Anyone notice how the Yankees catcher is lobbing the ball back to the pitcher? Kelenic could have taken third every time.
   4. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 07, 2021 at 03:21 PM (#6033390)
A rather rocky start for Andrew Heaney, giving up 2 runs in each of the first 2 innings, had many Yankee fans questioning his recent acquisition, but he did hold the fort thereafter, completing the 6th inning without giving up any more runs, saving a bullpen depleted by yesterday’s 9-pitcher exercise, and allowing the Yankees to make a game of it. 4-3 in bottom of 6th.

EDIT: Now 4-4 on Higashioka pinch-hit RBI double.

How do the tigers keep rolling Cabrera out there. He has a chance to really pile up some terrible numbers if they keep playing him to the end of his contract
   6. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 07, 2021 at 04:32 PM (#6033396)
Yankees just keep winning close games, this time they get the winning run when the Mariners pull a brain fart. One out in the last of the 6th, Higgy on 3rd and LeMahieu on 1st, when Rizzo hits a hard ground ball to the 1B France for what should've been an easy 1-6-3 inning ending DP. But instead France touches the bag to retire Rizzo, throws to the SS Moore to get LeMahieu, but doesn't notice Higgy coming home while LeMahieu stops running and forces a rundown. He eventually gets tagged out, but in the meantime Higgy's scored what turned out to be the winning run in a 5-4 game. Ugly win, but it leaves the Yanks only a game behind in the WC race.

Oh, Mets.
   9. Walt Davis Posted: August 07, 2021 at 06:40 PM (#6033405)
#5: First, the Tigers don't have many options anyway. Second Miggy is chasing milestones. He's on 498 HR and 2946 hits. He won't get to 3000 hits this year but he wants any he can get. And it surprisingly hasn't been that bad -- a 96 OPS+ which is lousy for a DH but hardly embarrassing overall.

Just took a look -- the guys sitting the bench for Miggy are

Harold Castre: an IF with an 89 OPS+ and a ISO of 40
Zack Short: a SS with a 67 OPS+
Victor Reyes: a OF with a 52 OPS+
Derek Hill: a OF with a 90 OPS+ and a ISO of 30
Grayson Greiner: backup C with an OPS+ of 68

And I assume Short and one of Reyes/Hill are starting every day in place of Goodrum and Mazara. So let Miggy finish off the season, get his 500 HRs. Assuming he doesn't make it to 3000 hits, he should be close enough he can get there quickly next year then maybe they will finally move on.
   10. Howie Menckel Posted: August 07, 2021 at 07:57 PM (#6033409)
Mets starting pitchers are 4-19 in their last 51 games, which seems suboptimal.

today's twist of the knife: down 5-0 after 8 innings, only two hits all day.

then, HR HR HR 1B and a one-out walk to bring up lummoxes Alonso and JD Davis - who promptly swing and miss at 6 straight high fastballs and it's ballgame over.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: August 07, 2021 at 08:02 PM (#6033412)
Molina is still batting ahead of Bader, and yet he manages to drive in two runs...
   12. tonywagner Posted: August 07, 2021 at 08:05 PM (#6033413)
Since June 1st, Miguel Cabrera has a 118 wRC+.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: August 07, 2021 at 08:41 PM (#6033416)
Shildt is just horrible manager... pulling Kim in the fourth, simply because of potential offense situation.

Cardinals do not deserve to win a game with Shildt as manager ever again.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: August 07, 2021 at 08:42 PM (#6033417)
Of course Carpenter proves me wrong with a double to give the team a lead....
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: August 07, 2021 at 08:46 PM (#6033418)
Mind you, the Cardinals still ###### it up... first and third one out... fourth inning tied game, pull the pitcher who has been quite good and just had a couple of bad pitches in the previous inning for a pinch hitter, pinch hitter hits a double to the wall, man on third scored (which would have happened more than likely if you keep the pitcher in and sacrifice bunt) man on first tries to score and does the anti-baez and slides poorly on a play in which he beat the throw, and is called out... now the pen is going to be asked to go 5 innings, in a week in which they have shown a complete inability to stop runs.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: August 07, 2021 at 09:27 PM (#6033422)
If I heard the announcers right, Arenado has had five at bats with the bases loaded as a Cardinal and is not only 0-5, but has 5 strikeouts.

