HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   2. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 02:19 PM (#5881234)
I'd hate to say today is a must win for the Cubs, but they have to win today.
   3. salvomania Posted: September 20, 2019 at 02:56 PM (#5881247)
Wonder how the Pirates are going to do this weekend vs the Brewers...
   4. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:17 PM (#5881256)
Both teams are doing a good job of squandering chances so far.
   5. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:25 PM (#5881262)
Anyone but this current hurt Rizzo scores there. Then again, anyone but Rizzo probably was on third after the Castellanos single. Or maybe even on 2nd with a double off his own bloop and scoring on the Castellanos single.
   6. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:26 PM (#5881263)
####### squandering. 3rd double play through 3 innings for the Cubs.
   7. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:26 PM (#5881265)
Three innings, three double plays.
   8. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:37 PM (#5881270)
This has been some good stuff from Mills today.
   9. salvomania Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:37 PM (#5881271)
Who is Alec Mills, and why can't the Cardinals hit him?
   10. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:41 PM (#5881272)
Well at least that takes away the possibility of another double play.
   11. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:45 PM (#5881274)
Traumatic hematoma flashbacks...
   12. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:46 PM (#5881275)
Mills is rotation depth, might be a 4th/5th starter type. Had a decent enough year in AAA, and has looked good in his spot appearances this year and last for the Cubs. I think was once a somewhat regarded Royals prospect; he's not exactly young.
   13. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 03:59 PM (#5881279)
I'd give him one more guy, but understand this. Using Ryan this soon - to only go 1/3 of an inning (however many batters that ends up being) - is aggressive.
   14. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:11 PM (#5881284)
Double #57
   15. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:15 PM (#5881285)
Rizzo down again early. So, clearly this is a precautionary strategy they're taking with him.
   16. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:16 PM (#5881286)
Lead-off walks are always good ideas in one-run games.
   17. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:22 PM (#5881288)
That was very clearly a strike, but Contreras caught that terribly because the pitch totally missed the target.
   18. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:27 PM (#5881289)
Well, that's the same as pitch 1, which was called a strike. I want competence *and* consistency.
   19. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:34 PM (#5881290)
...that comment applies to relievers as well as umpires.
   20. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:36 PM (#5881291)
Does Joe realize he's going to have to cover (at least) 3 more innings? He's burning through relievers like {insert punchline}
   21. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:40 PM (#5881292)
"I'm going to use ALL of my relievers, because obviously every single one of them will have good stuff today! What could possibly go wrong??"
   22. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:43 PM (#5881293)
Not to be overlooked is the Cubs once again doing little offensively outside of squandering base runners
   23. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 04:55 PM (#5881298)
Now that he's coming in, I'm surprised Chatwood didn't come in to start the 6th with the Cubs planning on giving him at least 2 full innings.
   24. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:01 PM (#5881300)
Ozuna defensively in LF is what people think Schwarber is.
   25. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:05 PM (#5881301)
Gotta cash in here
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:07 PM (#5881302)
God damn this team
   27. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:12 PM (#5881304)
This guy's beard looks pretty itchy.
   28. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:12 PM (#5881305)
Bums!
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:16 PM (#5881309)
Rowan Wick featured pretty prominently in Megdal's book, The Cardinal Way.
   30. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:17 PM (#5881310)
Why only 1 inning for Chatwood?
   31. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:18 PM (#5881312)
Why only 1 inning for Chatwood?
Have ya met Joe?
   32. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:23 PM (#5881316)
excessive changes finally biting joe in the ass
   33. salvomania Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:24 PM (#5881318)
Rowan Wick featured pretty prominently in Megdal's book, The Cardinal Way.

I'm looking at his Cardinals minor league stats wondering how he was ever able to be selected off waivers by the Padres...
   34. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:25 PM (#5881319)
He’s got nothing.
   35. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:25 PM (#5881320)
Finally? Maybe you missed the earlier innings.

I also don't blame the manager when your best reliever struggles. Not sure what this has to do with anything Joe has done to this point - yeah, I'd have left Chatwood in, but then Wick was likely to get the 9th anyway.
   36. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:27 PM (#5881322)
Wow how is that a ball?
   37. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:28 PM (#5881323)
Oh come on. Horrible missed strike.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:28 PM (#5881324)
Cardinal announcers couldn't believe that pitch was called a ball on Bader.
   39. phredbird Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:31 PM (#5881326)

oh he//

and now martinez? great.
   40. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:31 PM (#5881328)
Cue the bases clearing double because Cards fans don’t like Martinez
   41. phredbird Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:32 PM (#5881329)

STEP UP TO THE PLATE JOSE ... JEEZ
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:33 PM (#5881330)
I like Martinez...but he hasn't had a good year this year and seems to be pressing a bit all season long. Which is funny, because the first time in his career he has a multi-year guarantee.
   43. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:33 PM (#5881331)
Phew.

