These Cubs uniforms are embarrassingly bad. They look like a not particularly well-dressed beer league softball team.

Willson Contreras got his helmet knocked off by a pitch from the Cardinals' Luis Garcia. Yadier Molina did a nice job of keeping the peace, making sure things didn't escalate. I wonder if Contreras' respect for Ydi helped to defuse things.

Why are the Cubs wearing what looks like uniforms for an unlicensed video game version of Chicago (NL)?

And now Cabrera---the third Cardinals pitcher to hit a batter this game---plunks Heyward to load the bases.

Cabrera is the guy that hit Harper in the face.

The Cardinals increase their MLB-leading hit-batsmen total to 64---eleven ahead of the second-place Cubs---and maintain their record pace, now around 116, which would break the record of 95.

The Cubs scored three in the first on a two-out liner dropped by Dylan Carlson when it popped out of his glove as he slid on his belly.

It would have been a great catch, but once it was in his glove he really should have had it. It wasn't impacting the ground that jarred it out, I think it just ricocheted out of his mitt.

And Kris Bryant comes off the bench in the 7th to bookend the scoring, with another bases-clearing hit to make it 7-2 Cubs.

Five-run 7th on two hits for the Cubs, capped by ex-Cardinal Patrick Wisdom's 12th homer in 111 ab.

I still do not approve of the fan interference call at all. Home team fan steals a ball, and I'm not sure that Heyward had a good chance at it, simply because the wall was distracting him. It wasn't like he had his glove up, we are talking about he was holding his glove at knee level trying to catch a fly ball that was still 15 feet in the air.

Cubs will win three here and all the talk about selling will cease

Are they still scouting the Mets prospects?
   12. Walt Davis Posted: July 09, 2021 at 08:58 PM (#6028461)
Why in the world would a sweep of the Cards make the least bit of difference? At best the Cubs would still be 6.5 back of the Brewers, still 2.5 back of the Reds and 5 back of the Padres. (That's assuming the Reds sweep the Brewers and the Rox sweep the Padres, neither very likely.)

In fact, I was wondering what's the last time there was a more meaningless Cubs-Cards series.

Decent inning by the Mets.

speaking of which, Post 12

"St. Louis Cardinals transferred RHP Carlos Martinez from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Right thumb sprain."

not that he was any good but

so nationwide chatter about the 3rd-place Cubs selling and.... seems like nothing about a 4th-place Cardinals fire sale

meanwhile, the Mets are what seems like it could be a long rain delay with a 13-3 lead and 1 out in the bottom of the 8th...
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: July 09, 2021 at 10:27 PM (#6028465)
um, how about an 8-run rule if the game is into the 6th inning or later and then there is a weather delay?
   16. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 09, 2021 at 10:57 PM (#6028466)
Ohtani goes deep again. Number 33 hits the upper deck walkway, 463 feet away, 116.5 MPH off the bat.
   17. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 09, 2021 at 11:28 PM (#6028467)
Angels outfielders really are terrible. A nice play there could have saved a couple of runs. No one's signed Adam Eaton yet. right?
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: July 10, 2021 at 12:10 AM (#6028468)
Giants also embarrassing themselves by wearing Walmart-clearance uniforms tonight. you'd think a team having a year like they are having might want to pass on the amateur-hour stuff, but no.

it looks like the Nationals are playing an exhibition against their club employees, and for some reason it is being televised.

Dodgers infield defense is an absolute disaster.
   20. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 10, 2021 at 01:00 AM (#6028471)

Shohei Ohtani of the @Angels now has 16 home runs in his last 21 games.

That's the most HR by any player over a 21-game span in a single season in American League history.
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: July 10, 2021 at 01:15 AM (#6028472)
it's Schwarber-esque!
   22. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 10, 2021 at 01:47 AM (#6028473)
Angels bullpen gives it up, as they have all season long.
