1. Hombre BrotaniI might have to uses whatever it is that microsoft is using.
Meanwhile, a classis Cubs August game. Jump out to a 6-1 lead over the Sox in the second, proceed to give up 12 runs over 3 innings to trail 13-6. If there's a highlight it's that Wisdom has shaved his beard but kept the mustache so now looks less like Bryant and a bit more like Mike Schmidt (but not much). Still it did the trick and he homered earlier.
I guess the other highlight would be the most classic dropped pop-up you've ever seen. With 2 outs (of course), simple pop to SS, Romine is totally there, has it under control, non-chalants it, hits off center in the glove, look of "oh ####\" crosses his face, still has a half-decent chance to grab it before it hits the ground but doesn't. You could easily show this to Little Leaguers for the next century.
White Sox highlight is probably Reynaldo Lopez holding the Cubs scoreless for 5 innings in relief.
Or some other ####### !
But the pitching (h/t defense) has truly been next-level nightmare hideous. And sure, they traded away some guys in the bullpen that were doing pretty solid jobs ... but they didn't trade nearly enough away to be this bad. And so you get games like tonight, where the offense shows up, at least for one inning, but it's not enough. Or even close to being enough, for that matter. Including tonight, they're giving up 7.3 r/g in the month of August. The Cubs' offense hasn't been good lately by any means, but even a truly great offense couldn't keep up with that.
Barring an amazing comeback win - and to be fair, as I write this, the Sox are doing their best to keep things interesting - the Cubs will be 0-3 in August when scoring 10+ runs and only 2-9 when scoring 5+. I mean, just think about that.
Fixed now. Just checking in again, Jim, do want donations or anything, I'm not giving bb-ref my money because it's an absurdly high amount, but $5 or so for this site is an easy expense.
Any site that I go to multiple times a day, that I actually *use*, and that I would have a hard time finding a replacement for if it were gone, gets my money. And it's not really absurdly high, if you actually use the site a lot.
Back in the day I used to buy annual digests, the Sporting News set of annual books, etc., and adjusted for inflation (or even not) I'm sure I was paying way more for a less-robust set of resources.
At $40 a year, I was fine with it, at $80 a year which is over the cost of a streaming site, for a site that just half ass provides data, it's absurd. Considering their new system pi, is inferior to what they had before.
And I'm fine with it. If bb-ref asked me to give them $12 a year just for their site, I would do it in a heart beat. PI was something that I did use semi frequently, it's something that I can program with Access and do on my own with the lahman's database on an annual basis if I wanted to spend the 20 hours or so programming that it takes to make an equivalent engine (or actually I've got code that does a bit more than pi did... as I wanted to create not just a black list of leaders, but a gray list (top ten or top #) but I just didn't want to go to the work for no reason to make my own database, and bb-ref has larger source files than Lahman now)
At $80 a year, it's just not worth it. They no longer allow you to search from a previously created search... that alone makes it worth less than the previous service, on top of that the interface is annoying as ####, as it constantly ask you to update instead of just selecting options and then allowing you as the user to click update when you want. The silly design assumption of assuming the user is an idiot is annoying.
Seems like you are severely undervaluing your own programming skills on a per hour basis.
Damn, I was up for a bit and I missed that sequence, that's pretty awesome. Can't blame guys for swinging away at Lynn today, dude's pretty hittable.
Not really... I would have to do a bunch of reading to do it, in reality it's roughly a 3 hour job for someone who "knows" what they are doing. For a guy like me, I would have to spend a crap ton of time of research in order to do it, but I'm more than capable of doing it. I know what needs to be done, I understand the concepts and have the programming languages necessary to do it.(although beyond Access, I'm not sure I need any third party software for the Lahman database)
pretty much, yeah.
he was transferred to 60-day IL and is not eligible to be activated before Sept. 13. plus he's just light-tossing even at this point. that above is like the most lukewarm "hot take" imaginable. saying he WILL pitch again this year? that would indeed be a hot take.
1. Starling Marte stole his 20th base for the A's, making him the first player to have 20 steals in both leagues in the same season.
What is cool about that is that means people are still stealing bases... I'm a Cardinal fan, and didn't think people still did that sort of thing. On top of that, Marte is currently 3rd in the NL in steals and 4th in the Al in steals. (tied with the guy I'm going to mention in the next part)
2. Ohtani stole his 20th base of the season today. I get that 20/40 isn't really a thing, but it's impressive enough... add in he might end up being 20/40/10 for the season (with the 10 being wins as a pitcher) and he might have one of the more impressive (understatement) seasons of all time.
Baseball is just awesome.
And...
Dad!
Actually, that was indeed my father's name. Given name was Billy, which he hated. Clyde as a middle name didn't help much, either.
I've wondered for years if he was middle-named for Clyde Barrow, who'd already made quite a name for himself, particularly in that area (southeast La.) when my father was born in 2/33. (Bonne & Clyde were killed 15 months after near where my dad was born.)
went to Jerry Koosman Night last night, as Mets finally retired his jersey. fellow '69 Mets Ed Kranepool, Art Shamsky, and Wayne Garrett were in attendance, as was now de facto Mets ambassador Mike Piazza. well-done ceremony.
Kooz: "I wish I could still fit in my old uniform - and do it all over again."
Amen, bro !
good crowd, stunned by Conforto's clutch late 3-run PH HR for a 5-3 win as Braves lose to boot.
Mets now 7.5 games back on Aug. 29.
'69 Mets were 6 back on Aug. 23 and 5 games back on Sept. 3.
I turned 8 on the day of the sixth win in a 7-game streak, launching a 38-11 finish and a ticket toward immortality......
With the qualification that the Phils are as COVID stupid as any team, that’s as Metsian as it comes.
I didn't see/hear it, but it seems there's been some chanting of "DFA" directed at him recently. Could be a contributing factor, though I admit to confusion about the whole situation.
Red Sox up 4-0, however gaining ground on the "teams that never lose"(with yesterday's NY game an exception) seems to be an impossible task.
No idea. Schedules have gotten weird this year. Maybe it's a corona thing but I don't see the connection. Off-days had been Mondays and Thursdays for as long as I remembered and had been aware. Yankees were just off on a Wednesday and I believe they were off on either a Friday or Saturday within the last couple months. I guess being off on a Sunday is a sure sign that those regular Sunday doubleheaders we all recall so fondly from 60 years ago are not coming back.
What other MLB players have had a season like that? Who first comes into your mind?
Rickey Henderson. Never scored more runs than he had hits.
Bonds. Ruth. Williams. Gehrig. Never had more R or RBI than H in any season.
Hack Wilson set the RBI record with 191. He had 208 hits that year. Manny Ramirez, 1999; drove in 165. Had more hits.
Not Joey Gallo or Adam Dunn.
Now, I did find this; Mark McGwire, his last 3 seasons, drove in more runs than he had hits.
And, a utility infielder named Tillie Shafer in 1912 scored 48 runs on 47 hits. Some pinch-running appearances helped that.
But NO ONE has scored 50 runs with fewer than 50 hits. NO ONE has driven in 50 runs on fewer than 50 hits. And Yasmani Grandal... might do BOTH of those.
