The alternative BTW was on display earlier with Tom Hart (was that his name?) and Rick Sutcliffe in the STL@SD game. Absolutely unlistenable. And not just about the old cliches, it was all the new cliches as well, blah blah St Louis has the best fans in baseball, Yadi Molina is a Hall of Famer that makes plays no one else could even imagine {catches a foul pop, throws to stop runner from advancing: that's not the stuff of Cooperstown, that's rote}, you know a Hall of Famer when you see one (meanwhile he's swinging at everything, stuff that's graphically displayed as in the other batter's box, even Cards fans on this site are seeing that). And some other garbage on the Padres side, I'm not anti-Cards, blather about how Hosmer's great defense at 1B is more important than defense up the middle, very little discussion of how Clevinger and Lamet not on the roster is a serious freaking hamstring, I thought they also underplayed the Cronenworth baserunning blunder, and overplayed it as the brilliance of Molina and Goldshmidt (and Fowler) (although this was more the fault of third wheel Pedro Gomez bringing it up, desperate to contribute something/anything.) I dunno, there was probably more. But I resorted to putting it on mute. If I'm putting it on mute, what hope does MLB have of keeping my nephew tuned in?

Worst case, the cheating Astros win it all.
I just hope the Athletics win it all, and don't fall out like the Boston Bruins.

Here is the thing to me, I can find a story for every team to win it, that justifies their "undeservedness'" to the title. With the exception of the Dodgers... Every MLB fan on the planet knows that they should win it, that Kershaw should somehow get the MVP etc... You don't need to fabricate a story for their victory... Best team in baseball, best team over the past three seasons etc....

I'm not a Dodger fan (grew up hating them) but the facts are the facts and any result in which they don't win the world series is another example of an unjustified world (and yes if my team wins it... I'll still revel? in it) every other team is trying to spin their eventual championship into a story, but it's the Dodgers title by right... (yes I've been watching Game of Thrones the last few days... I'm a bit hopped up on things)
   206. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 12:27 AM (#5980104)
ARod: “Most closers don’t like coming in in the 8th inning when there’s traffic [on the bases]. Let them win it in the ninth with a clean inning.”

“Closer mentality” my ass.

And speaking of asses, Urshela starts a double play from his. Wow!

Vasgergian with an underhanded Fast Times ref, with Brad HAND now into the game for CLE.
It's OUR time.
(I don't need a video clip to tie that one up; we either got it or we didn't...nice one!)

The Dodgers game is going to end before this one.

Whoops, sorry, it's "Vasgersian"
I'm probably spelling it wrong forever

Throw strikes and catch the ball.
   212. Tin Angel Posted: October 01, 2020 at 12:45 AM (#5980110)
Bunyon, have you ever thought about coaching?
   213. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 12:45 AM (#5980111)
How many headline writers are hoping for “Indians Hand Yankees Victory in Ninth” right about now?

212: no one ever listens
   215. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 12:47 AM (#5980113)
ARod needs to work on his “excited voice.” It just sounds weird, like he’s trying to growl and talk at the same time.
   216. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 12:48 AM (#5980114)
Isn’t there a poster here who says Gardner looks like a thumb? That’s quite apt.
   217. bunyon Posted: October 01, 2020 at 12:50 AM (#5980115)
I told him to catch it.
   218. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 12:52 AM (#5980116)
Huh. I vaguely remember being told that closers succeed when given a clean inning in the ninth.
   219. Tin Angel Posted: October 01, 2020 at 01:10 AM (#5980119)
He could have been on second if he had rounded first.

For all of A-Rod's railing against 3 true outcome baseball, he was 4th on the all-time list of HR+BB+K, behind Thome, Bonds, and Reggie.

Perhaps the worst consequence of the situation baseball found itself in is that announcers are calling games remotely, instead of having to be in the stadium where the game is played. If it weren't for this, those who endured A-Rod calling the 12:00 game in Atlanta would not have to also listen to him for the evening game in Cleveland.

At times during the day Vasgersian seemed to get fed up with him, though he maintained professionalism and kept it light. For example, in the ATL game he stops A-Rod by saying "It's dead, Jim", making a Star Trek reference. I think A-Rod was droning on about bunts there.

