HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

MLB managed not to have a Saturday day game? Why?
   3. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 01, 2020 at 04:04 PM (#5967398)
Masahiro Tanaka makes his season debut tonight against Boston, after taking a Mike Stanton liner off the noggin during a July 4th intrasquad game. Yankees will probably need postseason Tanaka (1.76 ERA in 46 IP) at some point to make it through 4 rounds of playoffs.

#2: I don't know the original schedule but 3 regular games and a DH cancelled is gonna blow a hole in any schedule. Beyond that, blame TV.
   5. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 05:45 PM (#5967418)
Anyway, some small sample factoids, 2020 vs 2019:

233/316/398 ... 252/323/435
4.62 R/G ... 4.83 R/G
1.22 HR ... 1.39 HR pre team-game
9.1 K/9 ... 8.9 K/9

MLB managed not to have a Saturday day game? Why?
Prime time television, prime time prices for advertising.
   7. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 01, 2020 at 07:26 PM (#5967445)
Aaron Judge HRs for the 4th straight game. Will he hit 60 this season?

I think Reds-Tigers was scheduled for this afternoon but delayed and then postponed because of rain.
   9. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 07:32 PM (#5967448)
I have learned that my memory of offseason (or maybe late last season) moves has not survived the virus. Ozuna on the Braves, Wacha on the Mets.
   10. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 01, 2020 at 08:04 PM (#5967452)
I don’t think you can really tell from watching, but Tanaka is wearing a protective insert under his cap:
William Weinbaum, ESPN

The hard-shell partial cap insert Masahiro Tanaka said he'll wear Sat. night is 1 of 13 recently ordered by the Yankees (8 for righties & 5 for lefties to try out), CEO Matt Meier of manufacturer Safer Sports Technologies told ESPN Sat. Pitchers can use any protective headwear, as long as MLB doesn't deem it to interfere with competition or licensing agreements. Meier said he's aware of 10 current MLB pitchers, including Tanaka, who wear the SST insert.
Doesn't seem to be bothering him, so far.

Not baseball. Buble singing the Canadian national anthem before start of Montreal/Pittsburgh hockey playoff game. Somehow Buble made an awesome anthem seem not awesome
   12. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 01, 2020 at 08:37 PM (#5967454)
I see Zach Greinke is unblemished through 5 against Angels.
   13. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 08:37 PM (#5967455)
Isn't that a synopsis of Buble's career? The man's style virtually screams superficial patriot love.

Interesting that the Cubs don't bother with cardboard fans. Random actual person sitting in the 10th row though.
   14. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 08:43 PM (#5967456)
I'll give the Cubs an A- on that rundown.
   15. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 08:50 PM (#5967459)
Have I mentioned I love the idea of sideline reporters with no sideline to report on. (Hey, at least they still have a job.)

Sweet jinx, bro.
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 01, 2020 at 08:55 PM (#5967461)
I thought ‘unblemished’ was on the permissible euphemisms list.
   18. Jeremy Renner App is Dead and I killed it Posted: August 01, 2020 at 09:28 PM (#5967465)
NHL has done a good job with crowd noise. Pens game sounds like there is a legit crowd.

My mom, who is not a baseball fan, has asked me numerous times if the Cubs are doing the cardboard fan thing, and if so, will there be one of the green windbreaker/pink hat guy who has season tickets behind home plate and has become a source of entertainment for her when I've been visiting and have the game on.
   20. Mayor Blomberg Posted: August 01, 2020 at 09:58 PM (#5967470)
Prime time television, prime time prices for advertising.

Am I just showing age and senility by asking what about the game of the week?
   21. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 01, 2020 at 10:08 PM (#5967471)
I don't care about games this season and all that, but dang it, if the Angels lose this game, it'll really hurt.
   22. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 01, 2020 at 10:24 PM (#5967472)
Gawd freaking dammit.
   23. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 10:30 PM (#5967474)
With the shortened season, we need to get our wild opimism and our panic out of the way early. So I'll jump on the wild optimism bandwagon and give the Cubs' pitching coach the coach of the year award for ...

Tyler Chatwood, 12.2 IP, 19 K, 4 BB. He might end up losing this one (no jinx) but an amazingly efficient start. Maybe we've Darvished him.
   24. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 10:34 PM (#5967475)
And time for the 7th inning stretch ... for the rooftop fans I guess.

