White Sox Promote Nick Madrigal To Big Leagues

The White Sox have called up highly regarded infielder prospect Nick Madrigal, they announced Friday afternoon.

Madrigal, 23, is ranked as the No. 40 overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com. The White Sox selected him at No. 4 overall in the first round of the 2018 amateur draft. He’s expected to take over as the primary second baseman.

Madrigal hit .311 with four homers, 55 RBIs, a .377 on-base percentage and a .792 OPS in 120 games split across three minor league levels in 2019.

The timeline of Madrigal’s promotion a week into the 60-game season came as no surprise. By waiting a week, the White Sox delayed the start of Madrigal’s service time clock, ensuring an extra year of contract control on the back end of his deal.

In a corresponding move, Chicago designated reliever Kelvin Herrera for assignment.

I guess he worked out his issues at AAA.

Madrigal will face Kris Bubic tonight, who is also making his MLB debut, and both were part of the 2018 draft class. They also faced each other that spring, when Bubic was at Stanford and Madrigal was at Oregon State, with Madrigal going 1-for-2 with a walk, strikeout, and triple.

That is great research; I wonder is that is the fastest re-union of a college v. college match-up, ever (less than 2 years).
