Come on, they've won two straight.

VG Jr. just struck out with bases loaded and no out.

Chump and bust, obviously.

Crafty lefty Brett Anderson gets Vlad Jr. looking with the bases loaded and no outs in the first.
   5. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 27, 2019 at 03:36 PM (#5835904)
Reds are defending Matt Carpenter with four outfielders and nobody on the left side of the infield. Have teams been doing that all year?
   6. cardsfanboy Posted: April 27, 2019 at 03:49 PM (#5835909)
Ozuna now in third place in the NL for RBI, it's a dumb stat obviously, but it's fun to see the guy on your team doing well, when he struggled for the first week of the season.

OK, we've gone to far here. RBI is not a "dumb" stat. It's a pretty good indicator of context based hitting value. It just shouldn't be used a near complete evaluation of a player, as it was in the past.

Vlad strands another couple runners. He's a clear bust. They should probably trade him.

lord, we're only in the 6th?

reds have all kinds of time to get back in the game ... already scored once this inning ...

but gant pulls himself together and avoids more carnage.

ouch. kolten takes one in the side.

i'm happy to say that i've been wrong about him so far this year.

and bader produces!

wow, puig has an arm. kind of skyed that throw a little, though.

Man, 5 through 8 for the Yankees today:

Urshela
Gardner (against a LHP)
Maybin
Estrada

Not ... what Cashman and Co. planned for this point in the season.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: April 27, 2019 at 04:26 PM (#5835920)
The Cardinals broadcast must have gotten a new memo... instead of bagging on Ozuna every time he makes a mistake, they seem to have been told that they need to say nice things about him, so it's looking like the organization is really considering re-signing him this off season. They still won't say anything nice about Fowler though.
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 27, 2019 at 04:45 PM (#5835922)
Home plate umpire for Yankees @ Giants seems pretty poor. Called Voit out on a ball 4 inches inside, then missed a strike at least 4 inches in the zone on the SF pitcher attempting to bunt. Not going to keep the robots out with that type of work.
   15. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: April 27, 2019 at 04:45 PM (#5835923)
Bring on the ####### robot umps, that guy has been ####### trash calling pitches behind the plate today.

The Reds have. Not sure about others, seems like some have, but I can't cite specifics.

Cardinals with the win, 6-3..still among the best teams in the NL in runs per game, the runs allowed is below average(barely)

Most homers, first 248 games, Cardinals history, per Cards' broadcast today:

1. Pujols
2. Paul DeJong

Brewers did a few times... Matt did drop at least one bunt to counter it though.

sounds about right, the difference is of course age, doubles, average and other factors, but DeJong does hit a ton of homers.

What do we think of the ad they’re running now with Vlad Sr.’s message to Vlad Jr.? I can’t quite decide if it’s great or maybe a little over the top and exploitative. I think I’m leaning toward great.

[edit] obviously, he heard me talking trash ...
   26. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 27, 2019 at 05:34 PM (#5835938)
The home plate umpire for Yankees @ Giants is Jim Reynolds, who I don’t recall having an opinion on previously, but he missed on another called 3rd strike, and the Gardner HBP. I’m kind of multi-tasking today, but whenever I pay attention, he blows another one. Doesn’t seem as bad for SF, but I might have missed some.
   27. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: April 27, 2019 at 05:40 PM (#5835939)
Yeah, and that blown HBP call wasn't even appealable. Good thing that Sanchez guessed right on that last pitch he got.
   28. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: April 27, 2019 at 05:41 PM (#5835941)
As a pitcher and hitter ... I could deal with bad and consistent from an ump. You didn't have to like it, but you could adjust to it (or at least try).

Bad AND inconsistent? That's just the worst and this is one of the worst games I've seen from a home-plate ump in recent memory.
   29. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: April 27, 2019 at 05:51 PM (#5835943)
And it continues on that called 3rd strike to Voit.

