Go Cards!

Can both teams lose the AL game?

If they can't, it may not be for a lack of trying.

How great is it that MLB now has these expanded playoffs so we can see teams make the playoffs that otherwise haven't done so in the past.

I gotta say, as a Red Sox fan, looking at the post above listing the SP, my guy is looking pretty average in that group.

Very off-topic but it's gotta go somewhere ....

it's your SEASON-ENDING AKIL BADDOO NEWSLETTER

Our long-term subscribers know that the Great Baddoo has had a fascinating start to his career. In April, he was the oafiest oaf who ever oafed with a line of 222/242/571 with a 29/2 K/BB ratio in 66 PA. That man was not long for the majors plus the Great one was probably a bit bored so he decided to emulate Tony Phillips in May with a line of 256/431/419 with a 17/14 K/BB and just 1 HR in 58 PA. Sensing that wasn't quite good enough, the Magical One decided to be Wade Boggs in June with a line of 348/434/455 with a 13/10 K/BB and 0 HR in 76 PA.

Now chicks still dig the long ball so back to oaf ball in July with a line of 250/287/469 with a 19/5 K/BB and 5 HR in 101 PA. Then he decided he needed a challenge -- I mean anybody can make the HoF being healthy and productive all the time but that's the lazy man's way. Pioneers like Barry Larkin and Larry Walker show that it's much more challenging to make the HoF while missing lots of time. So he missed some games in August and decided to give his chronicler, yours truly, the month off.

Bringing us to our final Aug-Sept update for the Shapeshifter. Like many deities have in the past, he decided to spend some time as a normal human, putting up a line of 241/306/352 with a 44/14 K/BB and 3 HR in 160 PA. This is simply a test of our faith.

Overall, Mr Baddoo put up a line of 259/330/436, good for a 113 OPS+, 2.1 WAR, 0.6 WAA which is pretty good for a 22-yo rule 5 guy. In the end, a 26.5% K-rate but a nice 10% BB-rate and he threw in 18-4 in SBs. He split pretty evenly between LF and CF and seems to have been about average in both spots.

So good pick-up by the Tigers, let's hope he repeats or improves next year.

Thus endeth part 1 of the Gospel of Baddoo.

I haven't paid much attention to the Yankees this year, and was surprised to see that only three positions (if one includes DH as a position) feature starters with an OPS+ of at least 100 (Rizzo, 1b, 110; Judge, RF, 149, and Stanton, DH, 136).

Of course every other position is between 90 and 99, but still, it's odd to go to the Yankees bb-ref page and see only three three-digit numbers under OPS+.
   6. bunyon Posted: October 05, 2021 at 10:28 AM (#6043666)
Over/under tonight? I'll say 4:17, but only if the home 9 don't need their bats in the 9th.
   7. salvomania Posted: October 05, 2021 at 10:33 AM (#6043667)
The Red Sox have all positions except catcher over 100, and the Rays are also 8 of 9 at 100+, although they also have a ninth player over 100 as Randy Arozarena---who started 135 games total but didn't have the majority at any one---finished with an OPS+ of 131.

Houston has 7/9 over 100 (catcher, and CF Miles Straw), and the White Sox are at 6/9, although that's not counting Eloy Jimenez, who put up exactly 100 in 231 PA.

   8. JJ1986 Posted: October 05, 2021 at 10:59 AM (#6043671)
All 3 of the Astros current CFs (McCormick, Meyers, Siri) are over 100 too.

Why do you think Yankees fans have been in a constant state of agita for most of the year? They've scored between 0 and 3 runs in 70 bleeping games.

Christ, their team OPS+ is only 100, compared to their 118 in 2019 and 2020. If you wanted the perfect symbol for the 2021 Yankees' offense, it'd be Joey Gallo.

I suppose, but this seems like a good place to pause and reverently note that Mr. Baddoo is older than Juan Soto.

I’m probably mixing him up with Frank “Wildfire” Schulte.

It is not a nice day for baseball.

Today is the coldest day (lowest high temperature) in Boston since May 30 of this year.

(Currently 61 degrees, high for the day was 62.)

Not much rain today, after a very rainy night/early morning, but thick cloud cover.

All in all, not a terrible evening for baseball, forecast to still be in the upper 50s at 11pm (or around the 4th inning).

Both teams are starting their nominal backup catcher tonight.

All in all the weather is about as good as can be. Not cold, shouldn't be raining (maybe a very slight drizzle but nothing of substance), no real wind. These two teams struggled to catch pop ups last week so that's all good.

A little respect for this season’s potential Bucky Dent! Bronxie is the Victory Turtle, acquired by Nestor Cortes for the stretch run, and an active participant in the Yankees playoff clinching celebration.
   25. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 05, 2021 at 05:28 PM (#6043775)
George Elder is now the oldest former MLBer.

Elder was only about 3 months younger than Eddie Robinson. With Robinson's passing, the only players of note in the "oldest 25" are Bobby Shantz (#8, 96), Carl Erskine (#13, 94), Charlie Maxwell (#15, 94), and Roy Face (#23, 93). The only living HoFer in the top 100 who made it into Cooperstown as a player is Willie Mays (#66, 90), although Whitey Herzog (#81) still around at 89.

I've already fulfilled my ambition of outliving the first player (Ed Kirkpatrick) younger than me to make it into the Majors, but who died 11 years ago. He made his debut with the Angels on the night I arrived to enroll in my freshman year in college. I was seriously pissed at this guy for a long, long time.
   26. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 05, 2021 at 05:36 PM (#6043780)
It's probably just that he grew up in the Bronx and looks like he weighs about 100 lbs, but Velazquez is already a big fan favorite. He got a couple of big hits when he first came up, with his family all there cheering him on, and the first impressions have kind of stuck in spite of his lowly numbers.
   27. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: October 05, 2021 at 05:48 PM (#6043781)

In his 3 games against your boys, Velazquez was 3 for 7 with 4 RBI. If the Yankees can't get it done tonight, it's not likely to be Velazquez's fault.

the comments on the statcast broadcast regarding swing path they were making don’t really match up for Judge liking the ball "up", but they did for Stanton liking the ball "down "

Cole since 6/20/21 19 GS, 110.2 IP, 4.15 ERA/3.66 FIP

$$$. He was gonna cost about $10mil in arb, he was bad last year (and inconsistent before that). They signed joc Peterson for $3-4 mil less, and they lost that gamble. Had they kept him, he also would have been traded at the deadline since he's a out to hit UFA.
   55. The Honorable Ardo Posted: October 05, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6043850)

The difference between 4-1 and 6-1 feels enormous. Three RBI now for Verdugo.

I know the Yankees have some injuries, but I can't believe Gardner got 3 ABs tonight.

But Brett is a true Yankee and they always shine in the big moments. Heck, just look at the last 10 years or so.

These plucky little Yankees put up a good fight and should be proud of their season, but everything has to break right for a team from a sports backwater like New York to compete with a juggernaut franchise like the Red Sox.

Walk Torres. So Gardner can strikeout

What a performance by Giancarlo Stanton. Can we give him a consolation prize?

Did it start at 8:08? If so, 4:17. Because the home team didn’t bat.

Go sniveling back to your hole, Yankees!!!@

3:17, bunyon

Yeah, for a Red Sox-Yankees game it had a surprisingly quick pace.

Math is stupid.

That seemed...well, almost easy. The Red Sox are not a very good team. Decent, but not very good. NY just proved to be less good.
