East Coast bias (i.e. sleep). Also who makes a big deal out of anything on a Saturday. I will say that a guy with a history of shoulder problems probably should not be doing that Padres' HR celebration which seemed to involve fiving in several directions and odd angles.
Arguably the big story of that game was Darvish 7 IP, 1 R.
Meanwhile, down 2 with the leadoff guy on in the bottom of the 7th, the Cubs just missed grounding into a DP so did a better job of it the second time. That was anticlimactiv.

Gant's day is over, but he qualifies for a quality start, another one for the Cardinals this week, after a season with just one, now they have a few more. (I think this is 5th quality start for the Cardinals, and they missed a sixth by one out because of Shildt over managing.)
17. cardsfanboy

Not sure how I feel about that pinch hit attempt. Cardinals are up 2-0, in the sixth inning, the starting pitcher for the Cardinals has thrown only 80 pitches, has only allowed 3 hits (two walks though) at the same time, 1st and third two outs and you have a decent hitter in Dean on the bench, you kinda have to make the move.
It failed, but it was going to fail most of the time anyway, you still have to take the chance... this is one of those decisions that no matter what you do, there is a negative.

I get why the Cardinals are not warming up a pitcher, but as of right now, they might want to... Cardinals batting with 2 outs, but the 7th hitter is up to bat... You kinda have to at least prepare for a potential situation that the pitcher might bat this inning.
As I'm typing this, Reyes gets up in the bullpen, and is just more or less stretching up, which is a good plan.

Yankees leading Indians 2-1 through 7, with Cole at 111-pitches (3 hits, 11 K), and Bieber done at 119 (4 hits, 9 K). Is that a 2021 ‘record’? Not many games with both starters over 100 pitches, I would guess.

I just figured a shortstop would field a ball to his right and throw to third at least once or twice a season.
3B is not near the bag and will usually be breaking to his left on a ball hit towards the hole. By the time 3B gets back to the bag for the force, not enough time to throw across to get the batter. If it's that close to the SS and that hard hit, easier to try for the DP via 2B. So you do see 6-5 forces now and then, maybe more likely 6-5 tag plays, when the SS is deep in the hole with momentun going away from 2B ... maybe if a Molina is the batter.

the MLB Network window for this LAD-SDP game is for 7 pm to 10 pm ET.
in real life, it took a bases-loaded, inning-ending DP to get us to the middle of the 7th inning as "the buzzer sounded."
maybe part of MLB's problem is that they are in denial. if you are cool with 4-hour games, then prove it and list the game as "7 pm to 11 pm." sure, it might end a little early - but it's almost always going to be a lot more accurate than the current effort.

Then he swings at the next pitch, again, about a foot outside the strike zone.

Not a great showing by Jimmy Nelson, entering with a two-run lead---single, fly out, single, single, single, tie game.

re my [80]comment LAD did not IBB Tatis when he represented [76] the tying run, and Roberts sent in Jimmy Nelson for his first save ever, and had no one warming up behind him in the bullpen? Nelson allowed runs, didn't get the save, we go to Extras.

Nelson has been healthy enough to throw 22 (terrible) MLB innings in 2018-2020, and he doesn't turn 32 until June, so - ok I got nothing.
they had him pitch 25 and 18 pitches in his 2 innings.
Jansen's workload will be tightly monitored all year, and Knebel's arm just fell off the other day. Treinen, they had hoped to stay away from.
I assumed they'd finish tonight with Price and Graterol (who is just off the DL), but they brought them in earlier. I guess The Jimmy Nelson, Boy Closer plan was there all along.
also could be that, hey, they hardly ever lose - so does it even matter what we do? you know we're going to win anyway.
Plate ump is not exactly covering himself in glory tonight.

ya, doc blinked i guess. i can't believe he didn't think to just IBB hosmer and keep the force on every base.
one bad move can kill ya in a game like this, especially as noted elsewhere, you never know when the ump is going to call a ball a strike and vice versa.
also could be that, hey, they hardly ever lose - so does it even matter what we do? you know we're going to win anyway.
That seems to be Dave Roberts' philosophy this year. He's put sub-par relievers into games in big spots to stop guys from going back to back. It works out sometimes, and blows up other times. But Jansen has also blown up when he's pitched back to back games. One issue with the Dodgers is that their bullpen is pretty awful, so when Treinen and Jansen aren't available, it can get ugly. The one thing I didn't get was not doing a squeeze play, even if just a safety squeeze with Kershaw up and 1st/3rd with one out.