1st out ... 3rd out ... why is this Yankees team so ####### terrible at fundimentals?!?!?!?!?

The current OPSes of the first 6 hitters in the Astros’ lineup:

.914
.907
.905
.879
.902
.925

They’re pretty consistent.

SOMETHING is happening with replay review and umpires looking in the rule book and other miscellaneous delays in our Nation's Crapital, but damned if I know. At this point, who gives' a rat's a$$?? The game has gone beyond stupid, it's 7-2 in the 10th inning after another series of questionable bullpen moves by noted genius Deivi Martinez. 6 minutes of needless waste of time.
   33. Bote Man Posted: April 27, 2019 at 07:42 PM (#5835954)
Jamal Collier @JamalCollier
Official time on that review: 5:40. FIVE MINUTES AND FORTY SECONDS. Like why?
   34. Bote Man Posted: April 27, 2019 at 07:54 PM (#5835956)
At long last, the pain in D.C. is over. Nats bullpen turned a 2-2 tie going into the 10th inning into an 8-3 loss. A Howie Kendrick (yes, he's still alive) solo HR was little help in mounting a comeback. Deivi continues to make questionable choices of bullpen relievers, painting himself into a corner again and again. The Nats record is the result. Joe Maddon smiles knowingly.
   35. Davo Posted: April 27, 2019 at 08:25 PM (#5835961)
I saw a highlight of the play....was very confused. Someone argued a runner left too early? Some dispute over where to put the runners? A question as to whether the errant throw actually went into the dugout or not?
   36. Bote Man Posted: April 27, 2019 at 08:53 PM (#5835967)
No idea, I was listening to the radio stream. It's less painful that way. Even they were confused. Might've been at least 2 different requests for review, but since replay is a zoster sore I didn't pay much attention.
   37. Bote Man Posted: April 27, 2019 at 08:54 PM (#5835968)
Sarah Langs @SlangsOnSports
Christian Yelich now has 14 HR, tied with 2006 Albert Pujols and 2007 Alex Rodriguez for most HR before May 1 in a single season in MLB history.
   38. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 27, 2019 at 08:58 PM (#5835969)
A question as to whether the errant throw actually went into the dugout or not?

The ball stayed out, but the Nationals catcher eventually had both feet in the dugout, which seems to be the same as the ball going into the dugout, at least according to the belated rules citation made on MASN. Seemed confusing for everyone, but review took too long.

   42. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: April 27, 2019 at 09:18 PM (#5835974)
3 outs or 1 run. Comforting thought: Hector Neris is warming up in the bullpen.
   43. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: April 27, 2019 at 09:33 PM (#5835977)
Thanks, Rhys. Now they need 3 outs before 3 runs.

Career 60th HR in just under 1000 PAs. Not bad for a one time organization fodder.
   44. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: April 27, 2019 at 09:44 PM (#5835981)
2 on, 2 outs, can Neris do it?

Hector makes it interesting but gets the K! A win is a win.
   46. Perry Posted: April 27, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5835985)
Wow, Trevor Story hit that ball a LONG way. 5-run 9th-inning rally for the Rox to take a 9-5 lead.
   47. Howie Menckel Posted: April 27, 2019 at 10:11 PM (#5835986)
Mets' starcrossed d'arnaud beats the throw to second on a double to the corner, but is called out because he couldn't keep his hand on the base after.

I have seen gripes about this on BBTF. is there anyone who would object to replays to see if the runner beats the ball to the base, and have it ruled that way only?

I can see a 'rule of law' argument, I guess, but what if they just changed the replay rule?

seems like almost everyone thinks it's a dumb use for replay. plus there are a number of calls that are obvious mistakes after replay, but deemed "unreviewable." why is this an exception?
   48. Perry Posted: April 27, 2019 at 10:17 PM (#5835987)
Good thing Wade Davis has a 4-run lead, this looks like one of those games where he might need it.
   49. Yonder Alonso in misguided trousers (cardinal) Posted: April 27, 2019 at 10:17 PM (#5835988)
I generally see your point (that is, Howie @ 47), but in this case d'Arnaud came off the base by a good six inches or more-- it seemed more like his momentum legit took him past the base so that he couldn't hold on to it, rather than anything else. It wasn't like he lifted a finger off and the fielder tagged him at just the right moment.

