Why this retired slugger might be MLB’s highest-paid player in 2020

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, former Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder is in position to hold that distinction if there are no significant changes to the shortened-season pay structure previously agreed to by the owners and players.

Here’s how, per Rosenthal’s report:

Prince Fielder, owed $24 million in the final year of his contract with the Rangers, is to receive his full termination pay under terms of the March agreement between the owners and players regarding a shortened or canceled 2020 season.

The amount Fielder receives might decrease if the parties reach a subsequent deal to reduce the pay of players who were released before the COVID-19 pandemic, but such an adjustment is unlikely, sources say. The players are no longer on 40-man rosters, and the sport’s collective-bargaining agreement seemingly protects the guarantees in their contracts.

In the March agreement referenced by Rosenthal, the players agreed to prorated salaries for the 2020 season based on the number of games played. On Monday, the owners approved a league proposal calling for an 82-game season. The players have not yet agreed to the proposal, but if they do players will receive just a little over half of their 2020 salary.

Man I thought this was going to be Bobby Bonilla which would have been excellent.

Nice comeback season for Prince. A quick check of the 2020 league leaders shows he's tied for the lead in homers.

there's always the Mets Fan Self-Immolation Thread, 2004-2020 to keep you busy.

plenty of sporadic but intense self-loathing over the years. now's as good a time as any to crack open a cold one and inhale all the frustration.

Man, Prince is only 36. Back in my day 36-year-old sluggers would inject themselves with 800 cc of cream and clear and sheep testicle extract and get back out there. Ballplayers today are all pantywaists, lollygaggers, and nincompoops.

You mean like Frank Thomas, Jim Thome, Chipper Jones, David Ortiz, Edgar Martinez and Nelson Cruz?

I am such a fan of Mets Fan self immolation that I am transitively a fan of the Mets themselves.

Given the silly way this season will go - short, some players might not play at all, 30 man rosters, etc. Maybe MLB should hire a few retired players just for the heck of it. I'd LOVE to see Barry Bonds come up to bat again as a DH for San Francisco for example. Or Roger Clemens on the mound trying to get an out. Or heck, why not the 81 year old Phil Neikro - his knuckleball might be super-slow now but I'd bet he'd still get guys to swing and miss it here and there. How could that be worse than seeing the 30th man for Tampa getting up to bat or on the mound?

I know it's beside the point, but there's no way anyone would put Phil Niekro, or anyone remotely that old, on the field. What if someone hit a line drive right back up the middle?
