White Sox Promote Garrett Crochet

In an eye-opening promotion, the White Sox have selected the contract of left-hander Garrett Crochet, general manager Rick Hahn announced to reporters today (Twitter link via Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times). Chicago drafted the 21-year-old lefty out of Tennessee with the 11th overall pick of the 2020 draft. Righty Evan Marshall is going on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, which opens an active roster spot. Right-hander Ian Hamilton was designated for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster.

It’s obviously of the utmost rarity for a prospect to skip the minor leagues entirely, which Crochet will be doing in the absence of a conventional minor league season.

Is this true or are they just spinning a yarn?

If he’s any good at all, he’ll be inundated with home made sweaters.

Given they've clinched a playoff spot and given he has not other options for seeing game action this year, it makes sense to give him a few innings and see what he looks like. If he's been at the training site the last few weeks then he should be fit. If his stuff is good enough, maybe he pulls a K-Rod, Chapman, Price for the playoffs.

Trust me I'm disappointed I don't have a crochet joke instead.

You must feel like such a knitwit. You're gonna get the hook.

dude hit 101 on the radar gun tonight, no kidding.

seems like he has a postseason roster slot all sewn up, given that sort of heat.

meanwhile, even if the White Sox sent out Crochet, Knit, and Purl as their pitching order tonight - it still would pale in comparison to the 1998 Reds.

for one game, their left field-centerfield-right field positioning was, in order:

Young, Frank, and Stynes.

(Dmitri Young, Mike Frank, Chris Stynes)

Obviously I am not a knit wit or I'd have had a joke.

Yup, he was nasty last night. It seemed like an effortless 100 mph, if that's possible.

Does it cost you an option year to bring a guy to the big leagues if you're not bringing him up from a minor league team?

Related question: does it cost you an option to promote a guy in this foul year of our Lord 2020 (to update Hunter Thompson's phrase), given that there aren't any minor league teams?

In any case, I watched Crochet's debut last night, and he was, indeed, nasty. He gave up lots of runs in college, without the totally insane K rate as would befit a guy with his fastball (I mean, it was good, but not what you expect from a top relief prospect). But apparently the south sider's scouts thought that his fastball would play despite not much college success - and to my totally amateur eyes, it sure looked like they were right. He threw five straight pitches at 101 at one point, and zero of them were hittable.

Oops, wrong thread.

The excerpt says that they DFAed a guy to add Crochet to the 40-man roster, so he was never optioned in the first place.

I take some of the comments to confirm his name is pronounced "Cro-shay".

If it was pronounced otherwise, and he had come up before the radar gun, they could try a Feller-like contest of the Crochet Rocket against a motorcycle.

#8 - Option years provide for you to send a guy down when he's on the 40 (but not on the 25). He was never in that state, so unless he is subsequently sent down he will not burn an option this year.

One would assume they also drafted the college hitters who were hammering his MLB-ready fastball?
