With World Series in full swing, PETA asks baseball world to remove ‘bullpen’ from vocabulary

The term “bullpen” has been used in baseball since the sport really took hold around the late 1800s.

In baseball, the bullpen refers to the area beyond the outfield wall where pitchers warm up. Starting pitchers can be seen warming up before games while relievers do their warmups during games as they get ready to substitute for whoever is on the mound.

Now, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is hoping those around the sport will reconsider using the word “bullpen.” In a release Thursday, PETA said the baseball world should substitute the word “bullpen,” which references the area where bulls are kept for slaughter.

Their suggestion? Arm Barn.

“Words matter, and baseball ‘bullpens’ devalue talented players and mock the misery of sensitive animals,” PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said. “PETA encourages Major League Baseball coaches, announcers, players, and fans to changeup their language and embrace the ‘arm barn’ instead.”

Come on, Jimmy. Let's take a peek at the killing floor.

Oh, don't let the name throw you, Jimmy.

It's not really a floor. It's more of a steel grating that allows material to sluice through so it can be collected and exported.

I agree. Bring back the complete game. Starting pitchers should finish their games. If we can bring that back to the game, we’ll never again have to hear about the bullpen.

It shouldn't be a surprise that this story is on Fox News. A better headline for this piece would be "PETA makes ridiculous suggestion in desperate bid for attention; only news response is mockery from people who hate PETA."

OK, sorta ridiculous. But since they are "firemen" then "firehouse" would be cool if we get a do-over...and Sparky makes an urgent call to the firehouse for Henneman!

Next they're going to ask people to stop calling themselves "stable geniuses" as that's disrespectful to horses.

The more I hear it, the more I legit like "arm barn."

I applied for a job with them as a digital media librarian this summer and it was one of the strangest, most grueling experiences I've ever had applying for a job. It was like trying to get in the CIA.

If it was 1876 they would be saying to the Lakota Nation that their leader should reconsider his name before going to Little Big Horn.

Is Grady Little the spokesman for PETA now?

"Arm barn" is able-ist. What if there's a double Jim Abbott who throws with his foot?

It makes me giggle, but it's also very disrespectful to the late Pete Gray.

Get rid of an offensive term AND introduce a giggly one.

Sounds like a great way to feed two birds with one scone.

PETA is funded by Big Meat to make veganism looks utterly ridiculous.

It looks to be a sound investment.

Why not "arm pits"?

In the days of Baseball Primer, this would have set off a 1,500-post thread.

This should have been an Onion article.

I haven't thought about PETA for years

Nor has anyone else. Which is why they made this noise.

The only saving grace is the possibility that the deliberately made what they knew was an absurdly ludicrous statement, just to see what happened.

If only they were actually that self-aware . . .

take away 'bullpen' if you like, but you'll pry 'bullshit' from my cold, dead fingers.

Pretty much everything PETA does or says makes them look silly. I can only assume that they're doing it intentionally.

I’m confused. I thought Fox was all in for PETA. They keep telling us about how Fauci and Cruella Deville hate puppies.

PETA is right on the merits, they just consistently find the stupidest way possible to argue for it.
