What would a Mets trade package for Luis Castillo look like?

If the Reds decide to trade Castillo this offseason, a reasonable ask would be one top prospect who is also a top 100 prospect in baseball, and one other prospect inside a team’s top 10.

For the Mets, Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty will be off-limits in pretty much any trade. So inquiring teams can forget those two.

That means that for Castillo, a fair offer from the Mets could be SS Ronny Mauricio (ranked No. 3 on SNY’s Top 20 Mets prospects list and No. 53 on the MLB Pipeline Top 100) and RHP J.T. Ginn (ranked No. 5 on SNY’s Top 20). And the Mets would need to sign Castillo to an extension to make that deal worthwhile.

One issue with the above could be the fact that the Reds have highly thought of SS prospect Matt McLain, who could make his MLB debut in 2023. But Mauricio might wind up at third base or second base long-term.

If the Reds are seeking an outfield prospect or first base prospect who’s close to the majors in any deal for Castillo, the Mets might not be a fit as a trade partner.

I am pretty sure all it would take is Dustin Martin and Drew Butera.

McLain could be a 2B candidate, except that the Reds have reigning NL ROY Jonathan India there.

Reds like Jose (Garcia) Barrero, who hasn't hit in two grande cups of coffee with the Reds - but he made 5 starts in CF late in 2021.

BBHQ has Elly De La Cruz at No. 3 on the Reds prospect list (and tops among batters). 2B-SS who they say may wind up at SS or 3B, 6-foot-2, 150 pounds, 20 years old, said to have potential 30-30 HR/SB ceiling (remember when that was a thing?). McLain is the No. 4 prospect, age 22 out of UCLA and will start 2022 (if there is one) in AA ball.

It would be remarkable for a team to have 4 young infield prospects all turn into starting-caliber infielders. That's not a real problem.

no, but if the Reds are looking to trade Castillo, I'm not sure my crown jewel in return is another SS prospect - unless the Reds think their own are overrated.

seems more likely that the Mets are shopping Mauricio (blocked by Lindor) than the Reds are seeking to obtain him. Reds faked it at SS last year with journeyman Kyle Farmer (86 OPS+ overall, 115 starts at SS) and Eugenio Suarez (80 OPS+ overall, 32 starts at SS).

so they need a 2022 SS, but I would expect them add a short-term one as Suarez tries for a rebound at 3B and Farmer goes back to Swiss-Army-knifing.

I think I would have gotten a better reaction if I had said: "I hope the Mets don't drop the ball on this trade."

If the Reds decide to trade Castillo this offseason, a reasonable ask would be

for Bob Castellini to sell the team.

Seriously, there is no reason at all for the Reds to deal a pitcher of Castillo's caliber while he's under control for two more seasons. They were a little over .500 last year, hardly white flag territory. Just cash out while the cable deals are still fat if you're that cash poor.

Some other guy[s] (NYM) >> Luis Castillo (CIN)

Man, I'm old. I initially thought -- and this is neither a joke or a lie -- that this was somehow about Luis Castillo, one of the few people in the sillyball era who managed to be good without hardly ever hitting homers.

Until Minaya gave him a four-year contract.

That's funny, I was trying to remember if that was the same name of the Mets/Marlins 2B.....glad to know that I'm not (totally) losing it.
