I guess it makes some sense if they no longer expect to make the playoffs. Have they extended him beyond this year, too?

about all he can do in LA is backup at 1B and RH bat off the bench.

the rumors were that he wanted to play every day somewhere. maybe his agent finally talked some sense to him, because this doesn't seem like a terrible fit.

It's hard to see how often Pujols plays with the Dodgers, but he's also a dude with five kids, and uprooting for just a few months for the last year of his career probably doesn't sound awesome to his family.

yeah, but ...

pujols has always struck me as a bit of an over proud, even macho guy. i think he probably feels justified trying to finish on an up note, going to an almost assured playoff team, and the family is just going to have to go along. L.A. is just down the road for gosh sakes.

as for the dodgers, there's no real downside. the angels are paying for the cake, people are going to buy tickets to see him, he's going to get a lot of rest, and so he can probably be as good a bat off the bench or spotting bellinger as any other slightly better than replacement player out there.

the cardinals kept mark reynolds around in 2015 when we won 100 games.

he hit 13 HR and slashed 230/315/398 ... is that something pujols could do?

Pujols to the Dodgers strikes me as a bit odd. I can see the short-term need -- Lux is struggling, Taylor is in CF due to injury, a couple of other bench players are hurt. So Pujols at 1B occasionally pushes Muncy to 2B and Lux to the bench. But once Bellinger is back, he goes into CF, Taylor to 2B, Muncy back to 1B and Pujols to the bench (or released). But Pujols isn't the kind of guy you sign because you need to plug a gap for a couple of weeks and Pujols isn't the kind of guy who's gonna agree to that. And of course Pujols just can't hit anymore so why would you want to make him part of a regular rotation?

I assume this means the Cards weren't interested.

as for the dodgers, there's no real downside


I feel like this deserves it's own thread (and I submitted one, but it hasn't been approved yet). But anyway, the downside is that he sucks and takes time away from guys who would play better. There's only 26 spots on the roster. A roster spot is a high cost for a guy that hasn't hit well since 2016, can't run and can only play first base or pinch hit.

Orioles starter Jorge Lopez is at 73 pitches after two innings, The Orioles were contemplating going with a bullpen game tomorrow - that may be difficult without some roster moves. Lopez has a 98 MPH fastball, but little control, at least tonight.

14, he can't play every day. everybody knows that.

that's not the same thing as saying he can't contribute as a sub or bench bat. sure, this looks dumb if we all assume he would only agree to go somewhere he can play regularly. do you think the dodgers would agree to that? really?

did you see the line i put up about mark reynolds? the ghost of albert pujols is almost as good as mark reynolds.

meanwhile, this is a business too. lots of people will still pay hoping to see albert pujols hit a double or a home run subbing for cody bellinger when he strains his shoulder again. not that its a lock or anything, but albert with some rest i think can play a serviceable first base once in a while.

finally ... if in fact he really is completely and utterly toast, the dodgers can just release him. it's only may, there's time to find out.

I could see this motivating some teams but the Dodgers draw plenty on their own excellence. Doubt Pujols moves the needle at all

As of right now, this home plate ump is really on it, there have been a few pitches that Waino/Molina would have gotten in the past, due to factors, but this ump is calling a solid accurate strike zone.

Again talking about the announcers, one guy says something and it is a perfect opportunity to lead into a story(talking about how Molina took over the world baseball classic)... and instead the corporate feed forces a tired montage of Wainwright/Molina moments, that was clearly pre-scripted before the game.

don't entirely agree. i went to lots of dodger games back in the day. LA is a tourist town, and they draw lots of out of town visitors who want to see their home team. when the mets were in town, it sounded like a home game for the mets. when the cards were in town, whole rows would be red, filled with missourians on a group package going to universal studios the next day.

they draw because they work on it.

The Dodgers are the only team that outdraws the Cardinals year in year out, have the longest streak of 3 million tickets, they have zero reason to add a guy for publicity. They are adding him because he costs nothing and works short term for them.

Nobody thinks he's going to be on their post season roster or even on their August roster, you sign and drop him based upon need, if you need him for 4 weeks, why wouldn't you sign him to a league minimum contract? Unless he fully resurrects himself, there is no chance he's a Dodger in July even.

The last four or five years I’ve gone to a game or two a year when visiting friends and family and at this point—not in past—I would guess dodgers rival the cardinals for super engaged crowds. I’ve been to Yankees and others and always heard overwhelming dodgers cheering these last few years.

This is reminiscent of when a certain poster here claimed that Magic Johnson bought 3% of the Dodgers so that he would become a household name.

The Dodgers signed Pujols to pinch hit against LH pitching a couple times a week. He hasn’t sold any tickets in years.

The really interesting story is Minasian insisting that Pujols was let go because he wouldn’t go to part time. Clearly that isn’t true. Albert never confirmed it and frankly the angels haven’t been playing him full time for a couple of years. So, what was the DFA really about? Minasian’s ego most likely.

[45] Yes, Lux has been the one playing there whenever Seager has gotten time off. Taylor can also handle short, but when they’ve both been on the infield it’s been Lux at short and Taylor at second.

HRs by Gary Sanchez, Clint Frazier & Aaron Judge give the Yankees a 5-2 lead over the Orioles in 3rd. That’s Judge’s 12th HR, tying him for the MLB lead. Judge is now hitting .300/.397/.615, for a 1.013 OPS, and showing signs of heating up a bit.

After multiple posts when the NYY team was doing well, Yankee Clapper went real silent as the last=-place and preseason-predicted sucky BALTIMORE ORIOLES staged an amazing epic comeback to stun Yankee fans, sending the Yankees down into a virtual tie for third place in the East. And the Yanks have already played the O's 10 games, so the easiest part of their schedule is mostly behind them. The Yankees vaunted offense is now 22nd in MLB out of 30 teams.
