Both teams in the Reds/Braves jumped over early pitches in the first. It hurt the Reds since they started with back to back singles.

Also very impressed with that Castellanos play in RF, he was bad over there again this year (after being shockingly competent IMO with the Cubs 2nd half last year).

Even with a fridge out in the garage, there's no way I'm getting in my 10,000 steps today.

Votto off to a terrible start. He probably had the worst AB in the 1st and that was a really easy grounder he just booted.

Can't login to the Gonfalon Cubs thread (shocking, I know), so I'll share my postseason thought here:

Let Hendricks go more than 4 ####### innings.

Good recovery by Bauer to strand Albies. Can't believe that wasn't ruled an error on Votto.

Neither Clevinger or Lamet are on the WC roster for the Padres. That hurts.

By the end, Joe was even pretty comfortable with him going 5. This has not been a concern with Ross at all, IMO. If anything, he needs to have a quicker hook with certain guy (i.e. Lester).

I haven't been able to watch any games this year (YouTube TV), so that's heartening. From what I see around here, the concern about Ross being too chummy with the players has dissipated, but it seems like Lester would be the most difficult hurdle there.

Potentially significant advantage for teams that can finish the ‘Wild Card Round’ in 2 games - extra rest in the part of schedule that has no off days within series. Could help in the next round.

Wish I would have known yesterday that there was an alternate commentary team on ESPN+ for Cleveland-New York. I turned the TV off and went to the radio in the top of the first when A-Rod giggled like a little girl after Judge's home run.

A-Rod on Joey Votto

"You know—he’s from Canada, BUT he thinks about investing, he thinks about charities, thinks about his family…"

What does this even mean?????

ARod has hated Canadians ever since he was rejected from the Mountie Academy.

Bauer kept his Duke hat on!! Can you believe it?? What a scamp!

From what I see around here, the concern about Ross being too chummy with the players has dissipated, but it seems like Lester would be the most difficult hurdle there.

In Lester's 2nd to last start, Ross pulled him after 5 and only 60ish pitches but it was obvious Lester was getting hit really hard. It was a between inning change, and a bunch of reporters asked about it afterwards. I think Ross let him go too long in his last start against the White Sox. And quite frankly, I'm a little surprised they were so quick to announce Lester as the game 3 starter. The Marlins are a lot better vs LHP than RHP, and Alzolay has been really good lately. That could be a real problem if they get to game 3 - all of Ross's quotes about it so far are about Lester's experience and previous postseason results blah blah blah.

Ross is pretty good pulling relievers early when they don't have it; took him a while to do that with Kimbrel but he does now so that's all that matters (and Kimbrel has gotten significantly better as the year has gone on).

Votto is surprisingly uninterested in hockey?
   19. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: September 30, 2020 at 01:35 PM (#5979787)
Helluva play by Berrios on that bunt attempt.
   20. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: September 30, 2020 at 01:44 PM (#5979789)
That out is gonna hurt Castellanos.

Great throw though.
   21. My name is Votto, and I love to get blotto Posted: September 30, 2020 at 01:45 PM (#5979790)
Not sure I would've sent him with just one out, but with Fried dealing, not the worst thing to try.
   22. JJ1986 Posted: September 30, 2020 at 01:49 PM (#5979792)
A-Rod sounds like a gentleman who has never announced a baseball game before.
   23. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: September 30, 2020 at 01:54 PM (#5979794)
Broadcasting these games remotely can't be easy. But that still doesn't explain 99.9% of the idiocy coming from A-Rod.
   24. My name is Votto, and I love to get blotto Posted: September 30, 2020 at 01:58 PM (#5979798)
ARod has hated Canadians ever since he was rejected from the Mountie Academy.

I think A-Rod's "I got it" controversy was against Toronto. The plot thickens!
   25. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: September 30, 2020 at 02:02 PM (#5979800)
So I now have all 3 games on and am also "working". Not sure I'll put the 4th one on if there's still that overlap (Braves and Reds won't score until the SPs leave the game).
   26. My name is Votto, and I love to get blotto Posted: September 30, 2020 at 02:04 PM (#5979802)
Grounder after grounder. They just mentioned it, but Fried pitched into the 7th only twice all year (maybe that's not so bad for 11 starts).
   27. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: September 30, 2020 at 02:05 PM (#5979803)
One Cubs prediction - the first time through the order will take under 30 pitches and they won't have any baserunners. Their offense was pretty bad most of the year, but especially early (so it seemed) and against guys they hadn't seen before (or so it also seemed).
   28. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 30, 2020 at 02:06 PM (#5979805)
Much like the regular season, this sure doesn't feel like a day of playoff baseball. At least there won't be any Steve Bartman incidents at Wrigley today.
   29. JJ1986 Posted: September 30, 2020 at 02:07 PM (#5979806)
Not sure on replay, but Farmer looked out watching it live.

Edit: He was safe.

Wow, wasn't expecting that! Does that qualify as a TOOTBLAN? Or did Aquino have no choice but to go, once Farmer got hungup.
   32. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: September 30, 2020 at 02:11 PM (#5979810)
Talk about SBs all you want, but Hendricks is great at picking guys off and Contreras can throw anyone out. Now, tomorrow against Darvish/Caratini, run run run.

I guess the Marlins probably get a pass on the standard "Nobody believed in us!!" crap. Even if they did squeak into a 16-team field at 2 games over .500 with a negative run differential.
   37. My name is Votto, and I love to get blotto Posted: September 30, 2020 at 02:33 PM (#5979820)

No. I assume ARod's fecal matter is more similar to a human's than to a horse's, because his food passes through a human stomach before going through the horse digestive system. So presumably that would be reflected in the output.

I'll be honest - Heyward didn't have many ABs this season that looked as bad as that one.

A-Rod reminds me of the old line about seeing a dog walking on his hind legs:

I think that kinda explains why I sort of liked him in the booth, at first.

ESPN crawl is reporting that Devin Williams won't play for the Brewers in the Wild Card round. He struck out 53% of the batters faced this year, making Hader look like a scrub.

Reds bring in a pinch hitter with runners on first and third, 2 outs. First pitch, the runner on first takes off and gets hung up, guy on third belatedly breaks for home, 4-2-6, and tagged out by the 3B.

Williams gave up 1 run all season. He has an arm problem. I see he pitched 2 innings his last 3 appearances, but less than 30ish in each. Brewers are also without Burnes. But they're a 4th place team, so #### em.

---

Second time Boogs has said he'd be shocked if Mattingly doesn't win MOY. That seems crazy to me. They're a bad team, and part of their problems were self-inflicted. He gets no extra credit for that from me.

I don't think his changeup is working for him today.

EDIT:
Jordan Bastian @MLBastian

Kyle Hendricks is through three shutout innings. Has been relying heavily on fastballs (40 of 49 pitches). No whiffs or called strikes via changeup/curve yet, as pointed out by @Russ_Dorsey1.