this one went a shade over 5 hours for 11 innings.
the Mets scored in the first inning on a grand slam by Daryl Strawberry that plated Howard Johnson, Keith Hernandez, and Gary Carter for a 4-0 edge only 5 batters into the game.
the Mets then went scoreless for 16 innings, including at one point the famous final appearance in the field of Rusty Staub's distinguished career. Rusty was, well, maybe he could have mixed in a salad at that point of his career but he was a gourmet chef with a stellar Manhattan ribs joint (still the best I have ever had). hijinks ensued, as the Mets kept moving him to RF for RH batters - then having him waddle over to our LF side for LH batters. Rusty even made a diving catch. what a day.
time of game? 5 hours, 21 minutes. somehow they squeezed in 7 extra innings in only a few minutes of additional time before the Mets won it in the 18th when Mookie Wilson scored on an error by the first baseman.

3B is not near the bag and will usually be breaking to his left on a ball hit towards the hole. By the time 3B gets back to the bag for the force, not enough time to throw across to get the batter. If it's that close to the SS and that hard hit, easier to try for the DP via 2B. So you do see 6-5 forces now and then, maybe more likely 6-5 tag plays, when the SS is deep in the hole with momentun going away from 2B ... maybe if a Molina is the batter.
tatis with a home run already today.
5 HR in his last 11 AB in dodger stadium.
sheesh.
Total inches moved by Dodgers batters to try to avoid getting hit by pitch: 0
the two i saw were breaking balls right at their thigh. no self respecting batter tries to avoid a pitch like that.
in real life, it took a bases-loaded, inning-ending DP to get us to the middle of the 7th inning as "the buzzer sounded."
maybe part of MLB's problem is that they are in denial. if you are cool with 4-hour games, then prove it and list the game as "7 pm to 11 pm." sure, it might end a little early - but it's almost always going to be a lot more accurate than the current effort.
Then the pitcher finally throws a strike on 1-2----why?---which Tatis hits into left for a single.
EDIT: Then he walks the bases loaded before wriggling out of it by getting the next two guys.
Makes me wonder about the Dodgers pen---are guys injured or just unavailable?
Does it happen at night too? Dave Roberts, on the air?
re my [80]comment LAD did not IBB Tatis when he represented [76] the tying run, and Roberts sent in Jimmy Nelson for his first save ever, and had no one warming up behind him in the bullpen? Nelson allowed runs, didn't get the save, we go to Extras.
Great for the fans...so someone says, ghost runner on base.
He was already tied for the NL lesd going into the game, with 16.
All LAD needs is a poke, but I admit, this is a *little* exciting.
they had him pitch 25 and 18 pitches in his 2 innings.
Jansen's workload will be tightly monitored all year, and Knebel's arm just fell off the other day. Treinen, they had hoped to stay away from.
I assumed they'd finish tonight with Price and Graterol (who is just off the DL), but they brought them in earlier. I guess The Jimmy Nelson, Boy Closer plan was there all along.
also could be that, hey, they hardly ever lose - so does it even matter what we do? you know we're going to win anyway.
why on god's green earth did they pitch to hosmer?
ya, doc blinked i guess. i can't believe he didn't think to just IBB hosmer and keep the force on every base.
one bad move can kill ya in a game like this, especially as noted elsewhere, you never know when the ump is going to call a ball a strike and vice versa.
I have mentioned on several occasions attending the Mets' 18-inning win over the Pirates on April 28, 1985
the Mets scored in the first inning on a grand slam by Daryl Strawberry that plated Howard Johnson, Keith Hernandez, and Gary Carter for a 4-0 edge only 5 batters into the game.
the Mets then went scoreless for 16 innings, including at one point the famous final appearance in the field of Rusty Staub's distinguished career.
5 hours, 21 minutes. somehow they squeezed in 7 extra innings in only a few minutes of additional time before the Mets won it in the 18th when Mookie Wilson scored on an error by the first baseman.

.................
meanwhile, it happens every spring dept - or more precisely, about twice a year.
MLB teams down by 6+ runs after the 7th inning, in the last 50 years:
100 W
13,547 L
0-49 this season
but now 101-13,547 and 1-49
