HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. TomH Posted: June 28, 2021 at 03:32 PM (#6026701)
a few stats o' the day:

1) The Washington Nationals lead the NL in team batting average; .248. This would be the lowest figure to lead a league since 1968 (AL, Oak, .240!)

2) Despite this, the Nats are fourth from LAST in runs scored per game. Poor walks, poor power, poor clutchness.

3) The Astros team avg of .278 is waaay above everyone else. Almost 3 standard deviations (2.98) above the AL average. As 3 STDEVS normally encompass 299 out of 300 data points, that is a big ##.
   3. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: June 28, 2021 at 04:18 PM (#6026712)
[2] They are 2.96 SDs above the MLB average (using sample sd). They're only 2.23 SDs above the AL mean.
   4. JJ1986 Posted: June 28, 2021 at 04:53 PM (#6026729)
The 33-44 Marlins are tied for 5th in the NL in run differential, are 2nd in their division and only 2 runs behind the Mets, whom they trail by 9 games.

Somebody noted the other day that the Yanks have a slightly higher BA/OBP/SLG than the Rays yet the Rays have scored nearly 1 r/g more. They noted the Yanks' crappy clutchiness. (The Rays also play in a pitcher's park but that doesn't help their raw r/g.) It goes a bit farther than that though.

Despite the slightly lower OBP, the Rays have 806 PA with RISP, 4th most, while the Yanks have just 642, 3rd fewest. That strikes me as extra weird. The Rays are just middle of the pack in OPS with RISP but their opportunities have them 4th in RBI (the Red Sox doing extra well there). Despite their modest league-average OBP, the Rays are getting over 10 PA with RISP per game; the Yanks about 8. They do lead the league in SB (the saber-kings are leading the league in SB!) but they're not running wild. (The Yanks are last with a pathetic 16.) But the Rays are also #1 in Ks. Rays #1 in Ks, Yanks #4; Rays #1 in BB, Yanks #2; Rays 95 HR, Yanks 100 HR ... so it's not TTO-related.

Anyway, the big story is still the Yanks' pathetic RISP numbers ... and the Mets are arguably even worse ... but just the gap in opportunities explains about 1/4 of the gap in runs scored.

The Pirate lineup is an absolute abomination. Can't field either

The Cubs lineup today against MIL is also an abomination; the big market version of it anyway.

TBF, their own AVG counts twice as much towards the AL mean as the MLB mean...

Now that the Red Sox have done their usual beating up of the patsy's like the Yankees, they are now facing stiffer competition in the form of the Royals.

And wow Ohtani went deep again. It really is quite incredible how good this guy is with both ball and bat.
   10. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 28, 2021 at 07:48 PM (#6026758)
Bundy gives up another of what's sure to be many runs allowed tonight. I'm just here for the 4-5 times Shohei comes to the plate.
   11. TomH Posted: June 28, 2021 at 07:53 PM (#6026759)
JCI, #3, thank you! I was careless and wrote "AL" without re-checking.

And if you take the Astros AVG out to 4 decimal places, they are only 2.93 stdevs above.
   12. salvomania Posted: June 28, 2021 at 07:59 PM (#6026761)
Bundy horks up his dinner behind the mound with two outs in the second, has to leave the game.

Starting pitcher puking on the mound? But he left with the game tied.

EDIT: Flat, stomach-settling coke to #12.

I see Schwarber led off with another HR against the Mets. Turner & Para [Baby Shark back at the ballpark!] also have solo shots to make it 3-0.

Is Schwarber having the best hitting season ever for a non-tendered player? I’m at a loss for who else might be in the running.
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: June 28, 2021 at 08:21 PM (#6026764)
ex-phorgettable Phillies SP Jared Eickhoff is getting a few starts for the battered Mets - and he already has two sac bunts tonight.

I may have my guy!
13th-pitcher swingman with an occasionally useful skill in extra innings - especially at home.
keep the other team off the board in the top of the 10th, and if the second man up is a skillful batsman who is good at driving home runners from third with fewer than 2 out, first send up Eickhoff to do his thing and set the wheels in motion.

this will be a 'thing' someday - and I'll never get any credit. c'est le vie.
:)
   16. TomH Posted: June 28, 2021 at 08:22 PM (#6026765)
Schwarber's HR in the first inning tonight was his 10th bomb in his last 33 AB.

I notice one stretch in 2001 when Barry B went deep 11 times in 32 AB.

#14 ... that would be a tough one to nail down. In terms of the transaction, at b-r it just appears as "granted free agency" so then you'd have to track back and take a guess at service time (tracked for current players but it desappears once they retire). The best player of this "type" might be Jose Bautista who was rule 5'd, waived, sold and traded for a PTBNL then turned into an excellent hitter at age 29. But near as I can tell, he was never non-tendered, just not valued.

Or David Ortiz (even better than Bautista) who I think was non-tendered by the Twins but b-r lists this as a "release." Over in Cubs-land, we've often speculated that if anybody was gonna turn into the next Ortiz/Cruz, it would be Schwarber.

EDIT: Also JD Martinez was released by the Astros late in spring ... I thought that was a low-level trade.
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 28, 2021 at 08:27 PM (#6026768)
Another Schwarber HR, his 2nd of the game, and #24 for the season. 4-0.
   20. Walt Davis Posted: June 28, 2021 at 08:35 PM (#6026769)
#14, 16: But it's "just" his 14th HR in June so still 6 off of Sosa's June 98. He doesn't seem to have done anything like 10 HR in 33 AB though.

