in play run... damnit

Edit: and for some reason my radio stream is acting weird. Doubling up the comment so you are hearing a duo of the announcer talking.

Waino throws a hanger and Turner gives it what it deserves...
   203. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:46 PM (#6044131)
his steal rate has gone down because you do not want to make the third out with the pitcher batting forcing him to leadoff the next inning.

Right but there must be plenty of situations where you don't need to keep the pitcher in there right? I mean even here he's not really dealing you can lead off the inn. with a PH
   204. bunyon Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:46 PM (#6044132)
When you have enough time to think, “that’s a hanger,” while the pitch is still on its way to the plate, that’s a bad pitch.
   205. The Duke Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6044133)
Fun game tonight. Going to be a big bullpen game. The starters are struggling.

Wainwright won’t survive this inning - just isn’t on his game tonight and scherzer has thrown too many pitches

Edit: he figured things out !
   206. The Honorable Ardo Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6044134)
A dead lollipop of a curve to Justin Turner... Will Smith got another one, but pulled it well foul.
   207. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:48 PM (#6044135)
But Turners SB ratio made me think he has really great speed but....

I think he literally was the fastest player in baseball this year based on statcasts sprint speed. So the obvious assumption about DPs.

   212. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:52 PM (#6044140)
Damn, it looked like Waino had figured it out after the homerun (pitch sequence was strike, strike, strike, strike, ball, strike, strike, strike, strike....then ball, ball, ball, weak popup. )
   213. phredbird Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6044141)

oh dear ... has that turner home run come down yet?

Big inning for scherzer. Top of lineup
   215. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:54 PM (#6044144)
I am happy that at least TBS will put up some highlights for mlb.tv during the game. I always hate the ESPN games, because they are greedy bastards and never put up highlight.
   216. The Honorable Ardo Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:54 PM (#6044145)
Ron Darling reminisces about Joe West calling his starts; Darling last pitched in the National League in 1991, thirty years ago.
   217. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:55 PM (#6044146)
Cardinals are going for a record of most men left on base according to the Cardinal announcers. (not really what he said, just counted the number left on, at least one per inning)
   218. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6044148)
Mind you, I imagine that if someone did research on it, that lob probably has a negative correlation with wins and losses (like triple plays)

Edman again.

MLB.tv doesn't seem to work in Canada or Australia for this game

Working just fine in actual Australia. Maybe MLB has identified your proxy.

Possibly, I got one of their it to try and help me, but it just didn't seem to work.

I recall reading that the team with the most LOB has a win pct of around .600

there's no reason to keep Scherzer out there.
   224. Walt Davis Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:01 PM (#6044154)
I might suggest the guy in the Dodgers pen should be showing a bit more alacrity.
   225. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6044155)
Barring a triple play or a run, the Cardinals will have a 5th consecutive inning with a runner lob.
   226. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:02 PM (#6044156)
now at 91 pitches...
   227. The Honorable Ardo Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:04 PM (#6044159)
Not to jinx Scherzer, but the Tigers won all 11 of Doyle Alexander's starts in 1987 (same as the Dodgers with Scherzer this year) only to see Alexander lose Game 1 of the ALCS.

This isn’t a bold move. Max doesn’t have it.
   231. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:08 PM (#6044165)
Not really sure Kelly is the best pitcher to go against a team like the Cardinals. At least not the style of play that they have incorporated in the past 6 or so weeks.
   232. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:10 PM (#6044166)
3 balls out of the strike zone (according to gamecast) two of which were called strikes. (first was 'corner')

Ditto. I'm surprised Scherzer lasted as long as he did. The bold move was leaving him in to face O'Neill.

Props to Nolan for not complaining about those pitches. Joe West is so bad.

Quite a duel between Kelly and Carlson, with Kelly winning. Now Shildt has to decide how long Wainwright lasts.
   238. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:16 PM (#6044175)
Saw a snippet that said Carlson is most likely going to finish second in roy. I've argued for him, but yes India deserves it, Trevor Rogers is an interesting candidate, great era and season. But unlike India and Carlson he lacks a bit on the playing time issue, but when he was in the game, he was the best rookie this year, and by bWar, he's barely behind India.

My vote would be Rogers, India, Carlson and feeling bad for leaving Sosa off the ballot.

leaving wainwright in better pay off, or schilldt is going to hear about it fer sure.
   247. The Duke Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6044184)
Wainwright has to be on short leash here but the issue with Shildt is that he has some relievers like Gallegos and Garcia and McFarland who he can trust to come in to fix a jam but a guy like Reyes really needs to start an inning clean
   248. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:35 PM (#6044185)
no PH?

2 outs, man on first, and with the way Waino has pitched the last two innings, I let him bat, it's very unlikely the team is going to score there anyway, and Reyes vs Wainwright is not a borderline call for the bottom of the 6th against the 2nd, 3rd and 4th batters of other team.

   249. phredbird Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:35 PM (#6044186)

No, it really doesn't. "when you walk Turner, it feels like a double." (Horton Cardinal announcer).... 32 steals is a good year, but it isn't an automatic double feeling type of thing.
   254. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:39 PM (#6044193)
Turner with a weak ass hit. Speed does kill.

Especially when the first baserunner was a weak contact, the concept of taking them out based upon first runner often times is based upon the quality of contact allowed.

well i didn't want him to face justin, so yeah makes sense.

Adam Wainwright or Luis Garcia, who has pitched 348.1 innings (none in the postseason) and been exactly league average? The question answers itself.
   267. JustDan Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:45 PM (#6044207)
Given that this is a WC game and you set the roster just for this game, they should have plenty of bats on the bench
   268. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:45 PM (#6044208)
According to gamecast, Garcia is aiming at the helicopters flying around the stadium.

wow, west calls a strike on a close outside pitch.

   272. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:49 PM (#6044212)
I hate it when pitchers do this... get up 0-2 and then throw three wasted pitches hoping for a chase.
   273. phredbird Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:49 PM (#6044213)

jeez, smith taking two really close pitches that west was calling a little while ago.

and now it's ball four. jeez!111!!!

It was one of those stupid moves that everyone knew was stupid, regardless of the result, and it's not like Garcia is bad or anything, but that Waino is clearly better even at 95 pitches.

That's why I favored LA going in. After Cora ran circles around Boone last night, I went with the manager less likely to screw things up.
   288. cardsfanboy Posted: October 06, 2021 at 10:55 PM (#6044228)
You wont see me disagreeing. At least in regards to the Cardinals, I'm not really sure there is a better uniform in pro sports than that.

they don't do that man on 2nd mishigosh in extra innings in the playoffs do they?

You know, that is a good point that I generally don't include in a short series analysis, but is something that is often times very clear a disadvantage for one or the other team. Since the team I have followed has gone roughly 20 years with good managers and in their post season years almost always had an upper tier manager (since at least 1980) that you kinda forget that a player manager might be at a disadvantage when it comes to tactics. (Shildt is by far the best 'player' manager the Cardinals have ever had, but the last time the Cardinals had an average or below average tactical manager, it was under Torre years.
