White Sox Extend Bummer’s Contract

Two months after extending Luis Robert, and less than a year after doing the same with Eloy Jiménez, the White Sox have locked in a contract for another young star, reportedly signing 26-year-old groundball specialist Aaron Bummer to a five-year extension worth a minimum of $16 million. The deal also includes options for Bummer’s 2025 and 2026 seasons, for $7.25 and $7.5 million, respectively, with $1.25 million buyouts in each year. If Bummer receives certain awards considerations, the final option year could be worth up to $10 million.

All told, the White Sox have guaranteed themselves a minimum of five and a maximum of seven years of Bummer’s services at a maximum cost of $32 million. Bummer has guaranteed himself $16 million. I suspect both parties will leave this deal feeling satisfied. As Bob Nightengale noted this is the largest extension given to a non-closer who has yet to qualify for arbitration in major league history.

Weird to extend a reliever for this long. Most guys are done after 2 or 3 good years.

Looking at the WS projected starting 9, it's 1 black guy and 8 hispanics. For the first time in years, they will be an interesting team. Not because the racial makeup of the team, just to be clear.

26-year-old groundball specialist middle relievers are "young stars" these days, eh?

He's young, and the deal is cheap, so it can't really backfire on them that much.

With that being said, I wouldn't want to sign a guy described as "groundball specialist" to a long contract, as that implies batters are making a lot more contact than you'd like.

Very interesting team - compelling mix of youth, ability, etc. I'll be watching them a bunch.

He's a LTOGY, apparently.

Seems like a good deal for everyone.

Well, he could start sucking immediately and then they wasted $16M. The guys got 1 year and 150 days of service time, he wasn't going anywhere.

Exactly. Looks to be a 3.50 ERA RP who got hit lucky.

His K-rate is over 8 which is not particularly good for a reliever but isn't contact-heavy. More impressive is just 4 HR in 64 IP in last year's superball season. Still a bizarre idea to guarantee years and money to a guy like this but to check how bizarre I'd have to be able to think of lots of other anonymous arb-eligible relievers of the past few years.

By the way, looking at the Sox contracts page, b-r still has Abreu listed at 1/$18 (QO). I thought they had agreed to a 3-year deal after he accepted the QO.

If this contract doesn't work out it'll be a huge...damn, there's a word for this.

Maybe they thought this was another of Madison Bumgarner's aliases.
