Why Giants, A’s fans would prefer to not have teams in same division

As an A’s or Giants fan it’s hard to wrap your mind around the idea of the two teams possibly becoming division foes after so many years in opposite leagues.

But in a potential MLB realignment proposal to bring baseball back in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic, a new division would have Oakland and San Francisco competing against each other along with the Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

The scenario took the geography of each organization’s spring training facility into account in aligning the divisions.

NBC Sports Bay Area asked fans of both teams whether they would enjoy seeing the Bay Bridge Series turn into a divisional rivalry, the result was a majority were not in favor, although the margin was slim.

Well, that makes for quite a division…..

Of all the problems with restarting baseball and getting a partial season in, having the Giants and A's in the same league is not high on the list.

Plus side: natural rivalry.

Down side: the Bay area is really only one market, and you'd risk saturation.

Counterpoint to downside: if you're playing without fans, who cares about saturating the ticket market?

The real problem with this proposed division is that the A's and Giants are the only natural rivals. Are Chicago fans going to tune in for 20 games against the A's?

Even if the Cactus & Grapefruit Leagues are a great 2020 success, it’s only going to be for a single bastardized season, and will only be done if there is no better option. Some folks will grumble about anything and everything, but most folks will accept whatever ‘least bad’ option, if any, MLB & the MLBPA can cobble together. People will tune in for whatever games are available.

Do they miss baseball?

I'd love to see MLB baseball this year.

I don't particularly care if it's the traditional National - American league arrangement or if it's this potential Grapefruit - Cactus alignment.

(Of course, assuming it's safe to do so in these COVID-19 times).

“Excluding 2020” is going to be in every column written by Jayson Stark and his descendants for the rest of sportswriting, no matter what. Anything approaching baseball this year will be a bonus.

I don’t care which team is in what division (as long as they don’t do something that purposefully rigs all the top teams into one division or all the worst teams in one division). I just want baseball back.
