Two true outcomes baseball*. Live by walk/strikeout/home run....results in 1)no playoffs or 2) Zero runs scored in playoffs.

*See Twins and Reds

Worked out pretty well for the Braves and Yankees.

Watching A's/WS, thinking about how nice the playing field looks. That is not usual for this time of year, usually the football markings are still visible so you see things like "there's a popup behind second base, and he makes the catch at the 40 yard line."

Then I remembered they don't have a football team anymore, moved to Las Vegas. Took me a bit as I have watched less than 2 hours total of football through the first 3 weeks. With baseball going on and the NBA playoffs, something had to give.

Now a pitching change in a scoreless first inning.

Crochet will have a good yarn to spin if he gets the win today.

Crochet has a great arm. I don't know if he's a starter long term or they seem him as a Josh Hader type guy who pitches high leverage but multiple innings. I doubt he goes more than 1 1/3 today.

The middle of the Sox pen isn't exactly worldbeaters.

Oh, it just started raining here in the Chicago area. But it's not even as hard as the rain yesterday they played through and it's still sunnyish to the west.

Robert is going to be a very, very special player. His bat is something else, he's blazingly fast and he's already a ++ defender in CF.
   8. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 01, 2020 at 03:42 PM (#5980281)
That homer hasn't even landed yet.
   9. flournoy Posted: October 01, 2020 at 03:44 PM (#5980282)
In this year of entirely regional regular season schedules, I think it's kind of funny that the Braves' first postseason opponent was a team that's geographically closer to them than any other team, despite being in a different division.
   10. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: October 01, 2020 at 03:49 PM (#5980283)
Madrigal should have easily scored there. Did the 3b coach put up the stop sign?

EDIT: Or not. Wow.

Very sunny to the southwest too.

I was stunned when I saw it was postponed.

That wouldn't have happened if they were still in the NL West where they belong.

487 feet on Robert's homer. Good gravy, man.

Oof. and he's (Crochet) hurt. Damn. Neither guy he faced has a shot against him.

2/3 of an inning for the Crochet Rocket. Looks like an injury. I hope he's not the next in a long line of

1. Burst onto the scene with a blazing fastball
2. Strike a bunch of people out
3. Undergo Tommy John surgery
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 01, 2020 at 04:04 PM (#5980290)
Quick Crochet hook.
   17. Rally Posted: October 01, 2020 at 04:07 PM (#5980291)
White Sox coaches picked up some sign that something wasn't right and pulled him quickly. That is proactive.

For the opposite, you can wait until the pitcher has given up his 5th walk of the inning, thrown 42 pitches, and his fastball has dropped about 10 MPH. The Joe Maddon way.
   18. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 04:11 PM (#5980293)

Shower #2 blowing thru Chicagoland. Again though, I can see the sun to the west.

EDIT: This is a bit heavier than a shower; this would be a stoppage in play. I wonder if my sons' baseball games tonight will happen or not (there was a time earlier this year where the Cubs were in a delay and they played - it wasn't fun).
   20. flournoy Posted: October 01, 2020 at 04:11 PM (#5980296)
I see on the ESPN box score, that "D. Dunning" has a Game Score of 48. Isn't 50 supposed to be an average start? Any algorithm that determines giving up two hits and getting pulled in the first inning is "slightly below average" needs a re-work.
   21. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 01, 2020 at 04:12 PM (#5980297)

And I'm muted again. Jessica Mendoza is a step up from A-Rod, but I have no desire to listen to an awkward conversation with an outfielder while the game is going on. Not only does it strike me as wildly inappropriate for the situation, but I just can't imagine anything noteworthy being said.

Now Eloy is hurt. Well, he was already hurt and probably aggravated it running there.

It starts with 50 and you get positive points for good things, negative for bad things. He didn't pitch long enough to move it far away from 50.

Did you post that just before or just after Laureano shouting "he can F*CKING run!" about Eloy on mic?

Better cutoff throw gets Robert at 2nd; that's ESPN's fault.