Get a run!
   44. phredbird Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:34 PM (#5881332)

unbelievable. how many times are we going to do this?!?
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:36 PM (#5881334)
unbelievable. how many times are we going to do this?!?

This has been Cardinal baseball lately, and yet they have still managed to find a way to win more often than not.
   46. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:38 PM (#5881336)
Unreal
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:38 PM (#5881337)
That is what you do against the shift in a one run game in the 8th inning.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:38 PM (#5881338)
of course that is not what you do after getting a man on base in front of you.... smh....
   49. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:40 PM (#5881339)
If there were a way to have more GIDPs than innings, the Cubs would surely find it today.
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:40 PM (#5881340)
That double play makes me wonder if we have enough statcast data to figure out if it's possible that a player's (on base) speed is diminished when it's a ball in play on the first pitch vs the third or fourth pitch? (just a random thought I had)
   51. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:40 PM (#5881341)
At least the final week of the season will be less stressful
   52. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:42 PM (#5881342)
Oooo Holland just to make sure it’s not a one run game
   53. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:43 PM (#5881343)
The thing is, I'm not sure who Joe should put in here. But that's only because he's used just about everyone worth using so far. Maybe Kintzler, since he's back, but that's playing with fire too; that hasn't stopped him before though.
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:43 PM (#5881344)
Cardinal announcers "Cardinals with just four hits....FOUR HITS and still leading 2-1".... I don't think they realize that the 7 walks and hit by pitch might have figured into some of that.
   55. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:44 PM (#5881345)
I also don't blame the manager when your best reliever struggles. Not sure what this has to do with anything Joe has done to this point
The criticism was because Joe's "I WILL USE ALL OF TEH RELEEVURZ" fixation results in things like, oh, say, Derek Holland in a high-leverage situation.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:45 PM (#5881346)
You do have to remember it's still the Cardinals offense coming up... they really haven't lit the world on fire the past couple of months, outside of maybe a strong 5 or so game streak a couple of weeks ago, many of their games have been low scoring affairs on both sides of the equation.
   57. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:45 PM (#5881347)
Thats my problem with the incessant pitching changes. You burn through everyone and also increase the odds of finding one or two guys who don’t have it that day.
   58. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:47 PM (#5881349)
If you are going to try and pick someone off, you might need to make sure that the first baseman knows it's happening.
   59. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:47 PM (#5881350)
The criticism was because Joe's "I WILL USE ALL OF TEH RELEEVURZ" fixation results in things like, oh, say, Derek Holland in a high-leverage situation.

Well, when you cut off the rest of my comment, it makes it seem like I'm not acknowledging that. IOW, the problem with that was obviously going to come due now - it wasn't because Wick was struggling, which is what I was responding to.
   60. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:48 PM (#5881351)
Thats my problem with the incessant pitching changes. You burn through everyone and also increase the odds of finding one or two guys who don’t have it that day.

Agree... it's not that these guy may not be good, it's that you are increasing the chances of you finding the guy who has nothing when you have already found a guy who does have something.
   61. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:48 PM (#5881352)
If you are going to try and pick someone off, you might need to make sure that the first baseman knows it's happening.

You also might want to consider playing a major league quality pitcher and major league quality first baseman, but that's just me.
   62. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:48 PM (#5881353)
I keep getting confused: I'm a fan. Will I or won't I strike out with Gold Coast Bank?
   63. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:48 PM (#5881354)
My god.
   64. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:49 PM (#5881356)
Well, when you cut off the rest of my comment, it makes it seem like I'm not acknowledging that. IOW, the problem with that was obviously going to come due now - it wasn't because Wick was struggling, which is what I was responding to.
Noted. And now we have...Strop. What could possibly go wrong?
   65. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:49 PM (#5881355)
Agree... it's not that these guy may not be good, it's that you are increasing the chances of you finding the guy who has nothing when you have already found a guy who does have something.

We're all on the same page here, btw. I'm not saying anything different.
   66. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:49 PM (#5881357)
61: Joe has burned through all of both today.
   67. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:50 PM (#5881358)
I keep getting confused: I'm a fan. Will I or won't I strike out with Gold Coast Bank?

