1. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2023 at 07:34 PM (#6129396)If you are about to give birth to twins, do NOT give them cutesy names that inevitably will be the source of great confusion throughout their childhood.
The only thing my name and my twin's name have in common is that both are names among the 12 Disciples.
and we are fraternal twins; we look nothing alike other than being Irish (he's more in the Kennedy mold); our personalities are polar opposites; and I'm a southpaw and he's a righty.
the latter also is true for Taylor and Tyler Rogers (where were the social workers to step in and take these children away*?), but they are identical twins and "mirror opposites."
if they will be identical, follow Step 1 x 100.
lastly, if you are an MLB executive and own one of a set of identical twins, for the love of God and all that is holy, do not sign the other one for the same bullpen. there are probably 100 other similar options.
finally, I wonder if the parents got the same question that mine did before the start of high school:
- do you want both to be in every class together;
- do you want to ensure that they aren't in ANY of the same classes;
- or neither you nor your twins give a rat's ass - let it ride !
It was brought up to us, and we both instantly chose Option 3. this is a good sign, imo.
also, get off my lawn....
* - there are people who here on this site who are completely incapable of recognizing hyperbole. so sadly, I do not think that these parents should have their children taken away for this offense. Several years of probation and monthly visits to the home should suffice*.
TOO LATE!!!!!
- our twinss have Old Testament names. but of course, don't nobody call them by their birth names - they got nicknames
they are not identical but some folks can't tell one Black man from another (roll eyes...)
- ours are both leftys like me but one is pretty much ambidextrous
heh
- we did not get the question. we had to INSIST they keep them together like they want. they always hated being separated. they WANTED to share a room. they still hate being separated.
they grown ass men. their decision
And as I think I pretty well established a few weeks ago, name at least one Aaron, maybe both just to be safe.
I think if the kids were so desperate to be together all the time, that would merit strong consideration to NOT letting them be together all the time. we had a lot of sets of twins in my (Catholic) schools, but I don't recall any of the fraternal ones acting like they were identical in terms of a need to be (figuratively) joined at the hip.
and us not caring either way, that seems kind of healthy.
we had to share a room until we were age 16 and one of my sisters moved out (another brother moved out long before that, so my sisters weren't sharing a room growing up very much).
it was fine until we were, oh, age 11 or 12 or so.
after that? not so much.
- me i think that is like forcing a kid who is an introvert to spend all their time with a lot of people who are all extroverts
they got the choice. they don't HAFTA be together or work together but they WANT to. it is not like they can't handle being with anyone else
they are in mah opinyin real different people who think different about a whole LOT of things. not that they are the same man in 2 different bodies. most of the identical twins i know are the opposite and WANT to be apart so people will see them as a separate individual
I agree that both cases can be comparable.
and in both cases, I would still say that it would would "merit strong consideration to NOT letting them be together all the time."
that is not at all the same as automatically 'forcing something on a child.'
on the other hand, putting all of the decision-making power into the hands of a minor - well, that often turns out poorly in the long run.
so each case is different, and avoiding either of the extremes above strike me as the optimal approach before a decision is made.
people have to grow up eventually, and get out of their comfort zones or they'll never go anywhere. if a kid is not ready at a certain point, that seems unfortunate to me but I'd agree to postpone the process.
but unless your twins plan on sharing a home together forever with their respective future spouses, I suspect those future spouses would prefer the twins got used to a little less intensity before they decide to settle down.
TIL that one of Jesus' disciples was named "Howie". (I guess he didn't get a New Testament book named after him...)