In other news, Alonso just homered to bring it to 6-5 Brewers.
   50. Howie Menckel Posted: April 27, 2019 at 10:25 PM (#5835991)
(partly agree, Yonder, although d'Arnaud got pulled further off the base by the push of the tag. at least it wasn't the one where the runner holds the base until the fielder pushes his hand off)

Most homers before May 1, Mets history:

1-t. Pete Alonso, 9 (2019)
1-t. Neil Walker, 9 (2016)
1-t. John Buck, 9 (2013)
1-t. Carlos Delgado, 9 (2006)
1-t. Dave Kingman, 9 (1976)

..............

SEASON TOTALS

Alonso ??
Walker 23
Buck 15
Delgado 38
Kingman 37 (had 32 by July 18, missed 6 weeks and then his superpowers)

Ah, I must have missed that aspect of it. That definitely makes it more questionable-- but also something that the replay umps should be able to take into account during review. Or maybe they do, I don't know. But they should, for more borderline calls.

Also it's now 8-5, because Familia.

   53. Howie Menckel Posted: April 27, 2019 at 11:13 PM (#5836003)
Yonder, your point stands - he was not able to hold onto the base after he arrived safely.

probably should be like the NFL "cross the plane of the goal line" rule - doesn't matter what happens after that; the play ends at that moment.

On that d'Arnaud play in particular, it was a pretty clear over-slide (I was in the park). The ump started to punch him out, then started a "safe" motion, then really punched him out.

A swing is defined as an attempt to strike at the ball, so umpires who claim swinging strikes when batters attempt to turn away from balls they're hit by aren't adhering to the letter of a badly written rule, they're just shitty at their jobs.

Every time I watch a Red Sox game, it seems like Rafael Devers makes an error at 3B. #8 today, on what could have been a DP grounder, followed by a 2-run triple. 4-0, Rays.

Already 144 different pitchers who've appeared in MLB this season have had Tommy John surgery at some point, plus 33 more on the IL who have yet to get into a game in 2019. Means 31.7% of MLB pitchers in 2019 have had TJ surgery at some point. Crazy.

One man's "dump" is a more observant person's "spill while attempting to catch the ball in the cup."

I have great seats to a terrible Sox game. Something is so clearly wrong with Chris Sale that I think shutting him down is probably the right move. His fastball is topping out at 92, and the only pitch he had any trust in is his slider... Which had gotten crushed me than once.

I recall Ron Kittle getting a beer dumped in his face (quite intentionally) as he prepared to make a catch against the LF wall in the 1983 playoffs against the Orioles. I'm thinking it was at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, but where Chicago is involved nothing is certain.

Tatis the Junior reached high to catch a throw down to 2B, then as he came down went into a ballerina split that made me cringe as it happened. Then he rolled onto his belly while reaching back to grasp his hamstring, although it looked like his groin suffered the brunt of that stretch.

Tatis being replaced by Mejía in LF, Myers to 3B, Machado to SS. Check that, scorecard should be a mess at this point with all these changes.

When, or even if, the Yankees infielders come back healthy, I don't see how you send down Urshela. He won't continue to hit like this, but his defense is fantastic.

Yankees slugging 3rd baseman Gio Urshela HBP in left hand. Not sure he’ll stay in game after running the bases.

All the Yanks need now is for some .150 hitting Giant to line one off Germán's knee.

GARY GOES BOOM!

8-0!

[edit] I sort of hate those HRs for Gary, since I think it encourages him into "pull mode" at the plate, which is not so good ...

Oh for ####'S sake!

Booney is just about the worst manager of a bullpen I've ever seen.