Y'know, the Cubs could have taken this lull to quietly kill the guest condutor thing but no ...

But walt what about the sponsership money?
   26. Howie Menckel Posted: August 01, 2020 at 10:46 PM (#5967477)
Forgettable longtime Giants SS Brandon Crawford rocked a Wild West bank robber bandana/face covering on first base just now before he got picked off to end the inning.

maybe his brain was oxygen-deprived?

Trout spawn!

EDIT: For those of you in keeper leagues ...
   28. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 01, 2020 at 11:09 PM (#5967480)
That win felt good. Really great. Even if the season is all messed up, a win still feel like they normally do. Probably better.

BB-Ref is on it.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: August 01, 2020 at 11:31 PM (#5967482)
Cub pen managed to give up only 3 in 2.1 IP to hang onto a 4-3 win.

On the year, that brings them up to 24 IP and 26 R.

With a 6-2 start, I am significantly less impressed with Zonk's GM/managerial skills.

This isn’t surprising, Mike really looked up to me and wanted to model his game after me when I was traded to the @Angels. I just pray the kid doesn’t feel too much pressure living up to my career numbers.
   32. Walt Davis Posted: August 02, 2020 at 12:54 AM (#5967486)
By the way, I meant to mention back on Day 1 ... somebody else probably did ... Mike Trout is now officially a "lock" as this is his 10th "season." (Barring doing something naughty of course.)
   33. BDC Posted: August 02, 2020 at 11:06 AM (#5967503)
Aaargh, 13 pitchers, 3-1/2 hours, Rangers lose 7-3.

Elvis Andrus scored his 883rd run, tying him for 480th all-time with Ossie Bluege and Jayson Werth. This and $4.95 will get him a small drive-thru latte, but he's in a patch of the Runs Scored leaderboard within a couple of Runs either way of Greg Luzinski, Babe Herman, Hack Wilson, and Frank Baker- big star sluggers in their day. Elvis has taken a different route to score them, but that's a lot of runs.

Every Cubs starter has an ERA+ of 109 or better, 4 of them much better. They have pitched nearly 2/3 of the team's innings. The team collectively has an ERA+ of 97.

BREAKING: The Mets don't know where Yoenis Cespedes is.

Team statement: "As of game time, Yoenis Céspedes has not reported to the ballpark today. He did not reach out to management with any explanation for his absence. Our attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful."

Things I am not a fan of so far in this season
1) The Mets bullpen
2) Pete Alonso's start at the plate
3) Piped in crowd noise

Cubs pen - 27 R in 24 IP

Mets pen - 29 R in 37 IP

Ooof, that is dreadful for the Cubs. Doesn't ease the sting much though for this Mets fan

It’s a tragedy they don’t play in the 2020 ‘regular’ season.

Ohtani with a 1-2-3 first, then walked three straight before striking out two in the second. Walked the next guy on what was clearly strike three. Working on almost 50 pitches through not quite two innings.
   44. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 02, 2020 at 04:58 PM (#5967559)
And another walk. In his second game, 50 pitches. 3Ks and 5 walks — all five in the second inning — and Ohtani is done.
   45. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 02, 2020 at 05:11 PM (#5967561)
Walked the next guy on what was clearly strike three.
Looked like a pretty good pitch. Bad call. Still, Ohtani made some progress in this outing.
   46. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 02, 2020 at 07:58 PM (#5967586)
The verdict is in - Judge HRs in 5th straight game.
   47. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 02, 2020 at 08:41 PM (#5967590)
That HR moved Judge into a tie with Curtis Granderson (115) for 36th on the Yankees Career HR list.
   48. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 02, 2020 at 09:27 PM (#5967595)
ARod: “Stats will tell you one thing. Body language will tell you more.” The body language consisting of how Gleyber Torres looked in taking a single pitch.
   49. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 02, 2020 at 10:13 PM (#5967598)
Two-run HR by Judge, his 2nd of the game, gives the Yankees a 9-7 lead, and breaks the tie with Curtis Granderson for 36th on the Yankees Career HR list. Pitching could be a bit better.