I have no idea. Worse, I don't know where you can find that out.
   68. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:51 PM (#5881359)
I have no idea. Worse, I don't know where you can find that out.
Damn. You wouldn't happen to know where I can ensure that all of my business goals get across home plate, do you?
   69. phredbird Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:54 PM (#5881362)

yow, lots of close pitches today ... cards getting gifts, and not cashing in.
   70. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:55 PM (#5881363)
Ozuna has no desire to get a walk here.
   71. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:58 PM (#5881364)
Ya think those two tarts behind home plate can name more than three Cubs?
   72. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 05:59 PM (#5881365)
That's the hardest Strop has thrown, maybe all year, but definitely since his last couple of injury stints.
   73. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:01 PM (#5881367)
Walk him to set up the double play
   74. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:04 PM (#5881368)
Martinez being given a chance to redeem himself.
   75. phredbird Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:06 PM (#5881369)

mcarver, shut up.
   76. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:09 PM (#5881370)
Lol and so it’s up to Tony Kemp?
   77. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:10 PM (#5881371)
Going out with a whimper...maybe that's better than last night's tease.
   78. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:12 PM (#5881373)
Tease
   79. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:14 PM (#5881374)
This ump is trash
   80. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:14 PM (#5881375)
#### this ump. Geez.
   81. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:15 PM (#5881376)
Some interesting calls by this ump... that was probably 2-0 right there.
   82. cardsfanboy Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:15 PM (#5881377)
2-2 was better, but still probably not a strike.
   83. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:16 PM (#5881379)
Division is gone and I’d be amazed if they get that second wild card.

Choke job
   84. Howie Menckel Posted: September 20, 2019 at 06:16 PM (#5881380)

NL hits leader Ketel Marte now out for the season, just in time for next week's series against the Cardinals - who finally, finally catch one break.
   87. Howie Menckel Posted: September 20, 2019 at 07:27 PM (#5881391)
Jacob deGrom has gotten 153 K on his changeup this year.

second place in MLB is ..... 72.

I think this means he has a good changeup, but don't quote me on that.
   88. Bote Man Posted: September 20, 2019 at 07:56 PM (#5881393)
Glenn Geffner @GlennGeffner
Trea Turner has hit the 1,000th all-time home run at Marlins Park, which opened in 2012 and has, as of tonight, hosted 642 games. The homer was the 169th hit at Marlins Park this season, tying 2017 for the most ever in a season.
   89. Howie Menckel Posted: September 20, 2019 at 08:09 PM (#5881395)
warning to PHI fans - if they lose tonight, I am taking them off my Wild Card Board
   90. JJ1986 Posted: September 20, 2019 at 08:27 PM (#5881397)
The Brewers are never going to lose again.
   91. Howie Menckel Posted: September 20, 2019 at 08:38 PM (#5881398)
PIT's Brault had allowed 15 ER in his last 8 IP, but today only 1 of the first 3 runs allowed in the 1st inning vs MIL is earned - so that's something? all 3 outs were Ks, too - ok, I'm reaching here.

meanwhile deGrom with 5 more scoreless so the Mets lead - I'm just kidding, of course. it's 0-0
   92. JJ1986 Posted: September 20, 2019 at 08:48 PM (#5881399)
Are the Nats going to end the season a game short? There are 10 more days and they have 11 more games to play.
   93. Howie Menckel Posted: September 20, 2019 at 09:00 PM (#5881402)
McNeil and Rosario HR off tough LCastillo and it's 3-0 in the 7th.

#ZombieMets

deGrom 96 pitches thru 7 IP. let the thoroughbred keep racing
   94. Bote Man Posted: September 20, 2019 at 09:05 PM (#5881403)
Are the Nats going to end the season a game short? There are 10 more days and they have 11 more games to play.

The 2008 Nationals only played 161 games, so maybe they're just so tired of this season that they said "to hell with it" and won't play that 11th game.
   95. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 20, 2019 at 09:06 PM (#5881405)
With HRs By Aaron Judge & Tyler Wade so far tonight, the Yankees have pulled ahead of the Twins in The Race For 300, 294-293.

   97. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: September 20, 2019 at 09:15 PM (#5881409)
The Angels had winning records in May, June, and July. Since the last day of July, the Angels have gone 13-31. Right now, it feels like the whole franchise is broken.
   98. Howie Menckel Posted: September 20, 2019 at 09:19 PM (#5881410)
POLAR BEAR!

Alonso goes after a pitch low AND outside, lunges for it and parks it 437 feet away for his 50th HR.

first Met to to do it, obviously, and now has more than a week to erase Aaron Judge's 52 rookie HR from the MLB record books.

#ZombieMets lead 5-0 in 8th

I have only one word for this: juiced ball.

But I guess they only stick asterisks after the records of players, not balls.
   100. Howie Menckel Posted: September 20, 2019 at 09:26 PM (#5881413)
fair point.

with a regular ball that shot might have only gone about 407 feet.
