the Career Strikeout Leaderboard. Anybody besides Andy see both of them?
   26. Walt Davis Posted: April 16, 2021 at 10:00 PM (#6013920)
A major Schwarbomb walks off the Nats with a 1-0 win.

Says a lot right there about how the game has changed. Scherzer is just shy of having thrown one-third the innings Young threw.

That one went 463 feet, all the way to the second deck concourse in RF.

Those classy, classy fans in the Bronx delayed the game by throwing multiple baseballs at Tampa fielders. Fortunately no one has been hurt so far.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: April 16, 2021 at 10:23 PM (#6013926)
Being Jackie Robinson Day I thought the Twins had Mo Vaughn at first ... just Sano.
   31. Howie Menckel Posted: April 16, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6013928)
Yankees announcer Michael Kay described the tantrums as "disgraceful" and later, "not a good look."

team is 5-8 with 149 games left.

that said, last losing season was 1992 at 76-86.

there are 35-year-old NYC investment bankers (among many occupations) who do not believe a season could be played with the Yankees as irrelevant.

if Kluber and Taillon spit the bit, could be quite the summer of discontent.

monitor.

Just looked at the in-game box score of the Dodgers-Padres game, and the lowest OPS among the position players in the Dodgers lineup is Chris Taylor at .941.

Good god.
   39. Hombre Brotani Posted: April 17, 2021 at 02:33 AM (#6013945)
That was a fantastically exciting 10th inning. Dennis Santana was JACKED UP.

Breaking news! Tim Locastro caught stealing by Yan Gomes after starting his career 28-for-28!

And of course the next batter hit a homer.
