HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!

Covid continues to rip through cardinals clubhouse - wainwright becomes #6 today. They need to stop testing - the whole thing is silly now. If you randomly tested 100 people on this board at any given time there's probably 10 of us who have covid but don't know it
   3. salvomania Posted: May 06, 2022 at 06:21 PM (#6075583)
Looks like 5 of tonight's games have already been postponed due to weather.
   4. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2022 at 06:30 PM (#6075586)
How many pitchers will the Giants use tonight? Each of them should be good to go for another inning tonight and then once more for the series finale.
   5. Howie Menckel Posted: May 06, 2022 at 07:10 PM (#6075591)
six games now PPD
   6. salvomania Posted: May 06, 2022 at 07:15 PM (#6075593)
Makes me want to go and check the US weather map.

No ####### thank you to that.

Willie Mays is 91 today - and disappointed he didn't get a "Say Hey" in today's thread title (we told Willie it's just because his birthday in on a Friday; he seemed to understand).

mlb.com notes that Willie is the only player to have hit 50 homers in one season and 20 triples in another.

NL MVP votes every year from 1954-66 - two wins, six top 3s, 12 top 6s. that's the most years in a row with votes - and the most in a career with votes. 7.0 bWAR minimum in all 13 years.

12 Gold Gloves still the most for a CF.

.859 career OPS against the 14 HOF pitchers he faced - including .967 vs his two most common foes, Spahn and Drysdale.

Mays is the only .300 AVG, 3,000 H, 300 HR, 300 SB guy.

Mays would be the all-time bWAR leader (ahead of Ruth and Bonds) if he didn't miss most of 1952 and all of 1953 in the military.

He had a .302 career average with 335 homers while playing at home, and a .301 career mark with 325 home runs on the road.

A .966 career OPS in high-leverage situations ranks fifth all time, behind only Jimmie Foxx, Barry Bonds, Stan Musial, and Henry Aaron.

I enjoy seeing the retro mid-'70s Braves' uniforms.
   10. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2022 at 08:52 PM (#6075605)
Mays was great right until the end. 6 WAR season at 41. Pretty amazing
   11. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2022 at 09:49 PM (#6075612)
Mike Trout is now hitting 7-7 when he starts an AB 1-0.
   12. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2022 at 10:50 PM (#6075617)
Cardinals tv announcers doing a five minute review of Willie Mays career. Quite extensive. Said he missed 270 games due to military service
   13. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 06, 2022 at 11:08 PM (#6075619)
Trout's little slump is very over. Single in the first, and a bases-loaded double in the 5th. 3-0 Angels.
   14. Walt Davis Posted: May 06, 2022 at 11:23 PM (#6075621)
That was an odd misplay by the Cards. Pop to short CF, Bader racing in, DeJong going out. Bader seems to call him off, DeJong peels off ... ball lands about 10 feet behind Bader. On replay, what looked like a call off in real time was a "I don't see it anymore." Still, it looked like DeJong thought the ball was gonna land about the same spot where Bader was ... DeJong didn't keep going after the ball or anything, seemed like he was waiting for the call off even though he too was 10 feet shy of the ball. Maybe he lost it too and was just drifting back to not look stupid. (I'm not sure DeJong could have gotten to it anyway so maybe he was just giving up on the ball.)

EDIT: To describe that better -- it's not that unusual to see two guys converge on a fly ball, get confused over which one is going to catch it and it falls between them. This one looked like two guys converge on a flyball, get confused over which one is going to catch it ... and it lands 10 feet away.
   15. The Duke Posted: May 06, 2022 at 11:38 PM (#6075625)
Yeah they both converged on a spot 10 feet in front of where ball landed. Very weird. Ghost of candlestick !!
   16. Roger Cedeno's Spleen Posted: May 06, 2022 at 11:49 PM (#6075629)
Willie Mays is 91 today.

Also José Altuve's birthday. That's the start of a monstrous Birthday Team. If those still existed...
   17. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 07, 2022 at 12:11 AM (#6075631)
The Angels win! A second combined shutout in a row. Both the rotation and bullpen have been a revelation so far.
   18. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 12:29 AM (#6075632)
D-backs almost went too far with their starter 8 2/3 but left bases jammed for melancon who got the final out. D-backs the most Suprising team of year to me. Awesome staff and a decent offense
   19. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 01:04 AM (#6075634)
Helsley with 20Ks in 10.0 innings. That's pretty good isn't it. Oh, and 0 walks.

