HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 08, 2020 at 03:44 PM (#5968496)
Gerrit Cole at 8 K’s thru 4 innings, as the Yankees lead the Rays 4-0 in the 1st game of today’s doubleheader.

EDIT: Stanton solo shot makes it 5-0.

I'm amazed the Angels lost yesterday, they were up 3-1 when I went to sleep :)

Weird week for the Rangers. They lost two games in a row in Oakland by identical scores, which was very confusing to me. I kept toggling between the two days and concluded I was suffering from déjà vu.
   4. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 08, 2020 at 04:23 PM (#5968506)
ALL RISE! Judge hits HR #8, a 2-run shot, to make it 7-3 Yankees in the 6th. A 3-for-4 day for Judge, so far.

If we're going to have to deal with the ignominy of 7 inning games, could they at least not be 3 hours?
   6. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 08, 2020 at 05:48 PM (#5968523)
A tidy 2 hours & 52 minutes for Game 1. Bullpen game for both Yankees & Rays in Game 2.
   7. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 08, 2020 at 05:53 PM (#5968525)
The Yankees called up veteran backstop Eric Kratz today after Kyle Higashioka suffered an oblique strain, and he’s catching the nightcap. Maybe it would have been different if Chris Iannetta hadn’t balked at going to Scranton and retired.
   8. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 08, 2020 at 07:39 PM (#5968540)
Jake Arrieta having a throwback start through 4, anyway. He’s looked sharp tonight.

Having a friendly ump helps.
   9. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 08, 2020 at 07:51 PM (#5968543)
Mike Ford pinch hitting for Giancarlo Stanton in the 6th inning. Must be an injury, but didn’t see it.
   10. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 08, 2020 at 07:58 PM (#5968546)
This Erik Kratz’s 11th season — his service time is a hair greater than 5 years.
   11. Walt Davis Posted: August 08, 2020 at 09:09 PM (#5968557)
Entering Sat, the Dodgers have a team ERA+ of 176, giving up under 3 runs, 7 hits per game. That's a line of 200/276/312 with a 248 BABIP.
   12. puck Posted: August 08, 2020 at 09:37 PM (#5968558)
Rockies starting pitcher is making his MLB debut in Seattle tonight, Ryan Castellani.

Just hung an off speed pitch but got away with a deep fly ball. Two scoreless. I'm worried about the 2nd time through the order.
   13. phredbird Posted: August 08, 2020 at 09:55 PM (#5968561)

thanks to COVID, i can't watch the cardinals.

thanks to MLBs stupid blackout rules, i can't watch the dodgers.

i am reduced to watching the padres.

but i have to say this guy paddack is looking like a real major league pitcher ...
   14. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 08, 2020 at 10:51 PM (#5968565)
Castellani's night is over, not having surrendered a hit. I'll take it.
   15. phredbird Posted: August 08, 2020 at 10:52 PM (#5968566)

woops, i guess i should have kept quiet. paddack pulled in the sixth after giving up two taters.

pods having trouble scoring runs tonight.

   22. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 08, 2020 at 11:11 PM (#5968575)
Rockies' combined no-hitter is broken up with two outs in the sixth. Which is just as well, because combined no-hitters aren't very interesting.
   23. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: August 08, 2020 at 11:16 PM (#5968577)
Trump just signed a bill, banning combined no-hitters.

finally that idiot gets something right.

The Giants broadcasters are totally unique too!

Cards-Pirates Monday cancelled (per Jeff Passan)
   26. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 09, 2020 at 12:33 AM (#5968583)
Following up on #9, Stanton scheduled for hamstring MRI, IL probable.
   27. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 09, 2020 at 11:30 AM (#5968594)
The Colorado Rockies wake up this morning with the best record in baseball. The strength of the team has been the starting rotation; all five current starters have an ERA+ of at least 150.

After getting three more hits last night, Charlie Blackmon is hitting .446/..475/.659. He's 24 for his last 44.
   28. puck Posted: August 09, 2020 at 11:50 AM (#5968595)
There were those articles about some change to the training regimen when they hit the road, something Blackmon started in the second half last year. Wonder if there is anything to it? 10 hits, 3 HR, 8 runs in the first game of the road trip was interesting.

I'm not confident about them holding off the Dodgers w/all the holes in the lineup but in a 60 game (or less) season with expanded playoffs, 11-3 is a great start.

