White Sox’s Ryan Tepera suspects Astros may still be stealing signs at home

Ryan Tepera was happy to be in Chicago for Game 3 of the ALDS on Sunday night. He thinks the White Sox will get an honest couple of games there against the Astros.

The right-hander wasn’t very subtle in suggesting that the Astros might still be stealing signs four years after the team put a camera in center field in its home park to spy on catchers and relayed the intel to hitters by beating on a garbage can in the dugout. Houston has been accused of cheating in 2018 and 2019, as well.

“The stadium (Guaranteed Rate Field) was rocking. It’s a different game here at our field, you know,” he said. “You play at Minute Maid (Park in Houston) and they’re doing something over there that’s a little different. It shows you how many swings and misses they had tonight compared to at Minute Maid.

“That’s why you have home-field advantage and tomorrow we’ve got another home-field advantage, so we’re ready to go.”

Re sign stealing: Tony's idea to the league was to require the runner on second base turn towards CF when the sign is given to the catcher. Then turn back.

The idea was ignored

Astros on the ROAD in 2021. 1st in AL wRC+, OPS, Batting Avg, OBP, & 2nd in slugging

LINK

Houston cheated, got caught, and it’s a black mark on the players, coaches, and the organization that isn’t going away for all time. That is a fact, they made their bed, and they have to sleep in it.

However it's also a fact the Astros hit better than any other team in the league in their road games. It’s a fact that indicates they are a really good hitting team and didn’t and don’t need to cheat. A few more swings and misses in a single playoff game means nothing and does not indicate they are still cheating. They might be, I have no idea, but last night’s game in Chicago in which they scored 6 runs despite striking out 16 times is not evidence of them still cheating at home.

Excellent. All the players should be saying this. Just keep talking about the Big Truth. If they won’t take the trophy at least tarnish all the successive ones.

Ummm ... Astros on the ROAD in 2017. 1st in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, R (by more than 1 r/g over 2nd place), sOPS+. The 2017 Astros had a higher OPS on the road and scored 106 more runs.

yeahyeahyeah

so the astros were first in the league on the road in 2017 and 2021. big deal.

this means that all the opposing CF camera operators were bribed to buzz all the signals to Jose Altuve's bandaid and he sneezed the results to his teammates - 1 sneeze for FB and 2 for breaker. He wanted to do 1 cough for high and 2 for low, but thought that everyone would accuse him of having covid

we all know this to be the Big Truth

The best thing about cheating is that even if you don't cheat and steal signs or whatever magic you try...you get the other team to think you are cheating and thinking and worrying about you cheating and pretty soon you are down 5-0 and all you can think about is the other teams is cheating. Cheating.

#6, yeah, just go with it. I thought the Patriots should've given everyone in the first couple rows of the stands behind the other team's bench fake directional microphones and cameras.

Regardless of the validity, there was no way a Tony Larussa managed team was going to pass up this prime oppotunity for mind games.

Regardless of the validity, there was no way a Tony Larussa managed team was going to pass up this prime oppotunity for mind games.

Right after the A's swept the Giants in 1989, I wrote a short story called Field of Schemes** that involved the 1911 A's vs the 1989 A's in a time travel World Series, where they alternated between games played in Shibe Park under 1911 rules (minus Jim Crow) and games played in 1989 in the Coliseum, with the DH, etc., in place. The travel conditions also altered between jet planes and cross-country trains with no air conditioning. I had a lot of fun writing it, and if I weren't so lazy I think I could've had it published, although in 2021 a lot of the language wouldn't get past the PC police.

And since LaRussa was the "89ers" manager, naturally I had him trading mind games with Connie Mack, with polio scares, AIDS scares, and pornography plants going back and forth in ever-escalating fashion. During the deciding 7th game of the Series, which was played in Comiskey Park in 1933 under 1933 rules on the day after the first All-Star game, when Mack planted a "demonstration model" iron lung in the 89ers clubhouse, President Roosevelt was slightly surprised to see Storm Davis put on a rubber glove before he shook the wheelchair-bound president's hand. Mind games between evil geniuses are truly timeless.

** A title that's since been used to death by many others.

Wait--what do you have against Gerald Perry?

pornography plants
I've tried to grow these but I think I'm using the wrong seed.

LaRussa planted porno videos in the 1911 A's Oakland motel, and then sent a female reporter to interview them while they were watching them.