Has anyone ever done something like that ?
   20. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 01:14 AM (#6075636)
Cards win and a giants continue their tailspin. Some great defense in the 9th pulls one out for Redbirds
   21. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 07, 2022 at 01:14 AM (#6075637)
NL MVP votes every year from 1954-66 - two wins, six top 3s, 12 top 6s. that's the most years in a row with votes

Henry Aaron got votes every year from 1955 to 1973. Yogi Berra got votes every year from 1947 to 1961. Stan Musial got votes every year from 1946 to 1958, and every year from 1942 to 1958, except for 1945 when he was in the service.
   22. stanmvp48 Posted: May 07, 2022 at 09:43 AM (#6075644)
Always thought Mays should have won it in 64.
   23. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 12:19 PM (#6075652)
More on Helsley: faced 31 batters, 20 Ks, no walks, 1 hit and no runs. He's done this on 137 pitches which means he's been pretty efficient. Not a lot of foul balls, balls. That's 4.5 pitches per batter.
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 07, 2022 at 12:36 PM (#6075655)
Off Day, Rain Out, Rain Out - not good, where’s my baseball fix? Doubleheader for Yankees Sunday & afternoon make-up game Monday.
   25. salvomania Posted: May 07, 2022 at 04:06 PM (#6075665)
After 45 strikeouts, Gausman walks his first batter of the year.
   26. Walt Davis Posted: May 07, 2022 at 04:06 PM (#6075666)
4.5 pitches/PA is the opposite of efficient given a league average of 3.9 p/PA.

EDIT: It is a FIP of -0.92 so the young man can be as inefficient as he wants.
   27. Walt Davis Posted: May 07, 2022 at 04:19 PM (#6075667)
Who cares but for curiosity's sake

among "qualifiers" to date, Woodruff (Mil) has the highest p/PA at 4.45, followed by Peralta (also Milw) at 4.40; another Brewer is at #11. Cole and Scherzer are both at 4.04; the lowest among 132 qualifiers is German Marquez at 3.33. A Marquez-Wheeler (3.45) matchup will flip through the lineups relatively quickly.

Among pitchers with at least 10 IP, Tanner Banks of the White Sox leads at 4.73; most efficient we'll give to Tim Mayza of Toronto at 3.08 although he's only got 9.2 IP.
   28. Howie Menckel Posted: May 07, 2022 at 04:24 PM (#6075668)
So a 6th-grade Pop Warner football team in an Austin, Texas suburb once had a quality QB/WR combination.

The QB - who went on to play at the same high school that produced Baker Mayfield - was Brett Baty, a 2018 first-round 3B pick by the Mets. The WR was Garrett Wilson, a 2022 first-round WR pick by the Jets.

In separate interviews, Wilson said Baty could have been an NFL QB and Baty said that Wilson could have played in the NBA. Still, they turned out pretty well (Baty is raking in AA and is expected to be promoted to the Mets within the next 12 months or so).
   29. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 04:26 PM (#6075669)
It's pretty efficient when you are striking everyone out.
   30. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 07, 2022 at 04:27 PM (#6075670)
Has anyone ever investigated whether there’s any evidence that “pressing” is actually a thing and not just ex post facto narrative?

Today is Bartolo Colon day. One of baseballs greatest moments

The Reds appear to have won today, 9-2 over the Pirates, ending a 9-game losing streak. Can anyone verify that, since it seems about equally likely that someone doing data entry inadvertently transposed the results?
   33. Walt Davis Posted: May 07, 2022 at 05:34 PM (#6075690)
It's pretty efficient when you are striking everyone out.

Present data. Compare his p/PA to other high-K pitchers. What's his first-strike %age? Foul ball %age.

You've made two claims, you provided support for neither. The initial claim is clearly wrong. You are now going for "among inefficient pitchers, he is efficient" which might actually be true but it's your claim, it's your responsibility to back it up.
   34. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 07, 2022 at 06:00 PM (#6075695)
...but it's your claim, it's your responsibility to back it up.
Are you unfamiliar with his oeuvre?
   35. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 06:07 PM (#6075696)
I'm sorry - I'm a cardinals fan. We're used to isringhaisen and rosenthal and Reyes closing games. It's an amazing thing that he doesnt run 3-2 counts and have four foul balls on every batter.

Pirates had one catcher ejected, and the other injured. With Josh VanMeter serving as emergency catcher, the Reds pushed across seven in the eighth to win.
   37. Howie Menckel Posted: May 07, 2022 at 08:02 PM (#6075703)
05.07... Red Sox signed RHP Carlos Martinez to a minor league contract.
Spin: Martinez signed a minor league deal with the Giants in March but did not pitch in a game before he was released on April 28. The 30-year-old right-hander showed potential during his nine years with the Cardinals but was released after a torn thumb ligament ended his season last year.
   38. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 07, 2022 at 09:25 PM (#6075711)
1st inning Josh Bell HR gives the Nationals a 1-0 lead over Angels. Bell now hitting a ringing .351/.450/.553, for a 1.003 OPS.

