Nice catch by the dude in the pale blue shirt. Then he turns around and the inscription on the back of his shirt leaves Buck speechless. Play of the night so far

Is there some market research out there that shows people really like loud sounds repeated over and over again? Thinking about the “Let’s go DOD-GERS!!” thing on the organ or the Rays’ “two-strike klaxon.” I’m genuinely baffled by this.

You could ask any parent this question...and the answer is a resounding NO!

Mound visits have gotten significantly longer in this year’s playoffs. The Rays are gaming the rules by having the catcher and an infielder or two conduct a pre-meeting briefing, at which point the pitching coach then joins.

I assume Kyle Seager is really happy for Corey, but you know there’s a little part of him that’s like, “He got drafted by the Dodgers instead of the Mariners and he’s still got all his hair?? Come on.”
   143. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 21, 2020 at 11:22 PM (#5984470)
Imagine turning around to see Fairbanks staring at you with those eyes. Terrifying. He looks like Bill Hader doing a deranged character.

Double pinch runners? I guess they may also be de facto defensive subs.
   145. puck Posted: October 21, 2020 at 11:46 PM (#5984474)
Before I was numbed to such things, I'd ask, why a pitching change at this point.
   146. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 21, 2020 at 11:49 PM (#5984475)
Because handedness, of course. I think a great new rule would be that a pitcher (other than the starter after a certain point) cannot be removed in mid-inning after retiring the previous batter. Would eliminate the needless platoon chasing.
   147. puck Posted: October 21, 2020 at 11:49 PM (#5984476)
Good, hope it will be a competitive series.

Dodger batters struck out 15 times in this game. A real feast or famine game for them.

Agreed with puck - hoping, as always, for a seven-gamer.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't care in the slightest who wins the series. All I want is for Betts to be the 'regular' season and WS MVP.
   152. bunyon Posted: October 22, 2020 at 04:18 PM (#5984605)
151: I'm ambivalent about Betts' awards. As usual, I'm rooting for a 14 inning Game 7.

They are the "home" team in baseball terms, but game is in Arlington TX, due to covid19, @Globe Life Field.
And FYI the roof is closed tonight, for the first time this postseason.

Squeeze bunt. ARod might still be visibly aroused during the postgame show.
   158. Srul Itza Posted: October 23, 2020 at 09:16 PM (#5984835)
Charlie Morton has slowly and quietly become one of the most dominant postseason pitchers ever.

He starts World Series Game 3 for the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night with a chance to tie Orlando Hernandez’s record of eight consecutive winning postseason decisions, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. By beating the Los Angeles Dodgers and winning his sixth straight postseason start, he would move within one of Bob Gibson’s record.

Pretty effective jinx, that.

I heard Smoltz on Lebotard’s show on Friday saying that the 1982 Cardinals would present major problems for today’s teams. My first thought was yeah, from dodging the splinters of the Cardinals bats from the steady stream of 98 MPH fastballs.

It was in response to a question about whether Ozzie could play today. IMO, his glove would always play.

if the defensive team walks off the field before a challenge result is determined, the umps should immediately stop the process and award the call to the hitting team.

it's pretty obnoxious and 100 pct fixable, immediately.

to clarify, I'm talking about when the team remains on the field until they watch a replay - and then they trot off en masse in a juvenile attempt to "work the refs."

Think of the über-important pace-of-play, Howie. Nothing else matters.
Just don’t call time out while the umpires are chatting it up. Let the runner advance on peril. If the defensive team leaves the field and it’s called a hit, and the runner runs, it’s an inside the park home run.

Takes very few of these to stop the behavior permanently...
   187. Howie Menckel Posted: October 24, 2020 at 09:54 PM (#5984957)

It's Peter Anderson Fairbanks on the mound for the Rays.

that's what the local papers will all call him, anyway, once the authorities dig up his backyard with the aid of bloodhounds.

A Kent Hrbek memorial out at 2nd, as the fielder aids the escape from contact with the base.

What is the rule on that play - I didn’t think a defensive player could pull you off the base and tag you out
   195. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: October 24, 2020 at 10:01 PM (#5984965)

Renfroe crushed that and Joe Buck had no idea it was going out.
   197. puck Posted: October 24, 2020 at 10:03 PM (#5984967)
Renfroe caught that, but is this going to be one of those Das Boot* games for the Rays?

(*From the old Bill James stuff, you know they aren't going to make it, but you keep watching.)

I think you need a semi-plausible case that you’re trying to keep him from falling, and his momentum just pulled you both down, and off the base. Lucky ‘break’, eh?
   199. Snowboy Posted: October 24, 2020 at 10:08 PM (#5984969)
There was a reason to have Yandy Diaz leading off this series against LHP.
He came into the series with 3BB, 4K, worked the counts, and when he put the bat on the ball, he stung it. Even if his postseason BA was under .200
He's struck out twice against Urias tonight, who has 9Ks in 4.2IP
Roberts pulls Urias with bases empty, calls on Trienen.

How good does everyone think Arozarena is? Flash in the pan? Good defensive player with some pop, mccutchen?, better than Mccutchen?, a lesser version of trout, trout?
