White Sox’s Lance Lynn ejected after tossing belt at umpire during foreign-substance check

Chicago White Sox right-hander Lance Lynn was ejected from his start on Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics (GameTracker) during a foreign-substance check. Lynn seemingly was not tossed because he was found to have a substance on his person or his glove, but, rather, because he irked an umpire by tossing his belt at him from the dugout.

Lynn and White Sox manager Tony La Russa went onto the field to discuss the matter with the umpiring staff, but he remained ejected all the same.

Lynn, 34, had held the Athletics to one run in four innings despite allowing a lot of traffic on the basepaths. Indeed, he had permitted three hits and three walks to go with his four strikeouts. He even had to escape a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the third, striking out two consecutive batters before inducing an inning-ending pop-up.

"Being a dick to somebody just trying to do his job doesn't always work out" seems like it ought to stop being newsworthy at some point.

Strange to me that with a zillion cameras in the ballparks they can't find a better angle of the throw. I'm not sure what happened with Lynn. He knows he's getting checked, just wait a second while the umpire comes over. I'm sure he's annoyed but such is life.

That said I hope nothing more comes of this. I don't think Lynn deserves a suspension here assuming there wasn't something more to the throw than "fine here take it" and of course that the check turned up nothing illegal.

Umpires are useless. Lynn’s right. Do your job correctly - don’t throw me out because you can’t be bothered to do your job correctly. The players are the game, not the umps.

Lynn was upset with the strike zone all game up until that point (and was struggling more than usual, regardless - which adds to his bad mood).

Not defending him - this definitely deserved an ejection. But that is why he was so pissy.

It's good to know that if I ever decide I need to throw stuff at people to express my frustration, there is a small but reliable portion of the population that will reflexively defend me and my jackassery.

Actually, he was thrown out for saying, "Prease to examine belt, honolabre umpile."

C'mon. Japanese doesn't have any 'l's, Chinese doesn't have any 'r's, you can't just mix and match which you substitute with which...

What's your ERA?

I guess a "Go Sox!" or "Lance Lynn is an American treasure and HOW DARE YOU, SIR" motive never occurred to me.