EDIT: Yadiel Hernandez adds a solo shot in 2nd to make it 2-0. Another ‘under the radar’ player, now hitting a noteworthy .382.
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: May 07, 2022 at 10:09 PM (#6075718)
Joey Dunand make his Marlins debut tonight with a homer and a double to get started.

as Triple Crown season began today with an 80-to-1 shot winning the Ky Derby, might be worth noting that Dunand's bloodlines include the fact that he is the nephew is .... wait for it, wait for it.... A-ROD !
   40. Walt Davis Posted: May 07, 2022 at 10:19 PM (#6075720)
Are you a contending team? Can you use an upgrade at C?

Don't wait!! Make your overly generous offer for Willson Contreras before midnight tonight and we will throw in Jason Heyward and half his remaining salary at no extra cost!** Offer valid in all 50 states, the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico and the Provinces of Ontario and Manitoba.

** Other than half his remaining salary.
   41. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 10:20 PM (#6075721)
Brandon Belt activated from IL today, takes one swing and gets pulled mid at-bat. That sucks. His previous stint was covid and this looked like an oblique or shoulder issue
   42. The Duke Posted: May 07, 2022 at 10:36 PM (#6075724)
Buxton out again. Why can't this guy stay healthy for even half a season? He is the poster child for "health is a skill "
   43. Dillon Gee Escape Plan Posted: May 08, 2022 at 07:37 AM (#6075745)
HOW WILL THE RED SOX LOSE TODAY?!
   44. Rally Posted: May 08, 2022 at 09:09 AM (#6075752)
Buxton is the real life Ricardo Rosario. In my OOTP league, Rosario is a young shortstop with gold glove defense, top of the line batting, and top of the line power. But can’t stay healthy. Played a mere 12 games 2 years ago, and 11 last year. This season he seemed to be over it, played 25 games in April hitting 311/415/456. Then tore his quad.

43...You can't lose them all.
   46. The Duke Posted: May 08, 2022 at 09:55 AM (#6075758)
WSJ had an article on MLB covid protocols. Said they have stopped mass testing and now only test when people feel sick and some players are now only out for a day or two if they can deliver two negative tests.

This raises the issue of how there can be so many positive tests if they are only testing people with cold symptoms or people in close contact with affected players. Covid must be quite prevalent right now.
   47. The Duke Posted: May 08, 2022 at 12:09 PM (#6075769)
Cano released and the race is on to see who signs him: sign him Cincinnati! He could still make 3000

Anecdotally, it is (at least around here).

The Red Sox game started at 11:30 today...why? Ridiculous.

Hey! Nice round of applause for...the HP ump! (He took a foul tip square in the center of his mask, and went down for a few minutes. His day is over.)
   50. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 08, 2022 at 01:11 PM (#6075779)
Maybe the early start has to do with Mother's Day.

Nice, JD. 1st pitch GiDP, after 1st and 2nd, no outs. Good aggression there.
   51. The Duke Posted: May 08, 2022 at 03:35 PM (#6075788)
Game 1 to Phils. - they could use a DH sweep

The Red Sox game started at 11:30 today...why? Ridiculous.

every Sunday from now to the rest of the year, it's the Amazon Prime Game of the Week - available on Amazon Prime, of course. something about how the early starts guarantees they are the only game in town for the first 9 minutes - so the first 3 full innings.
   53. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 08, 2022 at 04:34 PM (#6075793)

uh, yeah, 90 minutes. stepped on my own punch line there

I think the unis they wore around the time Aaron broke the record are the best ones they've ever had.

Selective endpoint alert:

Jean Segura is one of 5 active players with at least 100 HRs, 225 doubles and 45 triples!
   57. Howie Menckel Posted: May 08, 2022 at 06:48 PM (#6075809)
Scherzer's 15-decision winning streak ended today.

but one streak may hold: the Mets went 4-0-10 in 14 doubleheaders last year, and it looks like they'll avoid a sweep in the first one today.

Mets "batted around" across parts/all of 3 innings today with, in order:
K
BB
BB
K
K
K
K
BB
K

not sure who was more bored by the "action" - the fans, or the fielders.

is B.B. K(ing) still around to do a commercial celebrating all the excitement?
   58. Dillon Gee Escape Plan Posted: May 08, 2022 at 07:01 PM (#6075811)
George Kirby with a very solid MLB debut against the Rays.

6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's on 81 pitches
   59. Hombre Brotani Posted: May 08, 2022 at 07:35 PM (#6075816)
With the Angels down 4-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Shohei Ohtani doubles in the tying runs, then Rendon singles him in to win it! What a great bit of drama!
   60. Howie Menckel Posted: May 08, 2022 at 09:23 PM (#6075826)
Mets still looking for that elusive first series sweep in 2022.

but when you have gone 8-0-1 in winning series so far, you can live with it.....