By the 4th game of the year in 98, Mac had 4 HR and 12 RBI. Best stretch I noticed was 9 HR in 29 AB (but more PA) and ending the season with 5 in 12 put him over the top.

EDIT: err, 15th. Probably 16th by the time this gets posted.
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: June 28, 2021 at 08:51 PM (#6026771)
Schwarber has 7 HR in his last 2 1/2 games against the Mets, which seems like a lot
   22. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 28, 2021 at 08:56 PM (#6026773)
Jose Iglesias just made a wonderful snag up the middle then did a sweet 360 and threw out the runner at first. The Angel broadcaster Darren Sutton freaked out, while John Sterling called it like someone just died. Homer announcers, they just don't know how to not be homers.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: June 28, 2021 at 09:08 PM (#6026774)
Cardinals scored a run before the other team.... so I'm guessing that the Diamondbacks will respond with a 4 run inning to make up for that gaffe.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: June 28, 2021 at 09:11 PM (#6026776)
Of course with a man on third and one out, it would be too much to expect they could score a second run.

Neftali Felix sighting for the ultra bullpen challenged Phils. First game in MLB in over 1400 days!

Should be a wonderful story, right? He comes in with 1 on, 1 out and throws a BB, K, HBP, GS, 2B, GO.
According to the Phils announcer, they are 2 blown saves from the team record in a season. That’s awesomely bad.

According to the Phils announcer, they are 2 blown saves from the team record in a season. That’s awesomely bad.

can confirm that 'pen is awesomely bad, but "blown SV" to me isn't terribly useful - and even less so with the silly phantom runner rule. allow a groundout and a modest fly ball and "YOU'VE GOT BLOWN SAVE!"

some managers try to keep the other team from getting a lead by using "firemen" - 1970s-style - to quell a crisis.
others wait until the game is at least tied, artificially dropping their BS total.
and I wonder if, with so many pitchers are now used, a "Holds vs BS" would imply that today's RPs are better (which also would strike me as a reach).

to sum up, for me the BS category has a lot of BS.

although I doubt there are any GOOD bullpens near the top in BS.
:)
   32. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: June 28, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6026786)
Enyel de los Santos comes in for the Phils in the eighth and the circus continues.
BB, shift beating single, bunt right back to de los Santos who fumbles then throws wildly to first allowing both runners to score. It was 4-2 Phils going into the bottom of the seventh, it’s now 9-4 Reds.

This 2 year run of bullpen vomit is like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Edit: 10-4 and counting now
Edit2: 12-4 and IF Nick Maton makes his pitching debut

Red Sox hang on, 6-5, still on top in East. Will miracles never cease?
   35. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 28, 2021 at 10:19 PM (#6026790)
Dylan Bundy barfing behind the mound appears to have been the key to the Angels win. If only he’d stayed in to pitch to his 6.78 ERA, the Yanks might have scored enough to win.
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: June 28, 2021 at 10:23 PM (#6026792)
Bases loaded two outs, game is 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning relief pitcher came in for the Diamondbacks in the 5th inning, pitched one inning, his spot came up in the lineup, and the Diamondbacks kept the relief pitcher in to bat. Strikes out on 3 straight called strikes.

To paraphrase TLR, that may not have been the stupidest manager decision ever, but it's tied for dumbest. Not even Shildt or Herzog could have made a worse tactical move.

The travails of a reliever. A few days after an appearance against the Dodgers, Cub reliever Ryan Tepera had a 1.96 ERA. Now in his last inning of work (1/3 a couple of days ago, 2/3 today), he has given up 5 runs and is now at 3.11.
   39. Walt Davis Posted: June 28, 2021 at 11:36 PM (#6026796)
I spoke too soon. Add another ER.
   40. Walt Davis Posted: June 28, 2021 at 11:43 PM (#6026797)
Might as well get it all out of their system today -- Trevor Megill comes on and has given up another 3 with 2 men still on, hasn't gotten an out yet. This 4-4 game is now 11-4. (Cubs pen has been brilliant, I am not complaining.)
   41. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 28, 2021 at 11:45 PM (#6026798)
How long has this inning been going? The Cubs took forever in the top of the inning despite squandering yet another opportunity. It’s been at least 45 minutes.
   42. Walt Davis Posted: June 28, 2021 at 11:45 PM (#6026799)
14-4. Maybe I should stop now so this poor young man can get an out.

EDIT: Sogard to the mound.
   43. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 28, 2021 at 11:46 PM (#6026800)
My god, they might not ever get that third out.
   44. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 28, 2021 at 11:47 PM (#6026801)
I mean, the Dodgers and Brewers are both very good, but Thursday night seems like a lifetime ago with how badly the Cubs have played since.
   45. Walt Davis Posted: June 28, 2021 at 11:56 PM (#6026803)
So the Brewers have an ad behind the plate for "1990s Decade Weekend." (July 9-11 for those making travel plans.) "1990s weekend" is not sufficient, they want fans to know any year of that decade qualifies? Not just "90s weekend" to make sure some overly clever nerd doesn't show up in a waistcoat saying "you didn't specify 1890s or 1990s"?
   46. The Duke Posted: June 29, 2021 at 12:22 AM (#6026804)
The diamondbacks need to fire Lovullo. He had a full season of inept decision-making tonight. No wonder they are losing so much. His least worst decision was incomprehensibly having his pitcher step off mound and throw to third to challenge a runner missing third base on his way home. 3rd base ump declines to agree so he uses a replay to try again even though there was no clear replay that could possibly overturn the call and two replays that made it look like he clearly touched third. Very weird
