HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN, OR MAYBE NOT, TODAY?!

I haven't been following the all star game (or baseball in general) too closely the past 18 months, but Molina was added to the all star roster, and they mention he was voted by the players... I don't understand?

I thought the way the voting worked was that there was a fan vote that got the starting players, then the players vote gave the seconds a spot, then the manager got to add whatever open spots. My issue with the players vote was in the past that if the player vote won the fan vote, then the second best player vote would go in, which was a bit of a waste to be honest, if the players and the fans agree, then leave that spot for the manager. So I'm not sure how Molina is the fan vote, but wasn't on the roster to begin with (same with Anderson and Merrifield)

The Pirates start Adam Frazier, who's starting in the ASG; Ke'Bryan Hayes who is a top prospect; Bryan Reynolds who has been very good for a few years; and then 5 random dudes who I recognize as players but could not have told you what team they were on. Former Nats reserve infielder Wilmer Difo starts in RF.

ex-Cardinals PH John "Big" Nogowski is now 11 for 18 for the Pirates after a 2-run single in the 4th inning give the Buccos a 2-1 lead.

Mets are playing their 10th doubleheader of the young season, the most by any team before the All-Star Break since the 1978 Blue Jays.

Ronald Acuña Jr. was carted off the field after he landed awkwardly on his right leg trying to make a catch on the warning track.

ALL RISE! Aaron Judge’s 3rd inning HR (#21), his 1st hit off Zack Greinke, gives the Yankees a 1-0 lead in Houston. It’s also Judge’s 140th HR, which ties Tom Tresh and Hideki Matsui for 32nd on the Yankees Career HR list.

Aramis Ramirez vs Adam Wainwright: 359/406/625 with 3 HR

Others: Votto 322/412/627 in one fewer PA. Heyward 333/366/538. And it's only 10 PAs but of all people, Keon Broxton at 778/800/1889 (2 doubles, a triple, 2 HR). And oof, 35 PA, James Loney at 529/543/765.
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: July 10, 2021 at 08:33 PM (#6028525)
what a dumbass play by the cubs... man on second, two outs, pitcher up to bat, swinging bunt, to the second baseman, he has trouble gripping the ball, but eventually gets a grip on the ball and instead of taking the easy out at first, throws behind the runner who went to third.
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: July 10, 2021 at 09:19 PM (#6028527)
Cardinals with 3 hr's to make the game a serious number 6-0 right now, but with the Cardinals middle relief, this game is far from over... 6-4 in the 7th and I would feel safe as a Cardinal fan, 6-0 in the fifth, and this game is not even remotely over. Cardinal pitching from the 4th to 7th has to be among the worse in baseball when it comes to relief usage. (or Non-Wainwright starters)
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: July 10, 2021 at 09:26 PM (#6028528)
Just looking at the Cardinals war as a team, and I'm sorry, I like war and all, but there is no way Reyes has been more valuable than Adam Wainwright.

and instead of taking the easy out at first, throws behind the runner who went to third.

Kim was busting his ass down the line, Hoerner wouldn't have gotten him at first---that's why he then turned his attention to the runner at third.
   12. salvomania Posted: July 10, 2021 at 10:16 PM (#6028537)
Gerritt Cole talks his way into staying in the game with 2 outs in the 9th and up 1-0, at 126 pitches...

EDIT: And he fans Yordan Alvarez on three pitches with the tying run on 1st to complete the shutout, 129 pitches.
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 10, 2021 at 10:20 PM (#6028538)
A tidy 129 pitch, complete game 1-0 shutout for Gerrit Cole. It’s 1968 deja vu all over again.
   14. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 10, 2021 at 10:25 PM (#6028539)
I've defended Boone all year, but I would've put a contract on him if he'd taken out Cole in the 9th.

BTW Alvarez had homered twice off Cole in May, so this made that final strikeout particularly dramatic.
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: July 10, 2021 at 10:38 PM (#6028541)
that bottom of the 9th - as Cole throws the most MLB pitches in one game since 2019 - will go down as one of the top 10 half-innings of the season. and it won't rank 10th.

Altuve to lead off the 9th, and if they bring in Chapman and the Terror Tot homers, Chapman might as well take off his uniform on the mound, walk into the clubhouse, get dressed, and retire. Yankees didn't want to take that risk, lol.

I think the Yankees are already dead, even moreso if they can't use Chapman anymore. so I'd have sent him out there and prayed for a miracle.

BUT it was very cool to see Cole out there like a 1970s workhorse. 112 pitches to start the 9th, allows a leadoff single, and it's still his game. then as noted, Boone's plan was to have Chapman get Alvarez to end the game. Cole wasn't having it.

my personal ultimate compliment for a ballgame is when I am a few minutes behind on the DVR - and I don't touch that dial the whole half-inning. it was so gripping that the minor delays between pitches helped to wrap your mind around what one you're seeing.