Before, but I'm glad I didn't hear it. I'm as baffled by people's enjoyment of nonsensical, casual profanity as I am by non-Astros fans rooting for the Astros this season. I have no desire to hear players dropping f-bombs.

Indeed:

Daren Willman @darenw

Coming into today Garrett Crochet had never thrown a fastball slower than 98.1 MPH... His last 3 fastballs today were 96, 97, 96.8 MPH .

Ben Ross @BenRossTweets
Looks like Laureano will be interviewed in center field this inning, which is absolutely insane in a winner-take-all game

Susan Slusser @susanslusser
I cannot adequately describe how much I hate this. He is worrrkkkking right now, let him do his job.

Susan Slusser @susanslusser
Laureano has been involved in every play this inning. He's busy, ESPN.

Matt Foley @mistermattfoley
This is really outrageous. He's basically adjusting his earpiece while trying to throw guys out at the plate in an elimination game...
MLB has to step in to stop this.
Meanwhile, Chicago's interview is with the previous day's pitcher. I mean c'mon.

Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
Players say no often, Susan. Young and old. A young Braves player told us no today. His prerogative.

Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
As Sandy Alderson says: it’s a business of entertainment. Not life and death. The players, their union, MLB collaboratively decide where the bounds are, and why.

Completely ridiculous that this is an issue.

Making me proud! I wonder who. Max Fried is the obvious choice. Swanson and Albies are possibilities. It wouldn't be Acuna unless they have a translator standing by, which seems like a stupid idea even for these guys.

This shows one of the weaknesses of the bullpen game model. You have little margin for error when you have a guy hurt/another guy not have it.

I love Tommy La Stella (probably the only Athletic that I'll say that about), even though he plays defense like a blindfolded man wrestling a muddy pig. On that occasion, he was able to get a take down.

   46. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 05:58 PM (#5980333)
Tommy LaStella is a mystery to me. Why? Have you seen that huge scar on the back of his head? It's from hair transplant surgery, which, judging from photos from a few years ago, gave him what looks like a pretty full head of hair. And yet now he shaves his head, leaving the gruesome scar for everyone to see.

If he's OK with shaving his head, why go through the surgery in the first place? If he had a successful transplant, why now shave his head?

I don't get it.
   47. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: October 01, 2020 at 06:02 PM (#5980335)
...I didn't know that.

He didn't do that when he left the Cubs for "personal reasons" instead of going back to AAA?

   50. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: October 01, 2020 at 06:09 PM (#5980339)
Happ is a little young and I don't think he looks like he was balding before (or is now).

I think they're slowly phasing out Urlacher after his recent social meeting activity.

Well, in terms of the A's pitching staff for today's game, "it takes a village". The White Sox are a really good team, it will be great to see what they do next year. Btw, Rob Manfred, 4-hour 9-inning 6-4 games are maybe not what you want in terms of product, not to mention 5-hour 9-inning games with any score, as even the Yankee Radio Announcers were getting annoyed by the pace yesterday, Susan Waldman in particular.

All right, so the Padres and Dodgers are going to win tonight, and the Marlins (and Padres again) will win tomorrow. Four of the seven central division teams that qualified have been quickly dispatched, and the other three will soon follow. The Division Series will wind up being an actual Division Series: Braves/Marlins, Dodgers/Padres, Athletics/Astros, and Rays/Yankees. Only intra-division match-ups in this season of mostly just intra-division match-ups.

Cardinals were going to have to score one more run to win in regulation, now it would mean just tying the game........ two innings to go.... but the Padres have the "Big Mo" and we all know that is a real thin.

Did you see yadis catch of that foul tip? What’s amazing is that There is no way He catches that pitch without the tip and it goes to the backstop and runners move up. Thus I conclude he knew it would be tipped. But how? The replay is on mlb website.

Sutcliffe says that Tatis watched his dad hit a lot of home runs, most of them for the Cardinals. Junior was a year and a half old when dad last played for the Cardinals.