Edit: looking at splits and that isn't the case, but he did just strikeout.
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 07, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6033423)
Trading Scherzer, and especially Turner, understandably wasn’t that popular among Nationals fans, but based on early indications, it looks like at least one of the players received in return may pan out. Josiah Gray followed up his initial 4-hit, 1-earned run, 5-inning start, with another 5-inning, 1 earned run start tonight, this time striking out 10. Still early, but potentially promising.
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: August 07, 2021 at 10:03 PM (#6033424)
I have noted that it seems like the best pair of studs ever dealt in the same deal at the deadline - and, possibly, the best pair of prospects sent off in return.
   19. Hombre Brotani Posted: August 07, 2021 at 10:06 PM (#6033425)
This has not been Max Muncy's best weekend.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: August 07, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6033426)
two wins in a row... yea.... .500
   21. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 07, 2021 at 10:37 PM (#6033428)
Another player added at the trade deadline comes through for the Nationals. Catcher Riley Adams (obtained from Toronto for Brad Hand) got his first hit, a 2-run HR in the Nationals 3-run 9th, as Washington rallied past Atlanta 3-2.
   22. JJ1986 Posted: August 08, 2021 at 01:30 PM (#6033448)
The Mets are a bad joke at this point.
   23. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 08, 2021 at 03:26 PM (#6033453)
Luis Gil goes 5 scoreless innings against the Mariners, and becomes only the 2nd Yankee starter to not give up a run in his first two starts, matching Andy’s boyhood idol, Slow Joe Doyle, who accomplished the task in 1906 with two complete-game shutouts, back when men were men. Still scoreless in the 6th.
   24. Howie Menckel Posted: August 08, 2021 at 03:28 PM (#6033454)
if you squint, you can see a tiny hint of despair within Mets Nation:

Jim Hague
Well, it sure looks as if the Phils are going to sweep the Mets this weekend, quite possibly into oblivion. So is it only fitting that it's Zack Wheeler, the last big mistake made by Wilpon when they let him walk, has broken the fungo bat in half and shoved it up the Mets' rectum
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2021 at 06:18 PM (#6033469)
5-5 in the top of the 9th, rain delay, Cardinals have 9 hits, 2 extra base hits, Lester has one of those two.
   26. AndrewJ Posted: August 08, 2021 at 06:55 PM (#6033474)
Zack Wheeler becoming a Cy Young dark horse...
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2021 at 07:57 PM (#6033484)
2nd and 3rd no outs in a tied game 9th inning, is a very scary proposition, the game has started back up. (home from work, so the 9th inning is the only inning I get to see)

Ground ball to the shortstop, who was playing in, throw to the plate, the catcher has to jump to catch the ball, and fortunately it was a normal human sliding and not Baez as the catcher was able to bop him on the helmet for the out.

next batter singles to make it 6-5. still two on one out, top of the ninth. (errors caused this situation though)
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2021 at 08:05 PM (#6033485)
first pitch, called strike 2 inches outside... love the human element.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2021 at 08:06 PM (#6033486)
Cardinal batter called out on strikes, in which 1 out of 5 pitches was an actual strike. (mind you, he never swung so maybe it's the ump telling him to man up and swing at the close pitches... even though they weren't that close)
   30. dejarouehg Posted: August 08, 2021 at 08:26 PM (#6033488)
Did the Yankees game end yet? That game was begging for a pitch clock.
   31. The Honorable Ardo Posted: August 08, 2021 at 09:11 PM (#6033489)
And I assume Short and one of Reyes/Hill are starting every day in place of Goodrum and Mazara.
Short is playing SS nearly every day b/c he's the only option Hinch (or myself) trusts defensively, but he can't hit at all. Hill hit his first career home run today and plays solid-not-great CF defense; the best case scenario for him is Rajai Davis's career.

2-0. 27k's, took 3:48 --- baseball in 2021; gotta love it!

Only thing positive from that game is that NY lost.
   33. Howie Menckel Posted: August 08, 2021 at 10:38 PM (#6033491)
the other NY game no doubt was more than an hour shorter, at 3-0 and all on solo HR