The K on Gurriel was terrible, though---HP ump calls a checked-swing strike three, and it was clear in real time, and the replay, that he didn't go around. Gurriel was complaining, rightfully, that it wasn't the HP ump's call to make.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: July 10, 2021 at 11:16 PM (#6028545)
yes, that is true.

it's interesting that the better the ump, the more likely they seem to be to check with the first-base umpire.

the a-holes who believe they are the "right ones" - yeah, they tend to be wrong pretty often.

Yeah, that call was a complete joke, but then home plate umpires are so bad in giving gift strikes to pitchers on low and outside pitches that this one differed only in its blatancy.

And considering the 1-0 score, the caliber of the opposition,** and the desperate status of both the Yankees' bullpen*** and the Yankees' precarious position in the standings, I'd argue that in context Cole may have pitched the best MLB game of the year. His Game Score was 91, not the highest of 2021, but none that were higher were 1-0 games.

** The Astros lead MLB in both runs scored and OPS+.

*** Their only two reliable late inning relievers (Green and Loaisiga) weren't available.

Acuña undergoing surgery for a complete ACL tear - out for the season. 9-10 months recovery time. Big loss, to say the least.

Atlanta sport is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

Get well soon, Ronald.

I've never seen Ohtani complain to an umpire before, but Strike Three in his third AB was more than two baseballs outside. He grimaced, and shook his head and his hand at the umpire. That's the extent of his fury.

It's 1-0 Mariners in the middle of the 6th. The game's moving pretty well, in part because the strike zone is the size of the zip code.

Looks like "the rotting corpse of Gerritt Cole" stopped rotting, at least for now.

Rockies All-Star German Marquez threw seven shutout innings at the Padres tonight. He's now given up three runs in his last 36 innings.

Albert Pujols can still hit a 60 MPH ‘fastball’, at least off a position player. Dodgers nursing a 22-1 lead over Diamondbacks.

re: 18-- Yes, a game score of 91, in a 1-0 game, against a Great opponent, is fantastic.

But if the ump (as was said above) was giving both pitchers a bunch of gift strikes, and that KO of Gurriel was horrible, then I sure ain't gonna agree it was the best pitching game of 2021....
   28. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 11, 2021 at 03:50 PM (#6028600)
Stanton on 2nd when Gleyber Torres hits a line drive that sends him sprawling awkwardly, although he still scores (despite his noticeably reduced speed these days) because the ball is so hard hit that it is deep in left center when retrieved. 3-1 Yankees.

Actually last night's home plate umpire was better than most of the many I've seen over the past few years.** But that checked swing "strike" was about as bad as it gets.

** Note that in my comment above I wasn't specifically referring to any particular umpire.

The Angels absolutely smoked three balls, and they were all right at someone, an easy 1-2-3 in the box score. It's been that kind of weekend.

Starter Aaron Nola and 2 relievers were unavailable.

Gary Sanchez’s 3-run HR stretches the Yankees lead to 7-2 in the 8th @ Houston. Might be enough.

It's impressive that the Yankees didn't even use Aroldis Chapman, yet still managed to cough up a five-run ninth-inning lead.

David Fletcher has 3 hits and 4 RBIs today. His hit streak is up to 24.

David Fletcher has a 4-hit game for the second time this week. He's got 16 hits in 6 games this week, 16-27, .593 for the week.

Heck, the way the Astros have been hitting I thought it was over at 4-2. Baseball never ceases to surprise.

Did not expect that. I looked at the box score after the 8th, saw they had a one run lead. Danger Ranger had already gotten 4 outs. All they had left in the pen were starters, and a few guys just up from the minors. Red Sox had their best 3 hitters coming up. Nice save that Goose Gossage would be proud of.

[matt Gelb of the athletic] reports the Phillies won’t say how many players are unvaccinated, but that it’s “a meaningful number, to the point that months ago, the Phillies were certain they would never reach the 85 percent threshold.” He also writes the holdouts’ vaccine opposition is “driven by a handful of influential players who have voiced opposition to it,” and provides some examples of anti-vaccine talking points that are almost jaw-dropping in how nonsensical they sound. Pitcher Brandon Kintzler had neck pain during an outing and decided it was thanks to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, not, you know, to pitching. Pitcher Archie Bradley “alluded to” the vaccine, rather than, uh, pitching, causing oblique issues. Shortstop Didi Gregorious blamed the vaccine for an elbow problem. The report says team doctors have tried to “dispel” these notions, but in their defense, the players don’t seem especially movable. “There has to be some science behind it,” Kintzler said of the vaccine preceding several Phillies suffering baseball injuries. Manager Joe Girardi sounds like a guy who has given up, saying the club is “beyond” peer pressure.
