What we know about the Angels’ deal with Anaheim - Los Angeles Times

The last and most important question: Can the Angels still afford to sign Gerrit Cole?

Yes, but the cost probably would not be much less than — to pick a not-so-random number — $325 million. Maybe the Angels could throw in naming rights for a new ballpark and replace Angel Stadium with Cole Field.

If that's what it takes, get it done. I know it's going to take an absurd amount of money, but Cole would be such a huge difference maker for the Angels roster given the state of pitching in their farm system that it seems worth it at almost any price within the realm of reason.

Problem is, the same is true for the Yankees.

It's true for a couple of teams, the Yanks and Angels are just the two richest ones. I think the Angels will get him because (1) I'm a relentless homer, and (2) the Angels really have no choice. Like JAHV said, this is essentially an existential move for the franchise. The Yankees can, and have, been able to compete without Cole. The Angels can't, and won't. With Trout in his prime and costing a ton, and essentially zero front line pitching coming up, the Angels have to buy their pitching or waste their significant investment in Trout. They HAVE to get Cole, and Cole HAS to pitch well, along with Ohtani and Heaney.

The next free agent pitcher in Cole's neighborhood of age and skills won't be until Syndergaard in 2022 (and there'll certainly be a bidding war for him, too, if the Mets don't lock him up). The Angels have managed themselves into a position where they have to pay the premium. Otherwise, it's 80 wins for the next five years, and a full-on fan revolt.

Why couldn't the Angels go for Strasburg if the Yankees bid crazy for Cole, and vice versa?

I'm pretty sure both teams will keep lines of communication open with Strasburg since both guys are rep'd by Boras, but Strasburg doesn't seem likely to leave. IIRC, he had ordered Boras to "get it done" or somesuch the last time out to ensure he stayed in DC. Cole, on the other hand, couldn't seem to want out of Houston fast enough. Plus, Cole is younger and has a better record in both health and performance.

Although all the Astros news has been focused on their cheating at the plate I don’t think we know yet whether something was also going on with pitching - until I knew for sure I wouldn’t Want to be betting the farm on an Astro

Presumably any cheating techniques he learned in Houston could be ported to his new club. Unlike with sign stealing, I don't know how a pitcher could benefit from any such multi-player scheme.

Given how much the Astros have fallen in public sentiment in recent weeks, Cole's immediate disowning of them the second the WS ended now looks like a point in his favor.
