White Sox extend Moncada with five-year, $70 million pact

And the extensions keep on coming!

Ken Rosenthal had a scoop on Thursday, and it’s a biggie

Moncada gets $70 million over five years, with a team option worth $20 million bringing the total outlay to $90 million. Even with the option year, $15 million per season AAV is ridiculously good value for the White Sox.

The extension, long rumored but first given any sort of legs by South Side Hit Pen’s James Fox, would keep Moncada in town through 2024 (2025 with the team option).

Good for the White Sox, a smart move.

As for all the Red Sox fans out there, just remember that flags fly forever.

But holy smokes was the cost high.

The AAV comment is basically silly (which doesn't mean it's a bad deal). This covers this pre-arb year, 3 arb years, one FA year plus the option. Assuming the first FA year is around $20 M too this means he's getting $50 M for his 3 arb years. That's pretty good. It's not Mookie Betts good but it's better than Bryant's first 3 years (he's a super 2) and he set a first-year arb record. (OK, seems it's $25 M in the option year with a $5 M buyout so it's proably $45 for 3 arb years, $20 in first FA year with the $5 M buyout or the option at $25 M ... doesn't change things a lot).

He’s really fun to watch.

Checking Cots (which doesn't have any detail yet), I was reminded that Moncada got a huge signing bonus out of Cuba ($31 M paid out over 3 years). Assuming he wasn't ripped off for most of that, he was already set for life and had good leverage here.

The White Sox are really setting themselves up for a solid 5-year run

The White Sox are really setting themselves up for a solid 5-year run

They should be. Their win deferral strategy (consolidating wins in later years when they would be more likely to lead to post-season success) was very solid, and they got great returns for their high-end players (Sale; Quintana). Add that to some high draft choices for years in which the win deferral strategy was in place, and you get a boat-load of high end 20 year olds, some of whom will turn into stars.