It would be really funny if next time Matt says something like "Alex, you know you are beating a dead horse"

Cubs/Marlins postponed to tomorrow.
   225. JJ1986 Posted: October 01, 2020 at 01:08 PM (#5980219)
Why is A-Rod trying to predict pitches? It's awful.
   226. The Gary DiSarcina Fan Club (JAHV) Posted: October 01, 2020 at 01:34 PM (#5980232)
And A-Rod just threw out a random "Pete Rose" during his discussion of Albies' line drive single to center. I assume he's saying that's something Pete Rose did a lot (hit singles up the middle), but if there's a more specific analogy in play, it's lost on me.

Either way, I'm not sticking around to find out. The mute button has been pressed.

I will say that I'm happy my son is in a Spanish/English dual immersion program, because it gave me a nice reason for us to listen to the Spanish language broadcast of last night's Cleveland-NY game.

I mean, there has been good pitching in this Reds/Braves series. But I still think more of it is bad offense.

The Central Divisions have had a pretty poor showing so far, going 2-8.

Cubs/Marlins postponed to tomorrow.

Gotta be an overreaction to the mess in Cleveland last night. Right now, it's still really sunny. Radar shows a chance of rain off and on, but really it's all clear by 3pm at the latest. They'll play at 1pm tomorrow, unless it's the only game and then it'll move to 6pm. Saturday's game 3 start time isn't announced yet. I would much rather the later start, but hope it's not the only game tomorrow.

Holy cow, a run scored in the CIN-ATL game! RBI for Acuna.

Not sure what to think of ARod's Elton John story, but the organist in ATL just played an Elton John song during that Acuna AB.

For some reason my ESPN app isn't streaming the game today, so I've got the local Braves radio crew. Is the game being broadcast on ABC?
   231. Itchy Row Posted: October 01, 2020 at 01:59 PM (#5980248)
After 120 seasons as a team, the White Sox are playing their first ever winner-take-all postseason game today.
   232. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: October 01, 2020 at 02:20 PM (#5980251)
The White Sox did play that tie breaker game in 2008 to win the Wild Card (over the Twins), but yeah, that wasn't a playoff game. It's kinda crazy they never got to a game 7 (or 5) in any previous series.

I'm thinking that if the Reds never score a run, they might be in danger of elimination.

Yeah, only two games, but has a team ever been shut out for an entire series?
   235. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: October 01, 2020 at 02:46 PM (#5980257)
I don't think this ATL/CIN game will end in the next 15ish minutes before the CWS/OAK starts.

Wouldn't it be something for the Braves to sweep the Reds in 2 games while only scoring 2 runs?
   236. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 02:48 PM (#5980258)
Anyone else getting really tired of ARod and other broadcasters' fixation on "making contact, putting pressure on the defense"?

Look, I know we mostly agree that the game is too heavily TTO right now for aesthetic reasons. But that's because teams have figured out that despite more than a century of folklore, conventional wisdom and morality plays, baseball is actually optimized as a power game rather than a contact/speed/intelligence game. So stop trying to cling to the "contact is better strategy" mythology. That horse has largely left the barn (yeah). You want to advocate for rule changes that make contact a better strategy? Great. But that's different than harping on "putting the ball in play." Seriously, it's just constant.

I'm not listening to A-Rod because I value what's left of my sanity, but I have noticed a lot of broadcasters talking about making contact. It doesn't bother me at all because I do think there are plenty of times when making contact is more beneficial than swinging for the fences. In fact, I find myself, like the cranky old man of 38 years that I am, yelling at batters when they take giant hacks with two strikes and a runner on third base. So I don't mind at all that broadcasters harp on making contact. I hope they continue doing it.

Fair enough. If broadcasters are going to harp on aesthetics, I wish they would call out the dicking around instead of using euphemisms like "deliberate" or "methodical."

I think there will be more runs scored in this A's/Sox game than the entire Reds/Braves series. Really going out on a limb here...
   244. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2020 at 03:30 PM (#5980269)
Jessica Mendoza is talking about how Jake Lamb's better performance with the A's has been caused by "the mental side," in that he has a "new value system," confidence, a "change of scenery," a "clean slate and knowing he has something to prove."

You know exactly none of that, Jessica.

I agree with that completely. Victor Rojas for the Angels comes the closest I've seen. He still uses euphemistic language, but he makes it clear when he thinks a pitcher is being ridiculous.