Something is wrong with Jake deGrom.
   31. Howie Menckel Posted: August 09, 2020 at 02:10 PM (#5968622)
announcers said it was an issue with his middle finger - blister, maybe - so he is very limited in his pitch selections.

32-pitch second inning. Villar, that knucklehead, tried to bunt with the bases loaded and 2 out, lol

deGrom leads 1-0 in the 3rd, lowering his MLB all-time low daytime baseball record of 1.81 ERA entering the game. Cicotte the Black Sock is second at 2.20.

Marlins got off to this 7-2 start using 9 different SPs. the rotation has come around, and Pablo Lopez is getting a second start today.
   32. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 09, 2020 at 02:12 PM (#5968623)
The Rays Charlie Morton left with some sort of injury after walking Aaron Hicks leading off the top of the 3rd. Lots of injuries to pitchers this season.
   33. Rally Posted: August 09, 2020 at 02:14 PM (#5968624)
Not watching it, but Jake has 3 scoreless innings, topping out at 100 on the FB and 94 on the slider per Gameday.

Something off because he only has 3 K so far?
   34. Mayor Blomberg Posted: August 09, 2020 at 02:19 PM (#5968625)
maybe the back-to-back 4 pitch walks?
   35. Rally Posted: August 09, 2020 at 02:35 PM (#5968628)
Maybe that’s it. He recovered from that though.

Strasburg topped out at 93, knocked out of the 5th inning after giving up 5 to the Orioles.
   36. Howie Menckel Posted: August 09, 2020 at 03:05 PM (#5968635)
deGrom has a 2.05 ERA in 67 starts entering today, 2018-20.

Mets are 30-37 in those starts.

worst W-L pct of a team with an SP with back-to-back Cy Youngs is .438, Mets.

next worst is Giants with Lincecum - at .615.
   37. Mayor Blomberg Posted: August 09, 2020 at 03:31 PM (#5968639)
Paxton fell apart quicky. 6 innings 1 hit, then double, pop out, HR, HR. 3-3 game and he's gone.
   38. puck Posted: August 09, 2020 at 04:01 PM (#5968641)
Sure, why not? #2020

2020, the year of interpolation.
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: August 09, 2020 at 04:12 PM (#5968644)
deGrom has some blister issues, so he leaves up 3-2 after 5 IP.

Hughes a boring, scoreless 6th. a few more of these and he'll a fan favorite.

Betances a scoreless 7th but he topped out at 92 mph. ruh roh.

EDiaz for the 8th at 4-2. filthy slider was back, and FB with movement. K, K, 1-2 count and he paints the black against a hapless Lavaranway. snoozing ump calls it a ball, and 'varney' excuse mes an opposite field single.

then some new little kid is up, and he somehow goes oppo for a double well up the LF wall. Lavarnway turtles his way to 3rd with 2 outs, lol. then Monte Harrison - not yet MLB-ready - completes his platinum sombrero: 4 AB, 4 K, all swinging, all on fastballs.

Lugo to get the 9th and it's over, 4-2

Mets won and Yankees lost within fewer than 5 seconds of each other
   40. Rally Posted: August 09, 2020 at 04:36 PM (#5968645)
I remember when Lavarnway was a top Red Sox prospect. Had a close view of the infamous game 162 of 2011, he was the starting catcher. He impressed me as being noticeably slower than David Ortiz at the time. Probably hasn’t gotten any faster since then.

Best thing about no fans is that teams don't feel the need to play GBA at the 7th inning stretch. Really hoping once fans return no teams reinstate this practice and this just dies quietly.

apparently an A's-Astros brawl today?

this is from a Bay Area media guy.....

Alex Pavlovic
@PavlovicNBCS
The tough guy on Astros bench deserves 10 games for telling Laureano to come at him and 40 for hiding behind everyone else when he did.

It is Alex Cintron and I 100% believe whatever Laureano gets, Cintrons needs to match
   44. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 09, 2020 at 09:04 PM (#5968695)
Cintron is the Astros hitting coach. Coaches should be held to a higher standard than players, IMHO, and Cintron’s instigating/taunting warrants a suspension equal or greater to that given to those ineffectually attempting to throw punches in a typical baseball ‘brawl’. Laureano was HBP twice in the game & 3 times in the series, so it’s not surprising he was a bit steamed, but it looked like nothing was going to happen until Cintron escalated matters.

The mask in the dugout requirement has made no impression whatsoever on the White Sox.
