WaPo: Tom Boswell: Orioles Might Be Cutting Costs In Anticipation Of A Sale

Boz thinks the Orioles may be cutting costs to prep for a sale after ailing 91-year old owner Peter Angelos heads to Hades:

So if you hope to sell any business, but not for a year or two, what do you do? You make your business as beautiful as possible. Or you cut expenses to the bone, take the heat for layoffs, grab all the profits you can and maybe end up with the lure of a No. 1 overall draft pick in the process.

The long Nationals’ nightmare might be over soon.

This was submitted late on Friday, but didn’t appear until this morning (Monday), bearing the original time stamp, which meant it was only visible if you scrolled back 3 days. I’ll give it a bump because the article seems BBTF-worthy, although the clearly broken user-submission process may also be appropriate for some discussion - not that previous efforts here have done any good.

How locked into OPACY are the Orioles lease-wise? I have to think the MASN dispute is going to scare away buyers, and there have been whispers that Nashville could make a play for the team.

The Orioles & the Maryland Stadium Authority recently extended the lease through 2023, with the Orioles holding an option for 5 years beyond that. That’s been seen as a placeholder to allow for more complex negotiations about the Orioles using the stadium for concerts and other money-making activities, although the short term does make a franchise move a topic of interest. Boz sees Camden Yards as an asset that makes the franchise attractive to buyers who’d keep the team in Baltimore, and he suggests that money being put aside for MASN payments may be a preliminary step in resolving the dispute to make the franchise more attractive to potential buyers. The key seems to be Peter Angelos kicking the bucket before too long.
